Our third <\/span>estado<\/span><\/i> (state) covered in the series of texts that pave the way to each of Brazil’s 27 federative units is history, music, <\/span>sol<\/span><\/i> (sun), <\/span>mar<\/span><\/i> (sea), joy and dance. With the design of its <\/span>fronteiras<\/span><\/i> (borders) that closely resembles Brazil\u2019s own outline, Bahia is considered the oldest state of Portuguese America, because it was in the city of Porto Seguro that European settlers first landed on the continent. This is the largest state in <\/span>nordeste<\/span><\/i> (northeastern) Brazil, bordering eight other regions and bathed by the Atlantic Ocean. Voc\u00ea sabe <\/span>o que \u00e9 que a baiana tem<\/span><\/i>? <\/span>Do you know what the Bahian has? You may remember this famous song by Carmen Miranda, the famous Brazilian star who performed with a hat covered in tropical fruits. Indeed, Bahia is full of magic and mystery. Its territory covers approximately 530,000 square kilometers, roughly the size of France, and has a population of over 15 million <\/span>de pessoas<\/span><\/i> (people). Historic Salvador is its capital and the <\/span>cidade<\/span><\/i> (city) with the largest <\/span>popula\u00e7\u00e3o negra<\/span><\/i> (black population) outside Africa. Its famous <\/span>ladeiras<\/span><\/i> (hillsides) and <\/span>pr\u00e9dios coloniais<\/span><\/i> (colonial buildings) keep the memory of <\/span>luta<\/span><\/i> (struggle) and resistance of the <\/span>povo africano<\/span><\/i> (African people).<\/span><\/p>\n

And it is because of its rich history that Bahia has become a unique state in Brazil. The melting-together between the Europeans and the various African people has created a culture of its own. It was here that the best known Afro-Brazilian religion was born, the Candombl\u00e9. Along with it, we have the traditional figure of the <\/span>baianas<\/span><\/i>, who are the followers of this religion. Always dressed in fancy lace dresses and white turban, they can be found all over town, and you will often see them <\/span>cozinhando<\/span><\/i> (cooking) delicious acaraj\u00e9s and abar\u00e1 throughout the state.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bahia\u2019s capital is the home of the largest Brazilian carnaval celebration! As if it were not enough to extend all the festivities throughout the summer, it is where you can follow the famous <\/span>trio el\u00e9tricos<\/span><\/i> (stage trucks), traditional ax\u00e9 music or just enjoy one of its numerous unforgettable <\/span>praias<\/span><\/i> (beaches). But Bahia is not just about the ocean. The state is vast and also largely consists of <\/span>sert\u00e3o<\/span><\/i> (backlands), where the <\/span>calor<\/span><\/i> (heat) is strong and the <\/span>chuva<\/span><\/i> (rain) is scarce, but there are also many mountains, parks and <\/span>cachoeiras<\/span><\/i> (waterfalls). Be sure to see the wonders of the <\/span>Chapada Diamantina<\/span><\/i>, a cluster of mountain ranges and springs that will mesmerize you!<\/span><\/p>\n

Land of great <\/span>escritores, m\u00fasicos, artistas pl\u00e1sticos e diretores<\/span><\/i> (writers, musicians, artists and filmmakers), Bahia was the home of Jorge Amado, Jo\u00e3o Gilberto, Glauber Rocha, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Narcos’ star Wagner Moura.
