Merry Christmas, everyone! <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">M\u00fasicas natalinas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Christmas songs) are pervasive around this time of the year to get everybody in the holiday spirit. In Brazil, however, the genre never really seemed to take off. But over the years, some recordings on the theme have managed to stand out and become hymns of this jolly celebration period. When the end of the year approaches, the song starts playing absolutely everywhere. The hit is a version of Claudio Rebello for John Lennon and Yoko Ono&#8217;s song \u201cHappy Xmas (War Is Over),\u201d but without addressing the political and war issue, its focus is on the melancholy of the holiday season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although arguably the greatest success of its kind, its acceptance is by no means a consensus among the Brazilian people. Maybe this is due to the fact that the first track on Simone&#8217;s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c25 de dezembro\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> album has been playing exhaustively since 1995. There is even a running joke of the population demanding her tune to be banned from playing, but truth be told, the date wouldn&#8217;t be the same without it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sdsr1aP_qQg<\/p>\n<p><b>Boas Festas<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The songs \u201cSino de Bel\u00e9m\u201d (version of \u201cJingle Bells\u201d) and \u201cNoite Feliz\u201d (version of the Austrian song \u201cStille Nacht\u201d) are widely successful around here, but we also have great original works. One of them is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Boas Festas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Happy Holidays), written by the composer Assis Valente and released in 1933. There are numerous recordings of this song, which is also quite melancholic. The lyricist reports that he long ago asked <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Papai Noel <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Santa) for happiness, but never had his desejo (wish) come true.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso - Boas Festas\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ybZ09Imy5z4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>O Velhinho<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Although it may be starting to sound like it, Christmas in Brazil is not just about sadness! Otavio Babo Filho&#8217;s \u201cO Velhinho\u201d (translated as &#8220;the old man&#8221;) has a much more optimistic perspective (although not exactly consistent with Brazil&#8217;s blatant social inequality).
