We cannot help but immediately think about the wonderful city of Rio de Janeiro when reading those words, but what do you know about the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">estado<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (state)? Well, if you answer was \u2018not much\u2019, stick around! Today\u2019s post will move forward with the series on Brazilian states, and the region that houses the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mais conhecida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (most well-known) capital of our country should not be missed. First of all, it is important to keep in mind that the city, which is also the capital, bears the same name as the state. Although its capital is the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">segunda maior<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">second largest) city in Brazil, the region is actually the<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">terceira menor<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">third smallest) in the country. Still, with its little more than 43,000 square kilometers, the state is the<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tamanho<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">size) of all of Denmark. Its terrain is divided into two parallel stretches, dominated by high plateau areas, dotted with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">serras <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(hills) and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> montanhas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (mountain ranges) in the countryside, and the area of lowland along the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">litoral <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(coast). Temperatures vary widely in these regions, reaching over 40\u02daC <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">no ver\u00e3o<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (in the summer) close to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">n\u00edvel do mar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sea level) and 10\u02daC in the mountainous regions. Although the capital is the most popular among tourists, the whole region is surrounded by the exuberance of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mata atl\u00e2ntica<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Atlantic forest), parks, natural reserves and an infinity of beaches, after all its <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">faixa litor\u00e2nea<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (coastal strip) is the third largest in the country. So it is well worth exploring other towns and villages in the countryside. And if you still need to be convinced, let\u2019s have a look at some recommendations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">B\u00fazios, the remote <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">vila de pescadores<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fishing village), got its fame when gorgeous French actress Brigitte Bardot <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">passou<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (spent) four months there. The small town is now one of the main tourist destinations in the state and has more than 20 beaches, one more astonishing than the other. Paraty, on the other hand, is the perfect combination of the sea and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cachoeiras<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">waterfalls). The city is quiet, pleasant, full of restaurants and bars in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">constru\u00e7\u00f5es hist\u00f3ricas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">historic buildings) and the landscape is simply jaw-dropping beautiful.
