Bom dia, amigos leitores! <\/span>Good morning, readers! Today we will move forward with our series on <\/span>estados brasileiros<\/i><\/strong> (Brazilian states). With <\/span>vinte e sete<\/span><\/i> (27) federative units that make up our country, we reached number 14 in our texts. To celebrate this milestone, we will talk about the <\/span>state of Para\u00edba<\/b>, which is located in the <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>nordeste<\/span><\/i> (northeast), where the exuberance of the<\/span> litoral<\/span><\/i> (coast) stands in sharp contrast with the dryness of its <\/span>interior<\/span><\/i> (countryside). So<\/span> se preparem<\/span><\/i> (get ready), because you will both find <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>belas praias<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>gorgeous beaches), but also discover the unique<\/span> beleza<\/span><\/i> (<\/span><\/i>beauty) of the Paraiba<\/span> sert\u00e3o<\/span><\/i> (backcountry). Let’s get to know a little more about Para\u00edba?<\/span><\/p>\n

The name Para\u00edba<\/strong> comes from the state\u2019s <\/span>rio principal<\/span><\/i> (main river), which, in turn, derives from the Tupi language words pa’ra (“river” or “sea”) and a’iba (“bad” or “difficult to invade”). And it is on the banks of this <\/span>“<\/span>rio dif\u00edcil de invadir<\/span><\/i>” <\/span>(river that is difficult to invade) that the state capital, Jo\u00e3o Pessoa, is located, one of the <\/span>mais antigas cidades brasileiras<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>oldest Brazilian cities), founded in 1585.<\/span><\/p>\n

Just like Olinda, in Pernambuco<\/a>, the city of Para\u00edba has a vast architectural richness which alone would be worth visiting. But before we go into tourism, let’s take a look at some important facts about the region.<\/span><\/p>\n

Though one of the <\/span>menores<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>smallest) Brazilian states, Para\u00edba, with its more than 56 thousand square kilometers is almost as big as Croatia. In addition to the Atlantic Ocean, it borders Pernambuco, Cear\u00e1<\/a> and Rio Grande do Norte. As the area is located next to the Equator, you can expect <\/span>clima muito quente<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>intensely hot weather) throughout the year, the average temperatures here are 27\u02daC. In the <\/span>sert\u00e3o<\/span><\/i>, a dry region in the countryside, <\/span>chuva<\/span><\/i> (rainfall) is rare, but on the coast it is quite abundant for<\/span> todas as esta\u00e7\u00f5es<\/span><\/i> (all seasons). This climatic division also influences the local cuisine.<\/span><\/p>\n

Para\u00edba <\/span>comida t\u00edpica<\/span><\/i> (typical food) is very similar to those of the northeastern region of Brazil in general, ranging from<\/span> frutos do mar<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>seafood) along the coast to dishes with<\/span> carne de bode<\/span><\/i> (goat meat) and beef in the backcountry.<\/span><\/p>\n

Para\u00edba is also the <\/span>ber\u00e7o <\/span><\/i>(<\/span>birthplace) of countless people who have become famous in the country. This is where the communications tycoon and the man behind Brazil’s first television channel, Assis Chateaubriand, also known as the Brazilian Citizen Kane, <\/span>nasceu<\/span><\/i> (was born). Filmmaker Walter Carvalho, director of Oscar-nominated “Central do Brasil”, and <\/span>escritores <\/span><\/i>(<\/span>writers) Ariano Suassuna and Augusto dos Anjos are other renowned \u2018Paraibanos\u2019. In music, names like Elba Ramalho, Jackson do Pandeiro, Chico C\u00e9sar and Genival Lacerda are major artists in our popular culture.<\/span><\/p>\n

And culture is one of the state\u2019s main attractions. The city of Campina Grande holds one of the biggest<\/span> S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o<\/span><\/i> parties do Brasil. <\/span>As ruas<\/span><\/i> (t<\/span>he streets) swarm with people who perform traditional dances, which partygoers can enjoy along with <\/span>muitas can\u00e7\u00f5es <\/span><\/i>(many songs) and local foods. Keep in mind that this festival always takes place <\/span>no m\u00eas de julho<\/span><\/i> (in the month of July)! And last but not least, the <\/span>a beleza natural<\/span><\/i> (natural beauty) of the state is not to be missed, and you will certainly come across one of the most beautiful coastal regions in the country. In Jo\u00e3o Pessoa, be sure to visit the beaches of Cabo Branco and Bessa, while in the city of Conde the go-to place is Coqueirinho, Tambaba and Tabatinga. There are many idyllic places in Para\u00edba, so be sure to do your research.<\/span><\/p>\n
