In Brazil, a lot. Tiradentes is one of our most famous historical figures, a symbol of the conspiracy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">contra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (against) the Portuguese <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">governo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (government), which became <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">conhecido <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(known) as Inconfid\u00eancia Mineira. While many countries are celebrating the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">feriado da p\u00e1scoa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Easter holiday), Brazil also celebrated the holiday of Tiradentes on April 21srt, the date of his <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">morte<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (death). With the death of his parents, Joaquim Jos\u00e9 had to perform countless works throughout his<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> vida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (life), such as that of an amateur dentist, which gave him the nickname &#8220;Tiradentes&#8221; (Teeth remover) . It was by following a military <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">carreira<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (career) that he achieved financial stability and, despite having little education, he was a convinced Republican and subscribed to ideals of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Iluminismo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Enlightenment). It is worth remembering that this is the same time that the Independence of the United States of America and the French Revolution were <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">acontecendo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (taking place), serving as inspiration for many Brazilian rebels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The increase in<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> impostos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (taxes) by the Portuguese crown was one of the main reasons for the conspiracy plan, in which Tiradentes and his comrades of revolt planned to proclaim the independence of the present state of Minas Gerais. (Tra\u00eddo) <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Betrayed <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">by one of the conspirators, only Joaquim Jos\u00e9 was condemned by the Portuguese Crown. His <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">pena<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (penalty) was exemplary, he was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">enforcado<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (hanged) on April 21, 1792 in the city of Rio Janeiro and then quartered in parts. The parts of his <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">corpo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (body) were scattered along the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">estrada<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (road) that linked to the most important city of Minas Gerais and his <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cabe\u00e7a<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (head) was displayed in a stake placed in the central <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">pra\u00e7a<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (square). The violence of the condemnation of Tiradentes was motivated to conter (curb) further revolts and conspirators to try the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Today Tiradentes is a Brazilian martyr. Symbol of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">luta<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (struggle) against oppression of the Portuguese government, he is <em>homenageado<\/em> (honored) in several cities with names of squares, statues, medals of honor and his face is even stamped on the 5 cent <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">moeda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (coin). The city where Tiradentes <em>nasceu<\/em> (was born) today bears his name and is one of the main tourist attractions in the state of Minas Gerais.
