You might have come across several similar words in English: cossack<\/em>, kazakh<\/em>, perhaps even\u00a0kozak\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0kazak.\u00a0<\/em>You probably know they refer to groups of people, but which groups? Are they interchangeable?<\/p>\n

This post will explain the corresponding words and their definitions in Russian so next time you come across any of them, it will be a little clearer.<\/p>\n

The word \u043a\u0430\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u043a<\/strong> (Cossack<\/a>, fem. \u043a\u0430\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u043a\u0430<\/strong>, plural \u043a\u0430\u0437\u0430\u043a\u0438 <\/span><\/strong>or\u00a0\u043a\u0430\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u043a\u0438<\/strong>) refers to a member of self-governing military societies in what is now the south of Russia and Ukraine. Note that their name in Ukrainian is\u00a0\u043a\u043e\u0437\u0430\u043a\u0438\u0301<\/em>, which is why you might have seen the spelling\u00a0kozak\u00a0<\/em>in English or the last name Kozakov.<\/p>\n

The best-known Cossack societies are Zaporizhia Cossacks<\/a> (\u0437\u0430\u043f\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 \u043a\u0430\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u043a\u0438<\/strong>) and Don Cossacks<\/a> (\u0434\u043e\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u0435 \u043a\u0430\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u043a\u0438<\/strong>), named after the geographical areas they lived in. It seems that Cossacks came from various ethnic backgrounds<\/a>, such as Belorussians, Russians, Ukrainians, Turks, and Tatars. Modern-day Cossacks may speak Russian or Ukrainian, depending on where they live.<\/p>\n

\u041a\u0430\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u0445<\/strong> (Kazakh, fem. \u043a\u0430\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u0430<\/strong>, plural \u043a\u0430\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u0445\u0438<\/strong>) is the name of an ethnic group<\/a> living in the Urals and Central Asia. You may recognize this name from the country Kazakhstan (\u041a\u0430\u0437\u0430\u0445\u0441\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u043d<\/strong>). Note that \u043a\u0430\u0437\u0430\u0445 is the Russian name for this group; the corresponding word in the Kazakh language is\u00a0q\u0251z\u0251\u0301q<\/em>. Kazakhs are thought to be of Turkic and Mongol origins<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Apart from the nation of Kazakhstan, Kazakhs also live in Russia (\u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u044f<\/strong>), China (\u041a\u0438\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0439<\/strong>), and Mongolia (\u041c\u043e\u043d\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u044f<\/strong>).
