Voc\u00eas estudaram muito portugu\u00eas essa semana ou andam <\/span>enrolando<\/b>? Did you study a lot of Portuguese this week or have you been <\/span>stalling<\/b>?<\/span><\/p>\n

Stereotypes about Brazilians often include the <\/span>jeitinho brasileiro<\/span><\/i> (our typical way of dealing with things) and our inability to be on time for appointments. Whether these generalizations are true or not, it is no coincidence that the word <\/span>enrolar <\/b>is such a frequent one in Portuguese. Have your heard of it before?<\/span><\/p>\n

The verb is to <\/span>enrolar<\/b>, the noun is <\/span>enrola\u00e7\u00e3o<\/b> and the adjective is <\/span>enrolado(a)<\/b>. <\/span>\u00a0Enrolar<\/b> can have different meanings depending on the context. Literally speaking, enrolar means to roll up, to wrap around, but there is no precise translation for its figurative meaning into English. To <\/span>procrastinate<\/span><\/i> might be a good definition (even though it is too formal, since <\/span>enrolar<\/b> is more colloquial and we do have the verb \u2018procrastinar\u2019 in Portuguese as well).<\/span><\/p>\n

It also has the idea of<\/span> postponing<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>stalling<\/span><\/i>, being reluctant to do something, delaying an action out of laziness, unwillingness or sheer lack of effort. Therefore, if someone is \u201cenrolando\u201d, that person is wasting time and beating around the bush. <\/span><\/p>\n

Another way of using enrolar is when a person is taking too long to make a decision, fooling somebody our stringing someone along. A lot of possibilities, huh? So <\/span>chega de enrola\u00e7\u00e3o <\/strong><\/span><\/i>(enough stalling) and let\u2019s look over some examples:<\/span><\/p>\n
