According to <a href=\"https:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%AF%D0%B7%D1%8B%D0%BA%D0%B8_%D0%A0%D0%BE%D1%81%D1%81%D0%B8%D0%B8_%D0%B2_%D0%BF%D0%BE%D1%80%D1%8F%D0%B4%D0%BA%D0%B5_%D1%87%D0%B8%D1%81%D0%BB%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%BD%D0%BE%D1%81%D1%82%D0%B8_%D0%B2%D0%BB%D0%B0%D0%B4%D0%B5%D1%8E%D1%89%D0%B8%D1%85\">Wikipedia<\/a>, there are more than 150 languages speaking in Russia, with varying numbers of speakers. It is impossible to cover all languages of Russia in one post, so let us look at five common ones and their current status. This post is not meant to endorse any policies by the Russian government towards ethnic or linguistic minorities.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Along with Russian, Tatar is an official language in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatarstan\">Republic of Tatarstan<\/a> (<strong>\u0420\u0435\u0441\u043f<span style=\"color: #808000\">\u0443<\/span>\u0431\u043b\u0438\u043a\u0430 \u0422\u0430\u0442\u0430\u0440\u0441\u0442<span style=\"color: #808000\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d<\/strong>, an entity within Russia). As of 2010, there were around 4.28 million speakers of Tatar living in Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Tatar has been in the news recently because this language, which used to be a compulsory subject in schools in Tatarstan, was demoted to the status of an elective. This was spurred by alleged complaints from parents of Russian children who did not speak Tatar natively. Chechen<\/h2>\n<p>Chechen (<strong>\u0447\u0435\u0447<span style=\"color: #808000\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u044f\u0437\u044b\u043a<\/strong>;\u00a0<em>\u041d\u043e\u0445\u0447\u0438\u0439\u043d \u041c\u043e\u0442\u0442 \/ Nox\u00e7iyn Mott \/ \u0646\u064e\u0627\u062e\u0686\u06cc\u06cc\u0646 \u0645\u0648\u0653\u062a\u062a \/ \u10dc\u10d0\u10ee\u10e9\u10d8\u10d4 \u10db\u10e3\u10dd\u10d7\u10d7<\/em>) is a language spoken by around 1.35 million people in Russia. Most speakers live in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chechnya\">Chechen Republic<\/a>, a territory <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caucasian_War\">annexed to Russia<\/a> in the 19th century. Bashkir is an official language in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bashkortostan\">Republic of Bashkortostan<\/a>.\u00a0 It is also spoken in other regions of Russia, such as Tatarstan and Chelyabinsk, Orenburg, Tyumen, Sverdlovsk and Kurgan Oblasts (regions). Ukrainian<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ukrainian_language\">Ukrainian<\/a> (<strong>\u0443\u043a\u0440\u0430<span style=\"color: #808000\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u044f\u0437<span style=\"color: #808000\">\u044b<\/span>\u043a<\/strong>; <i>\u0443\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0457\u043d\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u043c\u043e\u0432\u0430)\u00a0<\/i>is an East Slavic language related to Russian and Belorussian. All three developed on the basis of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Old_East_Slavic\">Old East Slavic<\/a> language. Ukrainian is, of course, the state language of Ukraine. Chuvash<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chuvash_language\">Chuvash<\/a>\u00a0(<strong>\u0447\u0443\u0432<span style=\"color: #808000\">\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u044f\u0437<span style=\"color: #808000\">\u044b<\/span>\u043a<\/strong>; <i>\u0427\u04d1\u0432\u0430\u0448 \u0447\u04d7\u043b\u0445\u0438, \u0427\u04d1\u0432\u0430\u0448\u043b\u0430<\/i>)\u00a0is spoken by 1.04 million people, mainly in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chuvashia\">Chuvashia<\/a>. Although it is a Turkic language, it is not mutually intelligible with other languages in that family.
