Be it his declarations about the Nazi government being <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">de esquerda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (leftist) right during visit to the Holocaust Museum in Israel, or his attitudes seen as misogynistic, racist, or homophobic. One of his most striking and controversial positions was during a vote for the impeachment of former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, a woman who was in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">luta armada<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (armed struggle) against the military government in the 1960s and 1970s, during which time she was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">presa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (arrested) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">torturada<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (tortured) along with other <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">companheiros de luta<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (fighting comrades). While some experts call this period <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">golpe militar <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(military coup), the current president of Brazil and part of his <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">seguidores<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (followers) claim that in fact there was a Revolution. To better understand this issue, let us go over <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cinco fatos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (5 facts) about the period in which the military ruled the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">1 &#8211; During the 21 years of government, the National Congress was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fechado<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (closed) three times by the military. The allegations for such <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">medidas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (measures) were always the same, the presence of what the military called ideologies contrary to theirs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2 &#8211; Between the 60s and 70s, Brazil lived what was known as the <em>milagre econ\u00f4mico<\/em> (economic miracle), a significant <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">aumento <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(increase) in its <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">riquezas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (wealth) and investing in gigantic infrastructure that generated thousands of new <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">empregos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (jobs).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">3 &#8211; However, this economic <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">crescimento<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (growth) was not followed by a distribution of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">renda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (income) among Brazilians. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sal\u00e1rio m\u00ednimo <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(minimum wage) had an increase below the inflation <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">taxa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (rate), which drastically increased social and economic <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">desigualdade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (inequality) in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">4 &#8211; The agency responsible for elucidating the cases of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">desaparecimentos <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(missing persons), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mortes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (deaths) and tortures caused by the military government accounted for 434 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">pessoas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (people) who died or went missing due to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">persegui\u00e7\u00e3o pol\u00edtica<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (political persecution) during the period. However, it is estimated that the number is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">muito maior<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (much higher), but a lot did not go on record back then.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">5 &#8211; Similarly, numbers are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">imprecisos <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(inaccurate) when it comes to torture <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">registros<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (records). According to a reputed Brazilian institute, over 6,000 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">den\u00fancias<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (reports) of torture were filed between 1964 and 1977.
