It has happened to me many times. When I go about telling people that I&#8217;m from Brazil, quite a few of them tell me they&#8217;d love to visit its capital, Rio de Janeiro. Wait, what? Well, though Rio is undoubtely the most popular city here, its capital is actually <strong>Bras\u00edlia<\/strong>! This means i<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">t\u2019s time for another text from our series about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">os estados brasileiros (<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the Brazilian states), and today we will be going over<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">o menor deles<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (the smallest of them):<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">o Distrito Federal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the Federal District). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Located in the region known as the Planalto Central, the Federal District is an enclave right in the middle of the state of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/brazilian-states-goias\/\">Goi\u00e1s<\/a>, and it shares a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">divisa<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (border) with<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/brazilian-states-minas-gerais\/\"> Minas Gerais<\/a> . At just over 5,700 square kilometers, the DF (acronym for which it is know) is roughly the size of the American state of Delaware. It is in the Bras\u00edlia unit where the Federal Government <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sede <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(headquarters) of our country is located. When it comes down to it, this small state actually operates as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">uma grande cidade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (a large city) that has merged with smaller ones. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vamos conhecer um pouco mais sobre o <strong>Distrito Federal<\/strong>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Juscelino Kubitschek was the president who conceived the construction of a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">nova <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(new), more modern capital in Brazil, one that reflected the values of his time and his concept of progress. So, to give shape to this concept of progress envisioned by Kubitschek, two of the most renowned modern Brazilian architects were called in to<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> projetar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (design) the Federal District plan: Oscar Niemeyer and L\u00facio Costa. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Amplas e extensas avenidas <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">wide and long avenues) cut across its territory, connecting large <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">pr\u00e9dios governamentais<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">government buildings) and residential areas in the shape of<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">um avi\u00e3o<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(an airplane).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9334\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9334\" class=\" wp-image-9334\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2021\/05\/barbara-prioli-JtGI8KQNQsA-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2021\/05\/barbara-prioli-JtGI8KQNQsA-unsplash.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2021\/05\/barbara-prioli-JtGI8KQNQsA-unsplash-350x232.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9334\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bras\u00edlia&#8217;s modernist architectural style (Photo by barbara prioli on Unsplash)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That&#8217;s right, the graphic idea behind its construction is precisely that of an airplane, which why its regions are known as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Asas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (north wing, south wing) and its central part is called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Plano Piloto<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Needless to say, the<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> ponto forte<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (highlight) of tourism here is precisely the city&#8217;s sleek and unusual architecture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For the construction of the new capital, many<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">trabalhadores <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">workers) from the Brazilian northeast moved to the area, building with their own hands what we now call &#8220;satellite cities&#8221; around Brasilia. Meaning that you will likely come by a gastronomic culture not only influenced by Goi\u00e1s and Minas Gerais, but also typical and traditional<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">pratos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (dishes) from the<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">nordeste<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(northeast). Some that are worth noting are the<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> arroz com pequi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (rice with pequi), the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">buchada de bode <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(goat tripe stew) and tilapia dishes. In addition, as part of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cerrado <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(a tropical savanna), there is a multitude of fruits that can hardly\u00a0 be found anywhere else, such as: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">bacupari-do-cerrado, p\u00eara-do-campo, murici, cagaita, baru, buriti, cereja-do-cerrado, mama-cadela, araticum<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
