Reluctant To Praise Their Children<\/h2>\n
Russian parents are as proud of their children’s achievements as anyone else. However, they are less likely to praise (\u0445\u0432\u0430\u043b\u0438<\/strong>\u0442\u044c<\/span>) their children for simply participating (\u0443\u0447\u0430<\/strong>\u0441\u0442\u0438\u0435<\/span>) or making an effort (\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0440\u0430<\/strong>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/span>) and may push them to do better or keep up with the competition (other children). Moreover, it’s believed that praising a child when they are present will embarrass them or go to their head. There’s even a word for “overpraising” \u2014 \u0437\u0430\u0445\u0432\u0430\u043b\u0438<\/strong>\u0442\u044c<\/span>.<\/p>\n I’ve always found fascinating the scene in (mostly American) films where a parent knocks on their teenage child’s bedroom door (\u0441\u0442\u0443\u0447\u0438<\/strong>\u0442 \u0432 \u0434\u0432\u0435\u0440\u044c<\/span>) after an argument, the child tells them to go away \u2014 and the parent does! This is unlikely to happen in Russia.<\/p>\n First, not every child has a room all to themselves. Second, Russian bedrooms don’t usually have a lock (\u0437\u0430\u043c\u043e<\/strong>\u043a<\/span>, not to be confused with \u0437\u0430<\/strong>\u043c\u043e\u043a<\/span>, castle). Third, by and large, Russian parents feel they are responsible for their children’s well-being, so the need to check in on their child trumps any privacy concerns. Moreover, increased reporting on real or perceived threats \u2014 crime (\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0443<\/strong>\u043f\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/span>), accidents (\u043d\u0435\u0441\u0447\u0430<\/strong>\u0441\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0441\u043b\u0443\u0447\u0430\u0438<\/span>), drugs (\u043d\u0430\u0440\u043a\u043e<\/strong>\u0442\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/span>), and so on \u2014 has encouraged Russian parents to be overprotective.<\/p>\n Image from Unsplash<\/p><\/div>\n It follows from the previous point that Russian parents generally like knowing what their child is doing at any given moment. Again, there is considerable variation among families, so this is a general observation. For instance, Russian teenagers are expected to stay in touch, tell their parents where they are going, and to be home at a certain hour.<\/p>\n In addition, Russian parents will generally see to it that their child does what the parent believes is best for the child. Compared to their American and Western European counterparts, Russian parents are less likely to let their children make mistakes (\u0434\u0435<\/strong>\u043b\u0430\u0442\u044c \u043e\u0448\u0438<\/strong>\u0431\u043a\u0438<\/span>) and learn from them. As mentioned above, parents consider it their responsibility to make sure their child is out of harm’s way at all times. This may mean making the child dress warmly (\u0442\u0435\u043f\u043b\u043e<\/strong> \u043e\u0434\u0435\u0432\u0430<\/strong>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/span>), not letting the child socialize with certain people, and even not letting them pursue a certain major in university.<\/p>\n Perhaps these observations make Russian parents look overbearing by external standards, but the flip side is that they are definitely caring and will help you in times of need. Each approach has its advantages and disadvantages, but it may be helpful to know what to expect from Russian parents.
