Hey, guys!<\/p>\n<p>It is time for our monthly reading and listening comprehension activity. Today&#8217;s selected text is entitled <em>Brasileiro n\u00e3o \u00e9 nacionalidade, \u00e9 profiss\u00e3o<\/em> (Brazilian is not a nationality, it&#8217;s a profession), by writer and comedian Greg\u00f3rio Duvivier. It discusses an interesting peculiarity of the word <em>Brasileiro<\/em> (Brazilian) in Portuguese. N\u00e3o que antes eu fizesse, por aqui, sociolingu\u00edstica s\u00e9ria. Mas fazia outras coisas de botequim: poesia de botequim, pol\u00edtica de botequim, economia de botequim. A cr\u00f4nica, afinal, n\u00e3o passa da botequiniza\u00e7\u00e3o dos assuntos.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">N\u00e3o sei se algum acad\u00eamico s\u00e9rio j\u00e1 se debru\u00e7ou sobre esse fen\u00f4meno. Quem primeiro me fez ver foi o palha\u00e7o Marcio Libar que, como todo palha\u00e7o, \u00e9 um clarividente de botequim.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cNacionalidade, no portugu\u00eas\u201d, dissertou o palha\u00e7o, \u201c\u00e9 -ano (italiano, americano, mexicano) ou -\u00eas, (ingl\u00eas, franc\u00eas, polon\u00eas). Mais raramente, termina em -ino (argentino, marroquino) ou -ense (costarriquense, israelense).\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sim, Palha\u00e7o Pasquale, mas onde o senhor quer chegar com essa gram\u00e1tica de botequim?\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cN\u00e3o tem nenhum outro povo que termine em -eiro que n\u00e3o o brasileiro. Pode procurar.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Procurei. N\u00e3o achei. \u201cQuem termina em -eiro \u00e9 banqueiro, pedreiro, marceneiro, bicheiro. Brasileiro n\u00e3o \u00e9 nacionalidade, \u00e9 profiss\u00e3o.\u201d<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Parte 2:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maldito palha\u00e7o. Nunca mais me esqueci disso. Toda vez que vejo algum brasileiro ferrando o Brasil lembro que brasileiro \u00e9 atividade, n\u00e3o \u00e9 identidade. E n\u00e3o qualquer atividade: brasileiro \u00e9 quem vive da extra\u00e7\u00e3o e da venda, pro exterior, do pau-brasil.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ou seja: brasileiro, etimologicamente, \u00e9 quem vive de vender o Brasil. Quando terminam as riquezas, o brasileiro se aposenta e volta pra \u201cciviliza\u00e7\u00e3o\u201d, como gosta de chamar os lugares que mais se beneficiaram do nosso subdesenvolvimento.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Por isso tamb\u00e9m tantos de n\u00f3s se definem como brasileiros, mas \u2014apressam-se em acrescentar\u2014 descendentes de italianos, portugueses ou alem\u00e3es. Estamos brasileiros, mas, no fundo, o que somos de verdade \u00e9 outra coisa. O brasileiro t\u00e1 de passagem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Parte 3:\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">F\u00f4ssemos brasilianos, talvez restasse mais Amaz\u00f4nia. F\u00f4ssemos brasileses, quem sabe respeit\u00e1ssemos as urnas. F\u00f4ssemos brasilinos, talvez n\u00e3o tiv\u00e9ssemos exterminado, e continu\u00e1ssemos exterminando, tantas na\u00e7\u00f5es ind\u00edgenas.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ta\u00ed uma ideia: homenagear um povo original. Nisso pod\u00edamos imitar os \u201ccivilizados\u201d. Afinal, franceses v\u00eam dos francos, ingleses v\u00eam dos anglos, e por essa l\u00f3gica ser\u00edamos tupinamb\u00e1s, tamoios ou tabajaras.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Imagina que bonito um est\u00e1dio inteiro cantando junto: \u201cEu sou tabajara\/ Com muito orgulho\/ Com muito amor\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Curiosamente, tabajara virou sin\u00f4nimo de reles, vagabundo. Vai entender.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><strong>Brazilian is not a nationality, it&#8217;s a profession<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Part 1:<\/strong> I&#8217;ll excuse myself for a little bit of bar sociolinguistics*. Not to say that I used to be a serious sociolinguist here. But I did other \u2018bar\u2019 things: bar poetry, bar politics, bar economics. Writing chronicles, after all, is no more than written bar talk.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I do not know if any serious scholar has ever considered this phenomenon. Who first made me see was the clown Marcio Libar who, like every clown, is a bar clairvoyant.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Nationality, in Portuguese,&#8221; the clown said, &#8220;end with -an (Itali<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">an<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Americ<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">an<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Mexic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">an<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) or -h, (Englis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">h<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Frenc<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">h<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Polis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">h<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">). More rarely, it ends in -ine (Argentine, Moroccan) or -ense (Costa Rican, Israeli).&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yes, Clown, but where are you going with this bar grammar?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;There is no other nationality that ends in \u201cer\u201d, only \u201cBraziler\u201d. Look it up. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I looked. I did not find it. &#8220;Names that end in -er are banker, a bricklayer, a carpenter, a bookeeper. Brazilian is not nationality, it&#8217;s a profession. &#8220;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">*derived from the expression \u201cconversa de botiquim\u201d (bar talk)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Part 2:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That damn clown. I never forgot that again. Every time I see some Brazilian screwing over Brazil I remember that Brazilian is an activity, not an identity. And not just any activity: Brazilian is the one who lives from the extraction and sale, abroad, of pau-brasil tree.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That is: Brazilian, etymologically, is the one who lives to sell Brazil. When our riches end, the Brazilian retires and returns to &#8220;civilization,&#8221; as he likes to call the places that have benefited most from our underdevelopment.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That is why so many of us define ourselves as Brazilians, but &#8211; rush to add &#8211; of Italian, Portuguese or German descent. We are Brazilian, but deep down, what we really are is something else. Our Brazilian status is fleeting.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Part 3:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If we were \u201cBrazilese\u201d, maybe there would be more of the Amazon. If we were Brazilese, maybe we respected the polls. If we were Brazilese, perhaps we would not have exterminated, and continued to exterminate, so many indigenous nations.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here&#8217;s an idea: to honor native people. In this aspect, we could imitate the &#8220;civilized&#8221;. After all, French come from the Franks, English from the Angles, and by this logic we would be tupinamb\u00e1s, thamoios or tabajaras.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Imagine how beautiful a whole stadium singing along: &#8220;I am tabajara \/ With much pride \/ With much love&#8221;.*\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Curiously, the word tabajara became synonymous with cheap, unreliable.
