Right now with the outside temperature in here, in Raleigh, NC, hitting low triple digits, I\u2019m day-dreaming mostly about <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0445\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0439-<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0445\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [very very cold] locales.<\/p>\n<p>I find it very interesting that such opposites as <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0436\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [hot weather] and <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [cold weather] have the same effect on me; both slow down my <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0432\u0438\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [movements] and <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [thoughts]. <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041a\u043e\u0433\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u043e, <\/strong><strong>\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0442\u0441\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0447\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u0441\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [when it\u2019s hot, I just want to lie down and take a nap]. I didn\u2019t feel that a combination of mind-melting subjects such as differential equations or statistics combined with the heat <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0430\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u0447\u0438\u0442\u0441\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0445\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [would turn out well].<\/p>\n<p>Of course, learning Russian is different. It\u2019s fun and enjoyable, right? This being said, let\u2019s carry on with something not too mind-boggling. This is perfect, isn\u2019t it? After all, when it\u2019s too hot to do something, we can now stay indoors, sip cold lemonade or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/juices-waters-and-bulgakov\/\">\u00ab\u043a\u0432\u0430\u0441\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> [kvass] and discuss <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0447\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [adverbs] until winter comes.<\/p>\n<p>Ok, I understand, some of us have to work and do other important things. So, let\u2019s narrow it down to a very particular class of adverbs, <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u0447\u0435\u043d\u044c-<\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u0447\u0435\u043d\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0438\u043d\u0442\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [very-very interesting ones], at least to me personally.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m talking about the ones <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0430\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u0437 <\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0435\u0444<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u00bb<\/strong> [hyphenated] because they are formed by repeating words that look the same or nearly the same twice. Let\u2019s take a closer look.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Playing Doubles<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some of these hyphenated adverbs are formed by repeating the same adverb more than once.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s summer time and <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [time for the beach]. Unless you\u2019ve been working out diligently since January (I haven\u2019t), you might be really interested in how to get in shape <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0440\u043e-<\/strong><strong>\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0440\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [very fast]. Yes, one <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0440\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [fast] would\u2019d been sufficient in April or even in May. But now you must double-time.<\/p>\n<p>It so happens that I am at the beach today (I wrote this post yesterday). It\u2019s very-very hot]<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041c\u044b <\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u0447\u0435\u043d\u044c-<\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u0447\u0435\u043d\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [We\u2019re going to get there very-very soon]<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u042f <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u043d\u044c-<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u043d\u044c \u0437\u0430\u043d\u044f\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [I\u2019m very-very busy]<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u042d\u0442\u043e <\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u0447\u0435\u043d\u044c-<\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u0447\u0435\u043d\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0438\u043d\u0442\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u043e\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0438\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [This movie is very-very interesting]<\/p>\n<p>As you can see, the possibilities are endless.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Spot the Difference<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Other hyphenated adverbs are made of two words that are almost the same (in meaning and spelling), but not quite.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a cat (I do), then you buy kitty litter in <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0431\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0443\u043f\u0430\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [big package]. But if you shop at one of the \u201cshopping clubs\u201d &#8211; Costco, Sam\u2019s Club, etc &#8211; you likely buy the same litter in <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0431\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u044f-<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0431\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0443\u043f\u0430\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [very large package].<\/p>\n<p>Are you tired of reading this longish post? Then it\u2019s time for <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0444\u0438\u0437\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0442\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0443\u0437\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [break for physical exercise]. Do some push-ups and then <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [cross] your arms on your chest and admire your biceps. If you are skipping push-ups, at least cross your arms so you have a visual example of another adverb &#8211; <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0442-<\/strong><strong>\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [crosswise]. That\u2019s how your arms are folded now. That\u2019s also how you supposed to stack Lincoln Logs and Jenga.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">It Gets Better (or Worse)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you think you got a good grip on the hyphenated adverbs formed by word repetition, relax &#8211; there\u2019s more to them. But before you start throwing the season\u2019s first rotten tomatoes at me, let\u2019s solve it <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0445\u043e-<\/strong><strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [quietly and peacefully]. Yes, that\u2019s another adverb, the one formed by repeating two words that are synonymous.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, you might be thinking that it was, borrowing from the poet,\u00a0<strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043e\u043f\u0440\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0447\u0438\u0432\u043e-<\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0435\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u043c\u043d\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [reckless and insane] to spend hot summer days and nights learning Russian.
