Hello, dear readers, it’s quiz day! But not on any subject, we will be covering two of the most challenging verbs in Portuguese: ser and estar. Before moving to the questions, let’s review their meaning and usage first to get you ready to take the quiz!

The verbs ser and estar are actually the verb to be in Portuguese, however there is a difference between them that can be quite tricky for those who are learning the language. Check the following examples: “Olá, eu sou a Carol” (Hi, I am Carol) and “Estou me sentindo doente” (I am feeling sick). Although the meaning of the verb is different in each sentence, we can see that in English there is no differentiation, both are the verb to be. But Portuguese makes this distinction. To make it even clearer for you, let’s go to the definitions:

The verb ser refers to a more permanent, essential condition of the referred subject, for example: “Nós somos felizes” (We are happy). On the other hand, estar turns to a temporary or changeable condition of the subject in question, as we can see in the following sentence: “Nós estamos felizes” (We are happy). In the sentences above, the only change is the verb, but the meaning is quite different. In the first, the verb ser expresses that the happiness of the speakers has been established for a long time, that happiness is consolidated. In contrast, when we use the verb estar in the second sentence, the idea is that the speakers are happy at that specific moment in which they speak. Without further ado, let’s take the quiz!

1) Olá, eu _________ Nathan.

somos b) estou c) sou d) vou

2) _________ trabalhando em casa durante toda a semana.

estou b) sou c) ser d) estar

3) Olá, _________ te esperando na esquina.
