You can read the English translation <a href=\"https:\/\/xixvek.wordpress.com\/2012\/03\/09\/let-me-not-lose-my-senses-god\/\">here<\/a>. <strong>\u0421\u043e\u0439\u0442<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u0438<\/span> \u0441 \u0443\u043c<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u0430<\/span><\/strong> means &#8220;to lose one&#8217;s mind;&#8221; literally, &#8220;to walk off one&#8217;s wits.&#8221; You may recognize <strong>\u0443\u043c<\/strong> \u2014 wit, intelligence \u2014 and <strong><span style=\"color: #008000\">\u0443<\/span>\u043c\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong>, smart.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0421\u0443\u043c\u0430\u0441\u0448<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u0448\u0438\u0439<\/strong> means crazy. This word has a rather strong negative connotation, and you may not want to use it for a person with a mental health disorder. Another related word is <strong>\u0431\u0435\u0437<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u0443<\/span>\u043c\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong>, insane.<\/p>\n<p>Other rather derogatory ways of saying &#8220;crazy&#8221; are <strong>\u043d\u0435\u043d\u043e\u0440\u043c<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> or <strong>\u0431\u043e\u043b\u044c\u043d<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u043d\u0430 \u0433<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0443<\/strong>. By that I mean, for instance, in English the expression &#8220;mental disorder&#8221; may refer to such common conditions as anxiety (<strong>\u0442\u0440\u0435\u0432<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u0430<\/strong>) or depression (<strong>\u0434\u0435\u043f\u0440<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u0438\u044f<\/strong>).\u00a0The usual Russian counterpart, <strong>\u043f\u0441\u0438\u0445<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0435 \u0437\u0430\u0431\u043e\u043b\u0435\u0432<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong> or <strong>\u043f\u0441\u0438\u0445<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0435 \u0440\u0430\u0441\u0441\u0442\u0440<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/strong>, evokes conditions that are more stigmatized as &#8220;abnormal&#8221; in Russian society, like bipolar disorder (<strong>\u0431\u0438\u043f\u043e\u043b<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u044f<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u043e\u0435 \u0440\u0430\u0441\u0441\u0442\u0440<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/strong>) or schizophrenia (<strong>\u0448\u0438\u0437\u043e\u0444\u0440\u0435\u043d<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u0438<\/span>\u044f<\/strong>). This is doubly true for anything with <strong>\u043f\u0441\u0438\u0445\u0438<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0440\/\u043f\u0441\u0438\u0445\u0438\u0430\u0442\u0440<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439<\/strong> (psychiatrist\/psychiatric).<\/p>\n<p>The flip side of this is that more &#8220;common&#8221; conditions like depression, which the speaker may have, are often not seen as a real condition by laypeople. I would often hear people in Russia make fun of Americans who see a counselor (<strong>\u043f\u0441\u0438\u0445<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0433<\/strong>, often erroneously called <strong>\u043f\u0441\u0438\u0445\u043e\u0430\u043d\u0430\u043b<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u043a<\/strong>), saying that Americans don&#8217;t have real friends\u00a0 who they could talk to about their problems so they have to pay to see someone.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, it is scary for a Russian person to admit that they or their loved one may have a mental disorder due to the stigma attached to them. After all, <strong>\u043f\u0441\u0438\u0445<\/strong> is the equivalent of &#8220;psycho,&#8221; so it may be odd to be talking about <strong>\u043f\u0441\u0438\u0445<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0435 \u0437\u0434\u043e\u0440<span style=\"color: #008000\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044c\u0435<\/strong> (mental health).
