Let us look at several common \u201ctaboo\u201d subjects and see how they are treated by Russian speakers. For example, while asking a person what they make (\u00ab<strong>\u0421\u043a<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043a\u043e \u0412\u044b \u0437\u0430\u0440\u0430\u0431<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044b\u0432\u0430\u0435\u0442\u0435?<\/strong>\u00bb) head-on is considered rude (<strong>\u043d\u0435\u0432<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u0435<\/span>\u0436\u043b\u0438\u0432\u043e<\/strong>), people will often ask their friends about third parties\u2019 income. For example, a parent may ask their child what the child\u2019s friend makes. It is also common for people to know exactly how much their spouse (fem. <strong>\u0441\u0443\u043f\u0440<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u0443<\/span>\u0433\u0430<\/strong>, masc. <strong>\u0441\u0443\u043f\u0440<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u0443<\/span>\u0433<\/strong>) makes each month and where that money is going.<\/p>\n<h2>Family<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_10385\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10385\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10385\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/11\/family-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"mother with baby\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/11\/family-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/11\/family-350x233.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/11\/family-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/11\/family.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10385\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via Pixabay<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Another question that Russians will bring up fairly quickly in a conversation is whether a person or a couple (<strong>\u043f<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0430<\/strong>) married or has any children (<strong>\u0434<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0438<\/strong>):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u0412\u044b \u0436\u0435\u043d<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044b? (Are you married? \u2013 said to a couple or a man)*<\/li>\n<li>\u0412\u044b \u0437<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0443\u0436\u0435\u043c? (Are you married? \u2013 said to a woman)*<\/li>\n<li>\u0423 \u0432\u0430\u0441 \u0435\u0441\u0442\u044c \u0434<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0438? (Do you have children?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<span class=\"shortcode-typography\" style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; color: #000000;\">* Note: While these forms are best suited for heterosexual marriages (\u0436\u0435\u043d\u0430\u0442 literally means &#8220;wifed,&#8221; and \u0437\u0430\u043c\u0443\u0436\u0435\u043c means &#8220;behind a husband&#8221;), these are the Russian questions you would likely hear based on your perceived gender. One gender-neutral way of talking about being married is &#8220;\u042f \u0441\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u044e<\/span> \u0432 \u0431\u0440<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u0430<\/span>\u043a\u0435&#8221; (literally, &#8220;I&#8217;m in a marriage&#8221;), although there is no agreement as to the best way of <a title=\"Link in Russian\" href=\"https:\/\/forum.wordreference.com\/threads\/%D0%96%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%B8%D1%82%D1%8C%D1%81%D1%8F-%D0%B2%D1%8B%CC%81%D0%B9%D1%82%D0%B8-%D0%B7%D0%B0%D0%BC%D1%83%D0%B6-%D0%B3%D0%BE%D0%BC%D0%BE%D1%81%D0%B5%D0%BA%D1%81%D1%83%D0%B0%D0%BB%D1%8C%D0%BD%D1%8B%D0%B9-%D0%B1%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%BA.2500630\/\">talking about same-sex marriages<\/a>.<\/span>\n<p>If you answer \u201cno,\u201d you may be asked why or when you are planning to get married or have children.<\/p>\n<h2>Ethnic Origin<\/h2>\n<p>As I wrote before, one\u2019s ethnic origin (<strong>\u043d\u0430\u0446\u0438\u043e\u043d<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/strong>, not to be confused with nationality in the sense of citizenship, <strong>\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0436\u0434<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/strong>) <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/some-awkward-points-on-ethnicity-in-russia\/\">can be a sensitive subject in Russia<\/a>. While Russians are likely to criticize specific politicians (<strong>\u043f\u043e\u043b<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong>) or corruption (<strong>\u043a\u043e\u0440\u0440<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u0443<\/span>\u043f\u0446\u0438\u044f<\/strong>) in their country, they may get defensive if an outsider does the same. In short, it may be best to steer clear of politics unless you are close to and comfortable with your Russian counterparts.<\/p>\n<h2>Age<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s fairly common to avoid talking about a woman\u2019s age (<strong>\u0432<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u043e<\/span>\u0437\u0440\u0430\u0441\u0442<\/strong>) in Russia. This applies to women as young as their 20s.
