Bom dia, amigos leitores! <\/span>Good morning, dear readers! <\/span>J\u00e1 est\u00e3o recuperados do carnaval?<\/span> Have you already recovered from the carnival? Well, we are still in the party mood, so in this text from our series on the Brazilian states, it\u2019s time to talk about <\/span>Pernambuco<\/b>. Forget about Rio de Janeiro for now, as this state located in the <\/span>nordeste <\/span><\/i>(northeast) of Brazil has one of the most unique and traditional carnivals, mainly in its capital Recife and in the historic city of Olinda. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Pernambuco is slightly <\/span>maior <\/span><\/i>(larger) in extent than Portugal. You can expect a lot of <\/span>calor<\/span><\/i> (hot weather) in this state, as its climate is tropical damp in the regions closest to the <\/span>litoral<\/span><\/i> (coast) and semiarid in the continental part, with lowest temperatures of 24\u02daC in mid-July, when it is <\/span>inverno<\/span><\/i> (winter).<\/span><\/p>\n

Ber\u00e7o<\/span><\/i> (birthplace) of famous Brazilian thinkers and artists, such as educator Paulo Freire, poets Jo\u00e3o Cabral de Melo Neto, Manuel Bandeira and filmmaker Kl\u00e9ber Mendon\u00e7a Filho. In music, essential Brazilian references such as Na\u00e7\u00e3o Zumbi with its Manguebeat (musical genre that is a mixture of rock, hip-hop, funk, electronic music and maracatu – style of Afro-Brazilian origin typical of Pernambuco), and last but not least, the king of bai\u00e3o and ultimate Brazilian forr\u00f3 icon (LINK text forr\u00f3), Luiz Gonzaga.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the traditional festivals, it is hard to overlook the world\u2019s largest junina party, which takes place in the city of Caruaru. Just over 100 kilometers from the capital Recife, the city of Caruaru celebrates every year with several concerts, forr\u00f3 dancing, <\/span>pratos t\u00edpicos<\/span><\/i> (typical dishes), balloons and fogos de artif\u00edcio (fireworks). This celebration entered the Guinness book as the largest regional <\/span>ao ar livre<\/span><\/i> (outdoor) country party in the world, welcoming over 1.5 million <\/span>visitantes <\/span><\/i>(visitors)!<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the carnival period, what stands out are the Recife and Olinda festivities. As neighboring cities, they form a festive cord from which no <\/span>foli\u00e3o<\/span><\/i> (reveler) will ever want to leave. The streets brim with <\/span>blocos<\/span><\/i> (groups), music, <\/span>bebidas<\/span><\/i> (drinks) and dances. While Recife looks more like a metropolis, Olinda is a historic site founded in 1535 off the Atlantic Ocean coast, so get ready for breathtaking <\/span>vistas<\/span><\/i> (sights) and architecture, in addition to its famous <\/span>bonecos gigantes<\/span><\/i> (giant dolls) that <\/span>desfilam<\/span><\/i> (parade) during the party. And as if that were not enough, what truly draws the most attention in these festivals is the ‘frevo’.<\/span><\/p>\n

A musical rhythm and traditional dance from Pernambuco that merges different genres and has a strong influence of capoeira, the typical Afro-Brazilian martial art. With dan\u00e7arinos (dancers) wearing <\/span>trajes coloridos<\/span><\/i> (colorful costumes) and wielding <\/span>um guarda-chuva<\/span><\/i> (an umbrella) that resembles<\/span> um arco-\u00edris<\/span><\/i> (a rainbow), the frevo is declared by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The fast pace of the music and dance is so catchy that it is exactly where the name comes from: frevo derives from the word \u2018fervo\u2019 (to boil), which means agitation and excitement. And whoever has been to a Brazilian carnival knows that nothing defines it better than this, right?<\/span><\/p>\n
