Ol\u00e1, amigos leitores! <\/span>Hello, dear readers! Today we are moving forward with our series on <\/span>estados brasileiros<\/i><\/b> (Brazilian states). To celebrate reaching the 10th text on the theme, let’s focus on a place that permeates popular Brazilian song imaginary: the state of Goi\u00e1s. Located in the central-west region, right next to the federal district where the Brazilian capital is, Goi\u00e1s is known for its countless <\/span>sertanejo<\/b> musicians (brazilian folk \/ country music) that rose to stardom throughout its recent history. Goi\u00e1s-born country <\/span>cantores<\/span><\/i> (singers) have turned into icons for a whole generation, such as Leandro & Leonardo, Zez\u00e9 di Camargo & Luciano, Mar\u00edlia Mendon\u00e7a and Jorge & Mateus, to name just a few. So shall we explore this state even beyond its musical scene?<\/span><\/p>\n

Before diving into it, let’s cover some basic information on Goi\u00e1s first. With over 7 million residents, the state has a territorial extension comparable to that of Finland, with about 340 thousand km2. Its capital is Goi\u00e2nia and, in addition to the federal district, the state borders Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Tocantins and Bahia.<\/span> Plenty of dias quentes e ensolarados<\/span><\/i> (hot and sunny days) can be expected<\/span> o ano todo<\/span><\/i> (all year long), with temperatures reaching 34\u02daC <\/span>no ver\u00e3o<\/span><\/i> (in summer) and 16\u02daC <\/span>no inverno<\/span><\/i> (in winter). But how to enjoy this lovely <\/span>clima<\/span><\/i> (weather)?<\/span><\/p>\n

Mountain ranges and national parks are Goi\u00e1s staples. One of the most stunning parks in Brazil can be found there, the <\/span>Serra Nacional da Chapada dos Veadeiros<\/span><\/i>, listed as a <\/span>Patrim\u00f4nio Mundial<\/span><\/i> (World Heritage Site) by UNESCO. Besides breathtaking landscapes featuring mountains and several <\/span>trilhas para caminhadas<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>hiking trails), a number of <\/span>cachoeiras<\/span><\/i> (waterfalls) dot its more than 600 km2 in length. Among its many wonders, <\/span>Vale da Lua, Jardim de Maytrea, Vale do Rio Preto<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Santa Barbara Waterfall<\/span><\/i> are well worth a visit. There is no way <\/span>viajantes<\/span><\/i> (travellers) won\u2019t fall in love with this natural paradise!<\/span><\/p>\n

But if you would rather <\/span>passear <\/span><\/i>(take a stroll) through charming and peaceful historic <\/span>cidades<\/span><\/i> (cities), the former state capital also named after<\/span> Goi\u00e1s<\/b> is where you should head to. With just over 22 thousand inhabitants, the small town is also UNESCO protected as a Historical and Cultural Heritage for its unique Baroque architecture, cultural traditions and exuberant nature. The <\/span>Prociss\u00e3o do Fogar\u00e9u<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>Fogar\u00e9u Procession) is undoubtedly one of its best known attractions, where the population stages the arrest of Jesus. It takes place on Holy Thursday, so make sure to stop by around <\/span>p\u00e1scoa<\/span><\/i> (Easter).<\/span><\/p>\n

I’m sure you are wondering by now you about the state’s typical<\/span> culin\u00e1ria<\/span><\/i> (cuisine), right? <\/span>Ent\u00e3o vamos ao que interessa<\/span><\/i> (So let’s get down to business). The predominant vegetation of the region is the <\/span>cerrado (<\/span><\/i>a type of savannah), so you will come across an endless variety of<\/span> frutas e vegetais raros <\/span><\/i>(<\/span>rare fruits and vegetables) unknown even to those from other regions of Brazil. A famous <\/span>empresa de sorvetes<\/span><\/i> (ice cream brand) from Goi\u00e1s took advantage of this singularity and sells exclusive <\/span>picol\u00e9s<\/span><\/i> (popsicles) with the exotic native fruits flavor, a success across the country (avocado popsicle, anyone?). Savory Goi\u00e1s <\/span>pratos <\/span><\/i>(dishes) include <\/span>arroz<\/span><\/i> (rice) with pequi – a traditional yellow fruit, which adds a strong and special aroma to preparations – ,<\/span> galinhada<\/span><\/i> – a chicken stew with typical vegetables of the region), and <\/span>empad\u00e3o goiano <\/span><\/i>(pastry filled with local vegetables) and also the <\/span>panelinha<\/span><\/i> (a rustic risotto, with meat and vegetables and cheese au gratin). How does that sound?<\/span><\/p>\n
