Ol\u00e1, gente. Hi, everyone. <\/span>As we were discussing last month, Brazi1\u2019s 38th president was selected and 55% of voters opted for the far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro. His victory speech was featured on our previous post, so now it is time for us to read what the defeated candidate from the Workers Party (PT), Fernando Haddad, had to say after his defeat. Parte 1:<\/strong> Eu, em primeiro lugar, eu gostaria, pela minha forma\u00e7\u00e3o, de agradecer meus antepassados. Eu aprendi com meus antepassados o valor da coragem para defender a justi\u00e7a a qualquer pre\u00e7o. Aprendi com a minha m\u00e3e, com o meu pai, aprendi com a mem\u00f3ria dos meus av\u00f3s, que a coragem \u00e9 uma valor muito grande quando se vive em sociedade. N\u00f3s temos uma na\u00e7\u00e3o e n\u00f3s precisamos defend\u00ea-la daqueles que de forma desrespeitosa pretendem usurpar o nosso patrim\u00f4nio, o patrim\u00f4nio do povo brasileiro, e entendemos a democracia n\u00e3o apenas no seu ponto de vista formal, embora isso seja muito importante lembrar no Brasil de hoje, s\u00e3o os direitos civis, s\u00e3o os direitos pol\u00edticos, s\u00e3o os direitos trabalhistas, s\u00e3o os direitos sociais, que est\u00e3o em jogo neste momento.<\/span><\/p>\n

Part 1:<\/strong> I, first of all, would like, thanks to my background, to thank my ancestors. I learned from my ancestors the courage to defend justice at any cost. I learned from my mother, from my father, I learned from the memory of my grandparents that courage is a great value when living in society. We have a nation and we need to defend it from those who, in a disrespectful way, intend to usurp our patrimony, the heritage of the Brazilian people, and we understand democracy not only in its formal point of view, although this is very important to remember in Brazil today , are civil rights, political rights, labor rights, social rights, which are at stake at this time.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Parte 2:<\/strong> Portanto, n\u00f3s temos uma tarefa enorme no pa\u00eds, que \u00e9, em nome da democracia, defender o pensamento, defender as liberdades desses 45 milh\u00f5es de brasileiros que nos acompanharam at\u00e9 aqui. N\u00f3s temos a responsabilidade de fazer uma oposi\u00e7\u00e3o colocando os interesses nacionais, o interesse de todo o povo brasileiro, acima de tudo. Porque n\u00f3s aqui temos um compromisso com a prosperidade desse pa\u00eds, n\u00f3s que ajudamos a construir a democracia, uma das maiores do mundo, no Brasil, temos que ter um compromisso em mant\u00ea-la e n\u00e3o aceitar provoca\u00e7\u00f5es, e n\u00e3o aceitar amea\u00e7as.<\/span><\/p>\n

Voc\u00eas ver\u00e3o que a na\u00e7\u00e3o, lembrando o nosso hino nacional, ver\u00e1s que um professor n\u00e3o foge \u00e0 luta, nem teme quem adora \u00e0 liberdade a pr\u00f3pria morte. Nosso compromisso \u00e9 um compromisso de vida com este pa\u00eds. N\u00f3s temos uma longa trajet\u00f3ria de milit\u00e2ncia, de vida p\u00fablica, n\u00f3s reconhecemos a cidadania em cada brasileiro, em cada brasileira, e n\u00f3s n\u00e3o vamos deixar esse pa\u00eds para tr\u00e1s. N\u00f3s vamos coloc\u00e1-lo acima de tudo e n\u00f3s vamos defender os nosso pontos de vista respeitando a democracia, respeitando as institui\u00e7\u00f5es, mas sem deixar de colocar o nosso ponto de vista sobre tudo que est\u00e1 em jogo no Brasil a partir de agora. E tem muita coisa em jogo, e n\u00f3s precisamos compreender o que est\u00e1 em jogo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Parte 2:<\/strong> Therefore, we have a huge task in the country, which is, in the name of democracy, to defend our thinking, to defend the freedoms of those 45 million Brazilians who have accompanied us here. We have the responsibility to make an opposition putting national interests, the interest of all Brazilian people, above all else. Because we here have a commitment to the prosperity of this country, we who help to build democracy, one of the largest in the world, in Brazil, we must have a commitment to maintain it and not accept provocations, and not accept threats.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

You will see that the nation, remembering our national anthem, will see that a teacher does not escape the fight, nor does he fear those who worship freedom for their own death. Our commitment is a life commitment to this country. We have a long history of militancy, of public life, we recognize citizenship in every Brazilian, men or woman, and we will not leave that country behind. We will put it above all else and we will defend our points of view respecting democracy, respecting the institutions, but without putting our point of view on everything that is at stake in Brazil from now on. And there’s a lot at stake, and we need to understand what’s at stake.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Parte 3:<\/strong> N\u00f3s temos que fazer uma profiss\u00e3o de f\u00e9 e que n\u00f3s vamos continuar a nossa caminhada, conversando com as pessoas, nos reconectando com as bases, nos reconectando com os pobres deste pa\u00eds para retecer um programa de na\u00e7\u00e3o que h\u00e1 de sensibilizar mentes e cora\u00e7\u00f5es deste pa\u00eds. Daqui a quatro anos n\u00f3s teremos uma nova elei\u00e7\u00e3o, n\u00f3s temos que garantir as institui\u00e7\u00f5es. N\u00f3s n\u00e3o vamos sair das nossas profiss\u00f5es, dos nossos of\u00edcios, mas n\u00e3o vamos deixar de exercer a nossa cidadania. N\u00f3s vamos estar o tempo inteiro exercendo essa cidadania, e talvez o Brasil nunca tenha precisado mais do exerc\u00edcio da cidadania do que agora.<\/span><\/p>\n

Eu coloco a minha vida \u00e0 disposi\u00e7\u00e3o desse pa\u00eds, tenho certeza que falo por milh\u00f5es de pessoas que colocam o pa\u00eds acima da pr\u00f3pria vida, acima do pr\u00f3prio bem-estar. E quero dizer para aqueles que eu, olhando nas ruas deste pa\u00eds, em todas as regi\u00f5es, eu senti uma ang\u00fastia e um medo na express\u00e3o de muitas pessoas, que \u00e0s vezes chegavam a solu\u00e7ar de tanto chorar. N\u00e3o tenham medo. N\u00f3s estaremos aqui. N\u00f3s estamos juntos. N\u00f3s estaremos de m\u00e3os dadas com voc\u00eas. N\u00f3s abra\u00e7aremos a causa de voc\u00eas. Contem conosco. Coragem, a vida \u00e9 feita de coragem. Viva o Brasil! Viva o Brasil!”<\/span><\/p>\n

Part 3:<\/strong> We have to make a profession of faith and we will continue our walk, talking to the people, reconnecting with our roots, reconnecting with the poor of this country to create a nation program that will raise awareness of the minds and hearts of this country. Four years from now we will have a new election, we have to guarantee the institutions. We will not leave our professions, our offices, but we will not stop exercising our citizenship. We are going to be exercising this citizenship all the time, and perhaps Brazil has never needed the exercise of citizenship more than now.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

I put my life at the disposal of this country, I’m sure I speak for millions of people who put the country above their own life, above their own well-being. And I want to say to those who, looking at the streets of this country, in all regions, I felt anguish and fear in the expression of many people, who sometimes sobbed so much. Do not be afraid. We’ll be here. We are together. We will be holding hands with you. We will embrace your cause. Count on us. Courage, life is made up of courage. Long live Brazil!
