With about 3 months (ahem, 87 days to be precise) till the 2010 World Cup games, and with soccer\/football tournaments going on such as the Copa<\/a><\/em> <\/a>Libertadores<\/a><\/em>, the UEFA Champions League<\/a><\/em>, and the CAF Women’s Championship all taking place and all with Portuguese speaking teams, it wouldn’t hurt to learn some soccer vocabulary, would it?<\/p>\n

soccer\/football = futebol <\/strong><\/p>\n

artilheiro = player who scores the most goals in a game or tournament <\/strong><\/p>\n

gol = goal<\/strong><\/p>\n

atacante = forward\/attack<\/strong><\/p>\n

goleiro = goalkeeper<\/strong><\/p>\n

volante = central mid-fielder<\/strong><\/p>\n

zagueiro = central defenseperson<\/strong><\/p>\n

placar = scoreboard<\/strong><\/p>\n

campo de futebol = soccer field<\/strong><\/p>\n

est\u00e1dio de futebol = soccer stadium<\/strong><\/p>\n

escanteio (br) \/ pontap\u00e9 de canto (pt) = corner kick<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even more fun to learn are common expressions in Portuguese that come from soccer. \u00a0In Brazil, some of these expressions are:<\/p>\n

bater o escanteio e\u00a0cabecear\u00a0a bola <\/strong>= to take a corner kick = to be selfish about smth. <\/em><\/p>\n

pendurar as chuteiras = <\/strong>hang one’s cleats = to give up<\/em><\/p>\n

vestir a camisa = <\/strong>to wear a jersey = to represent someone\/thing\/organization<\/em><\/p>\n

tirar o time de campo = <\/strong>to forfeit = to give up when all hope’s lost<\/em><\/p>\n

botar para escanteio = <\/strong>to kick the ball out of bounds and take it to corner kick = to ignore or stop talking to someone<\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n

In Portugual, a few expressions are:<\/p>\n

apanhar um cart\u00e3o amarelo = <\/strong>to get a yellow card in a game = to be condemned by someone <\/em><\/p>\n

meia bola e for\u00e7a! = <\/strong>ball in midfield & strength = to wing something and hope all goes well<\/em><\/p>\n

balizar qualquer coisa = <\/strong>the baliza is the physical goal\/post = to set limits on something<\/em><\/p>\n
