Let me ask you something: do you like <\/span>comidas saborosas, lazer, serras e praias<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>appetizing food, leisure, mountains and beaches)? So do we! And today, returning to our series about <\/span>estados brasileiros<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>Brazilian states), we will talk about this hidden gem located in the <\/span>sudeste do pa\u00eds<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>southeast of the country), which is often overlooked by the tourist glamour of other regions, yet leaves nothing to be desired. And this is <\/span>Esp\u00edrito Santo<\/b> (literally translated as Holy Ghost). <\/span><\/p>\n

Wedged between Rio de Janeiro, Bahia and Minas Gerais, Esp\u00edrito Santo is <\/span>um estado pequeno<\/span><\/i> (a small state), slightly <\/span>maior<\/span><\/i> (larger) than Switzerland, with an extensive <\/span>litoral<\/span><\/i> (coastline) that includes 73<\/span> ilhas<\/span><\/i> (islands)! Even its capital, Vit\u00f3ria, is found on one of these islands, with access to the mainland through several <\/span>pontes<\/span><\/i> (bridges). Let\u2019s learn more about this <\/span>lugar<\/span><\/i> (place)?<\/span><\/p>\n

Known for housing one of the largest <\/span>mineradoras<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>mining companies) in the world, <\/span>Esp\u00edrito Santo<\/b> goes beyond industrial <\/span>paisagens<\/span><\/i> (landscapes) and shelters paradisiacal destinations, and the <\/span>culin\u00e1ria capixaba<\/span><\/i> (capixaba cuisine) – as people born in the state are called – is hugely focused on fresh tropical products and <\/span>frutos do mar <\/span><\/i>(seafood). It’s time to work out an appetite and <\/span>ficar com \u00e1gua na boca<\/span><\/i> (make everyone’s mouth water)! If you happen to be in Esp\u00edrito Santo, be sure to try the fish or seafood<\/span> moqueca<\/span><\/i>, which is a kind of rich stew. <\/span><\/p>\n

But here\u2019s a tip: you can also find it in Bahia, but their technique and <\/span>sabor<\/span><\/i> (taste) are quite different, so we highly recommend not to join in this quarrel with Baianos and Capixabas about the origin and the right way of preparing moqueca, unless you want to spend the whole day listening to which is the best and the “right” one! Jokes aside, other capixaba delights worth trying are the<\/span> caranguejada (<\/span>crab stew), the seafood <\/span>torta<\/span><\/i> (pie), fried pero\u00e1 (a small local fish) and, for <\/span>sobremesa<\/span><\/i> (dessert), a mux\u00e1, which is a moist and slightly sweet <\/span>bolo de milho<\/span><\/i> (corn cake)!<\/span><\/p>\n

“But what to visit in Esp\u00edrito Santo?”, You may be asking yourself. Calm down, we’ll be listing some must-dos! If you want shift your attention off the coast, go to Pedra Azul, to the Matilde <\/span>cachoeiras <\/span><\/i>(waterfalls) or Pedra roxa and to Pico da Bandeira, the third largest mountain in Brazil. All these places are located within 200 km from Vit\u00f3ria. But if a spiritual retreat is what you are searching, be sure to stop by the Zen monastery Morro da Vargem, just over 50 km from the capital.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, if you are into the seaside, Trindade Island is one of the most stunning in the country, and don\u2019t forget to make your way to the wonderful <\/span>fal\u00e9sias<\/span><\/i> (cliffs) of Marata\u00edzes, the priests\u2019 beach in Guarapari, or the dunes and <\/span>mangues<\/span><\/i> (mangroves) of Ita\u00fanas, in the north. And this is just to name a few of the many amazing places you’ll find along the way!<\/span><\/p>\n
