If yes then you can probably relate especially well to the opening of the Chapter 7 of M&amp;M, <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041d\u0435\u0445\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0448\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0432\u0430\u0440\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [The Evil Apartment]. After all, poor <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0421\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u043f\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u041b\u0438\u0445\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> [Styopa Likhodeyev] suffered through a horrible <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u0445\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [hangover] all through this short chapter.<\/p>\n<p>Another Russian word for hangover is <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0431\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> as in <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0421\u0442\u0451\u043f\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0431\u044b\u043b <\/strong><strong>\u0441 <\/strong><strong>\u0442\u0430\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0431\u043e\u0434\u0443\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>, <\/strong><strong>\u0447\u0442\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0441 <\/strong><strong>\u0442\u0440\u0443\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043c <\/strong><strong>\u0443\u0437\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0435\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0432 <\/strong><strong>\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0430\u043b\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [Styopa was suffering from such a horrid hangover that he had a hard time recognizing himself in the mirror].<\/p>\n<p>By the way, the last name <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041b\u0438\u0445\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> is made up of two words &#8211; <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0445\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [trouble, mischief] and <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to do]. Thus the name describes and labels its owner as a scoundrel even before we get to learn any specifics about him. Ok, so Styopa isn\u2019t evil or malicious. After all, his list of <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [smut, piggery] includes just the ordinary stuff &#8211; <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u044c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [drunkenness], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0438\u0447\u0435\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u043d\u044c\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [not doing anything], and <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435\u0443\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u044b\u043f\u043e\u043b\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0432\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044e<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0430\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [inability to do one\u2019s work]. <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0411<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0448\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0442\u043e\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [moreover], he sounds like someone who <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0437\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442, <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0430\u043a <\/strong><strong>\u0443\u0441\u0442\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0438\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [knows how to get comfortable in life]. As for <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0442\u0438\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0447\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [blow smoke in the authorities\u2019 eyes], that can even be a source of pride and a measure of one\u2019s ability to make the most out of circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, Woland seems to treat Styopa nicely, at least at first. He addresses Styopa as <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0438\u043c\u043f\u0430\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u0435\u0439\u0448\u0438\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0421\u0442\u0435\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d <\/strong><strong>\u0411\u043e\u0433\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u0432\u0438\u0447\u00bb<\/strong> [most amiable Stepan Bogdanovich]. He treats Styopa\u2019s hangover with some impeccably-served <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0445\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u0447\u0438\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0430\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [cold and hot appetizers] and a bit of cold vodka, relying on the good old <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u043b\u0438\u043d <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u043c <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u044b\u0448\u0438\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [the hair of the dog that bit you] approach. He obliges Styopa\u2019s <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0430\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0432\u0447\u0438\u0432\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [forgetfulness] and fills in the blanks in Styopa\u2019s memory.\u00a0 And even though he teaches Styopa a lesson after all, the punishment is relatively mild compared to those metered to Berlioz (death) and the young poet Bezdomniy (madness).<\/p>\n<p>And how about the <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435\u0445\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0448\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0432\u0430\u0440\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u0430 \u211650\u00bb<\/strong> [the evil apartment #50]? Turns out, Woland taking up residence there only reinforces the apartment\u2019s already-established reputation as a place where <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0447\u0451\u0440\u0442 <\/strong><strong>\u0437\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442 <\/strong><strong>\u0447\u0442\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0442\u0432\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [devil knows what happens]. The apartment was a place of many <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435\u043e\u0431\u044a\u044f\u0441\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0438\u0441\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [unexplained incidents] when people disappeared without a trace or as they say in Russia, <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0430\u043a <\/strong><strong>\u0432 <\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0443\u0442 <\/strong><strong>\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0443\u043b\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [lit. to fall into a deep swimming hole]. And you probably know who lives at the bottom of that deep hole, right? (Hint: <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432 <\/strong><strong>\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0445\u043e\u043c <\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0443\u0442\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0442\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u044f\u0442\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [lit. the demons lurk in the deep water]).<\/p>\n<p>The novel was written during the time when purges where getting more and more terrifying and all-encompassing; when a single ill-spoken word could lead to the disappearance of not only the hapless person who uttered it, but those who were near enough to hear it. It was the time when people left for work not knowing whether they would return to their loved ones that evening or not, as the nameless lodger who <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0435\u0440\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u043b\u0441\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043a\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u0437 <\/strong><strong>\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u044f\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0438\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0442, <\/strong><strong>\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u043e\u043e\u0431\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0438\u043a\u043e\u0433\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0435\u0440\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u043b\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [not only did not return in ten minutes, he never returned at all].<\/p>\n<p>Many were picked up in the middle of the night, hence Anfisa\u2019s comment that she <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0437\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442, <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0442\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0443\u0442\u0430\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b <\/strong><strong>\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0436\u0438\u043b\u044c\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0438\u043b\u0438\u0446\u0438\u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0430, <\/strong><strong>\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043a\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u043a <\/strong><strong>\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0442 <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [knows who it was that had spirited away both the lodge and the policeman, only she didn\u2019t want to say because it was almost night time.]<\/p>\n<p>Those arrested were subjected to intense interrogations and threats and frequently confessed to things they\u2019ve never said or done and listed other innocents as their accomplices. Those poor souls were arrested next and the cycle repeated itself, drawing more and more terrified people into the vortex. <strong>\u00ab\u041d\u0443, \u0430 \u043a\u043e\u043b\u0434\u043e\u0432\u0441\u0442\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>, \u043a\u0430\u043a \u0438\u0437\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043d\u043e, \u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0438\u0442 \u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043a\u043e \u043d\u0430\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f, \u0430 \u0442\u0430\u043c \u0443\u0436 \u0435\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span> \u043d\u0438\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043c \u043d\u0435 \u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0438\u0448\u044c.\u00bb<\/strong> [Well, as everyone knows, once witchcraft gets started, there\u2019s no stopping it.]<\/p>\n<p>The arrests were accompanied by searches &#8211; <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432 \u211650-<\/strong><strong>\u043c <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0441\u044e <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u043e\u0447\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0448\u0430\u043b\u0438\u0441\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0430\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0435-<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u043a\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0438&#8230; <\/strong><strong>\u0434\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0443\u0442\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0432 <\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u043a\u043d\u0430\u0445 <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b <\/strong><strong>\u044d\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0442\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0432\u0435\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [knocking sounds were heard in #50 all night long and\u2026 the lights were on until daybreak].<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I think Chapter 7 is the first chapter in which Bulgakov openly declares that forces a lot more dangerous and evil than Woland had been at play in Moscow for quite some time.
