O acidente de Mar\u00edlia Mendon\u00e7a | <\/b>Mar\u00edlia\u2019s Mendon\u00e7a\u2019s crash\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n

Although we covered it before in this <\/span>previous post<\/span><\/a>, we cannot help but bring up Mar\u00edlia Mendon\u00e7a\u2019s <\/span>morte tr\u00e1gica<\/span><\/i> (tragic death) again as one of this year\u2019s major misfortunes. The triple-platinum holder, who took Brazil by storm when her first s<\/span>ertanejo<\/span><\/i> album came out in 2016, <\/span>faleceu<\/span><\/i> (passed away) in early November at the <\/span>idade<\/span><\/i> (age) of 26 in <\/span>um<\/span><\/i> acidente a\u00e9reo <\/span><\/i>(a plane crash).<\/span><\/p>\n

On a national scale, social media and television were flooded with journalists, celebrities and thousands of fans <\/span>prestando homenagens<\/span><\/i> (paying respects) to the legendary <\/span>cantora<\/span><\/i> (singer).<\/span><\/p>\n

Mar\u00edlia, <\/span>a rainha da sofr\u00eancia<\/span><\/i> (the queen of suffering) leaves behind a huge <\/span>vazio<\/span><\/i> (void), but also a great<\/span> legado <\/span><\/i>(legacy).<\/span><\/p>\n

Touro Dourado | <\/b>Golden Bull<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n

After a hugely successful performance at the Olympic games, Brazil can now boast a few <\/span>medalhas de ouro <\/span><\/i>(gold medals). But, <\/span>nem tudo que reluz \u00e9 outro<\/span><\/i> (all that glitters is not gold). Or is it?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Well, the Wall street-inspired 5-meter-long <\/span>Touro Dourado<\/span><\/i> (Golden Bull) statue placed right by the <\/span>bolsa de valores<\/span><\/i> (stock exchange) in S\u00e3o Paulo sure stirred up some controversy. Though short-lived, the piece allegedly served the purpose of raising awareness to financial education and drawing new <\/span>visitantes<\/span><\/i> (visitors) to a long-neglected <\/span>parte da cidade<\/span><\/i> (part of town).<\/span><\/p>\n

It ended up being heavily <\/span>criticada<\/span><\/i> (criticized) for depicting a false sense of luxury and prosperity in times where millions of Brazilians <\/span>passam fome<\/span><\/i> (starve) as a result of the economic crisis and had to resort to eating <\/span>lagartos<\/span><\/i> (lizards) or fighting for animal carcasses in the past few months.<\/span><\/p>\n

The bull was ultimately removed shortly after, as it didn\u2019t have the necessary<\/span> licen\u00e7as <\/span><\/i>(permits) to take up public space. It was then briefly replaced by a sculpture of a <\/span>starving cow<\/span><\/i> (vaca magra) as a symbol of protest.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our previous post offered a peak into this year\u2019s political scandals. But, as you would expect, the list goes on. On that note, it is important to bring up Wilson Witzel\u2019s <\/span>afastamento do cargo<\/span><\/i> (removal from office).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The governor was <\/span>acusado de<\/span><\/i> (charged with) purchasing overpriced respirators, suspicious ties with convicted entrepreneurs, <\/span>fraude<\/span><\/i> (embezzlement), irregular activities concerning the construction of a campaign hospital, among others.<\/span><\/p>\n

Interestingly enough, the last four governors of Rio de Janeiro were all <\/span>presos<\/span><\/i> (arrested) for corruption. Nonetheless, Witzel was <\/span>o primeiro<\/span><\/i> (the first) to undergo an impeachment process.<\/span><\/p>\n

Either way, Witzel had his political rights suspended for upcoming five years, which means we can all enjoy <\/span>uma pausa<\/span><\/i> (a break) from him for a while. <\/span><\/p>\n
