Dias ensolarados<\/span><\/i> (sunny days), <\/span>praias<\/span><\/i> (beaches), samba, soccer, carnival and <\/span>paisagens naturais<\/span><\/i> (natural landscapes). We cannot help but immediately think about the wonderful city of Rio de Janeiro when reading those words, but what do you know about the <\/span>estado<\/span><\/i> (state)? Well, if you answer was \u2018not much\u2019, stick around! Today\u2019s post will move forward with the series on Brazilian states, and the region that houses the <\/span>mais conhecida<\/span><\/i> (most well-known) capital of our country should not be missed. First of all, it is important to keep in mind that the city, which is also the capital, bears the same name as the state. So brace yourselves, because Rio de Janeiro goes far beyond Copacabana! <\/span>Vamos conhecer um pouco mais sobre esta parte maravilhosa do Brasil?<\/span><\/p>\n

Located in the<\/span> regi\u00e3o sudeste<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>southeastern region), the state of Rio de Janeiro shares its <\/span>fronteiras<\/span><\/i> (borders) with S\u00e3o Paulo, Minas Gerais<\/a> and Esp\u00edrito Santo<\/a>. Although its capital is the <\/span>segunda maior<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>second largest) city in Brazil, the region is actually the<\/span> terceira menor<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>third smallest) in the country. Still, with its little more than 43,000 square kilometers, the state is the<\/span> tamanho<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>size) of all of Denmark. Its terrain is divided into two parallel stretches, dominated by high plateau areas, dotted with <\/span>serras <\/span><\/i>(hills) and<\/span> montanhas<\/span><\/i> (mountain ranges) in the countryside, and the area of lowland along the <\/span>litoral <\/span><\/i>(coast). Temperatures vary widely in these regions, reaching over 40\u02daC <\/span>no ver\u00e3o<\/span><\/i> (in the summer) close to <\/span>n\u00edvel do mar<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>sea level) and 10\u02daC in the mountainous regions. Make sure to take that into consideration when <\/span>fazer as malas<\/span><\/i> (packing) for your trip so you won\u2019t risk being under or overdressed depending on where you\u2019re going.<\/span><\/p>\n

For those who enjoy <\/span>paisagens deslumbrantes <\/span><\/i>(<\/span>breathtaking scenery) and being in contact with <\/span>natureza<\/span><\/i> (nature), the state of Rio de Janeiro is <\/span>o destino certo<\/span><\/i> (the right destination)! Although the capital is the most popular among tourists, the whole region is surrounded by the exuberance of the <\/span>mata atl\u00e2ntica<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>Atlantic forest), parks, natural reserves and an infinity of beaches, after all its <\/span>faixa litor\u00e2nea<\/span><\/i> (coastal strip) is the third largest in the country. So it is well worth exploring other towns and villages in the countryside. And if you still need to be convinced, let\u2019s have a look at some recommendations.<\/span><\/p>\n

B\u00fazios, the remote <\/span>vila de pescadores<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>fishing village), got its fame when gorgeous French actress Brigitte Bardot <\/span>passou<\/span><\/i> (spent) four months there. The small town is now one of the main tourist destinations in the state and has more than 20 beaches, one more astonishing than the other. Paraty, on the other hand, is the perfect combination of the sea and <\/span>cachoeiras<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>waterfalls). The city is quiet, pleasant, full of restaurants and bars in <\/span>constru\u00e7\u00f5es hist\u00f3ricas<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>historic buildings) and the landscape is simply jaw-dropping beautiful. If you prefer to stay away from the coast, but still wants to be in touch with the waterfalls and wildlife, you can take refuge in some of these lovely towns that are tucked away between the <\/span>serras fluminenses<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>fluminense<\/span><\/i> is how we call whoever is born in the state): right amidst Petr\u00f3polis and Teres\u00f3polis, is the beautiful Serra dos \u00d3rg\u00e3os, while Pico das Agulhas Negras lies between the cities of Itatiaia and Penedo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Brazilian <\/span>culin\u00e1ria<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>cuisine) is easy to find throughout the state, but some cities have had a strong migration of Ukrainians, Finns, Swiss, Poles and Germans, don’t be alarmed if you find <\/span>pratos t\u00edpicos<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>typical dishes) from these countries!
