Contrary to what had been taking place in world music, where the interpreters’ tone was that of virtuosity and vocal exaggeration, Jo\u00e3o sang his compositions as if <\/span>sussurrando<\/span><\/i> (whispering) secrets to someone next to him, accompanied only by his guitar. Whether singing about <\/span>amor<\/span><\/i> (love), about small boats that sail the<\/span> mar<\/span><\/i> (sea), about the feeling of <\/span>saudade<\/span><\/i><\/a> or about the little things of <\/span>vida cotidiana<\/span><\/i> (everyday life), Jo\u00e3o Gilberto enchants with the serenity and eloquence of his music.<\/span><\/p>\n

If for Brazilian music the influence of the singer is undeniable, the same is also true on the international scene. John Gilberto was <\/span>reconhecido<\/span><\/i> (recognized) and <\/span>elogiado<\/span><\/i> (praised) by musicians as diverse as Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, Madonna, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Ella Fitzgerald and Bob Dylan, as well as French philosophers Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. And if that is not enough, Jo\u00e3o Gilberto also <\/span>ganhou<\/span><\/i> (won) four Grammys, including the best album of the year, during the heyday of Beatlemania in 1965.<\/span><\/p>\n
