The verb ‘adiantar’ in Portuguese<\/p><\/div>\n

Are you guys familiar with the verb <\/span>adiantar <\/b>in Portuguese? If not, vou adiantar para voc\u00eas (I\u2019ll let you in): it is very useful in a variety of situations. As you know, some verbs in our language (as well as in any other) may hold a couple of different meanings. Today\u2019s post will explore the ways you can use <\/span>adiantar <\/b>in a sentence and its possible equivalents in English. <\/span><\/p>\n

First of all, let\u2019s take a look at the conjugation of the verb in the present tense:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Adiantar<\/b> in the sense of doing something in advance, preparing it beforehand, making progress towards the completion of a task:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    • O casal decidiu adiantar<\/strong> a data do casamento para evitar o per\u00edodo de chuvas |\u00a0The couple decided to move up<\/strong> the wedding date to avoid the rainy season<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n
    • N\u00e3o se esque\u00e7am de adiantar<\/strong> seus rel\u00f3gios essa noite com o fim do hor\u00e1rio de ver\u00e3o |\u00a0Do not forget that clocks go forward<\/strong> tonight with the end of daylight savings time<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n

      2) <\/span>Adiantar<\/b> as in paying something or getting some money in advance<\/span><\/p>\n

        3) <\/span>Adiantar<\/b> in the sense that there is no point, there is not use or that something is to no avail or it is not working:<\/span><\/p>\n

        • N\u00e3o adianta<\/strong> ir \u00e0 academia todo dia se voc\u00ea n\u00e3o melhorar sua alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o |\u00a0It’s no use<\/strong> going to the gym every day if you do not improve your eating habits<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n
        • Meu computador estragou. Tentei desligar e ligar de novo, mas n\u00e3o adiantou<\/strong> |\u00a0My computer crashed. I tried switching it off and on again, but it did not work<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/li>\n
        • N\u00e3o vendemos para menores de dezoito anos. N\u00e3o adianta<\/strong> insistir |\u00a0We do not sell for children under the age of eighteen. It’s no use<\/strong> insisting<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n
        • Aquele rem\u00e9dio para dor de cabe\u00e7a que eu tomei n\u00e3o adiantou<\/strong> de nada |\u00a0That<\/em><\/span>\u00a0headache\u00a0medicine I took did not work<\/strong> at all<\/em><\/li>\n
        • Voc\u00ea passa a noite inteira jogando videogames, depois n\u00e3o adianta<\/strong> reclamar que est\u00e1 com sono |\u00a0You spend all night playing video games, then you can not<\/strong> complain that you’re sleepy<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n
        • De que adianta<\/strong> comprar um carro se ele n\u00e3o sabe dirigir? |\u00a0What’s the point<\/strong> of buying a car if it does not know how to drive?<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n
        • Nem adianta<\/strong> ligar para a empresa agora, eles j\u00e1 fecharam |\u00a0No use<\/strong> calling the company now, they’ve already closed<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n
