The long-awaited for <\/span>Olimp\u00edadas de T\u00f3quio<\/span><\/i> (Tokyo Olympics) are now in full-swing. Watching<\/span> os jogos<\/span><\/i> (the games) is a hugely entertaining experience, with both thrilling and dramatic moments that really keep us in our toes. And this major global event would not be <\/span>o mesmo<\/span><\/i> (the same) without an important presence: <\/span>os mascotes<\/i><\/b> (the mascots).<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether we<\/span> ganhamos ou perdemos <\/span><\/i>(win or lose), these cute and widely popular <\/span>personagens <\/span><\/i>(characters) play a huge role in cheering us up, in addition to <\/span>homenagear<\/span><\/i> (paying tribute to) our cultures.<\/span><\/p>\n

You probably know about the host country\u2019s Miraitowa and Someity, faced with the hard task of representing an Olympics being held during a pandemic, with fewer spectators and several restrictions. But what do you know about our querido (dear) <\/span>mascot Ginga<\/b>? Well, <\/span>here is <\/span>tudo que voc\u00ea precisa saber<\/span><\/i> (all you need to know) about him:<\/span><\/p>\n

First officially introduced for the 2016 Olympic games, Ginga is <\/span>uma on\u00e7a pintada<\/span><\/i> (a jaguar), <\/span>o maior<\/span><\/i> (the largest) feline in the American continent and third largest<\/span> no mundo<\/span><\/i> (in the world). This strong yellow wild cat covered in <\/span>pintas<\/span><\/i> (spots) lives in the <\/span>florestas tropicais<\/span><\/i> (rainforest) and stands <\/span>no topo da cadeia alimentar<\/span><\/i> (at the top of the food chain). Quite the <\/span>exemplo <\/span><\/i>(role model) for our <\/span>atletas <\/span><\/i>(athletes), huh?<\/span><\/p>\n

Ginga is also meant to raise awareness for <\/span>causas ambientais <\/span><\/i>(environmental causes). The jaguar is considered a <\/span>quase amea\u00e7ada <\/span><\/i>(near threatened) species, largely due to <\/span>ca\u00e7a predat\u00f3ria<\/span><\/i> (poaching) and destruction of their natural habitat. Having Ginga in the spotlight might help boost conservation initiatives.<\/span><\/p>\n

But what does the word ginga mean? Although of African origin, ginga<\/strong> has made its way into the Brazilian vocabulary, commonly used to refer to a smooth, quick and skillful <\/span>movimento corporal <\/span><\/i>(body movement) that could apply to dancing and, of course, sports!<\/span><\/p>\n
