Anyone who has been keeping an eye on the Russian news lately can\u2019t possible have missed the heat wave\u00a0that has almost paralyzed everyone\u00a0\u00ab<\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u0435\u0432\u0440\u043e\u043f\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0439 <\/strong>\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0438 <\/strong>\u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0439 <\/strong>\u0444\u0435\u0434\u0435\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [in the European part of the Russian Federation]. Temperatures between 30 and 40 degrees Celsius in the summer are nothing out of the ordinary in places like the Urals or Siberia, but those\u00a0Russian regions\u00a0have a \u00ab<\/strong>\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0437\u043a\u043e <\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u043d\u0442\u0438\u043d\u0435\u043d\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><\/a>\u043a\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u0430\u0442<\/a>\u00bb<\/strong> [drastic continental climate] that is indeed much more \u00ab<\/strong>\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0437\u043a\u0438\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [adj.<\/em> abrupt, harsh, drastic] than the simply \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u043d\u0442\u0438\u043d\u0435\u043d\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/a><\/strong>\u043a\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u0430\u0442<\/a>\u00bb<\/strong> [continental climate<\/a>] in other parts of the country we all love. The summer of 2010 is most likely going to be \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u043e\u0435 <\/strong>\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u043e\u0435 <\/strong>\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [the hottest summer] since the 1930\u2019s \u2013 maybe the hottest summer EVER in Russia. This is of course a good reason to add a very useful word to our constantly expanding Russian \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u043f\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u00bb<\/strong> [vocabulary]: \u00ab<\/strong>\u0436\u0430\u0440\u0430<\/span><\/a>\u00bb<\/strong> [heat]. This word is a feminine noun that has a couple of \u2018word friends\u2019<\/em> closely linked to it, like the adjective \u00ab<\/strong>\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0438\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [1. <\/strong>hot; 2.<\/strong> fig.<\/em> heated, passionate, intense], the adverb \u00ab<\/strong>\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [(used predicatively)<\/em> hot] and the verb \u00ab<\/strong>\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [impfv.<\/em>, 1.<\/strong> to fry, roast, broil; 2.<\/strong> colloq. (of the sun) <\/em>to beat down (on)<\/em>]. There\u2019s also the masculine noun \u00ab<\/strong>\u0436\u0430\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [1.<\/strong> heat; 2.<\/strong> fever, high temperature; 3.<\/strong> fig.<\/em> ardor, fervor] used in the expression \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u0436\u0430\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [running a high fever], and not to be entirely confused with our word of the week \u00ab<\/strong>\u0436\u0430\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [heat].<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t forget to drink \u00ab<\/strong><\/em>\u043c\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u043e <\/em><\/strong>\u0432\u043e\u0434\u044b<\/span>\u00bb<\/em><\/strong> [a lot of water] when it’s \u00ab<\/strong><\/em>\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u043e\u00bb <\/em><\/strong>[hot]! In Russia you can either spend money on bottled \u00ab<\/strong><\/em>\u043b\u044e\u043a\u0441 <\/em><\/strong>\u0432\u043e\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/em><\/strong> [\u2018luxury water\u2019] \u2013 as seen in the background on this photo \u2013 or do as the natives and get it fresh for free from a pump in the street. I think it is rather obvious what I prefer \u2013 and it is \u00ab<\/strong><\/em>\u0432\u043a\u0443\u0441\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0435\u00bb<\/em><\/strong> [(comparative) tastier] too!<\/em><\/p>\n

What does \u00ab<\/strong>\u0436\u0430\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [heat] \u2018do\u2019<\/em> in Russian language, then? What verb should you use with it? Believe it or not, but in Russian heat \u2018stands\u2019<\/em>: \u00ab<\/strong>\u0436\u0430\u0440\u0430<\/span> <\/strong>\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [lit.<\/em> \u2018heat stands\u2019, but better: \u2018it is hot\u2019]. A popular adjective to use together with this particular noun is \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0435\u0432\u044b\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u044b\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [unbearable, unendurable, insufferable], and because \u00ab<\/strong>\u0436\u0430\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [heat] is a feminine noun, you\u2019ll have to change the adjective accordingly, thus the correct combination is the following: \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0435\u0432\u044b\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u0430\u044f <\/strong>\u0436\u0430\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [unbearable heat]. Here\u2019s a Russian sentence worth memorizing for future discussions about the summer of 2010:<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u0412\u0441\u0451 \u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u043e \u0441\u0442\u043e\u044f<\/span>\u043b\u0430 \u043d\u0435\u0432\u044b\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u0430\u044f \u0436\u0430\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> – [lit<\/em>.<\/em> \u2018The whole summer stood an unbearable heat\u2019, but better: \u2018There was an unbearable heat all summer long\u2019 or \u2018It was unbearably hot all summer long\u2019].<\/p>\n

But to \u00ab<\/strong><\/em>\u043f\u0438\u0442\u044c <\/em><\/strong>\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043a\u043e <\/em><\/strong>\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0443\u00bb<\/em><\/strong> [drink only water] can get rather boring, no matter how healthy it is and good for your body \u00ab<\/strong><\/em>\u0432 <\/em><\/strong>\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0443\u044e <\/em><\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0443\u00bb<\/em><\/strong> [(accusative case: when?) in hot weather] \u2013 even more so considering all the options you have to choose from<\/a> when in need of \u00ab<\/strong><\/em>\u0447\u0442\u043e<\/span>–<\/em><\/strong>\u043d\u0438\u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u044c <\/em><\/strong>\u0445\u043e\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u043e\u0435\u00bb <\/em><\/strong>[something cold]. You can buy \u00ab<\/strong><\/em>\u0445\u043e\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u043e\u0435 <\/em><\/strong>\u043f\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u00bb<\/em><\/strong> [cold beer] in the street in Russia like in the picture above, for example. Everyone reading this blog seems to be in love with \u00ab<\/strong><\/em>\u0445\u043e\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/em><\/strong>\u043a\u0432\u0430\u0441\u00bb<\/em><\/strong> [cold kvas]. Personally I prefer \u00ab<\/strong><\/em>\u0445\u043e\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/em><\/strong>\u043c\u043e\u0440\u0441<\/a>\u00bb<\/em><\/strong> [cold \u2018mors\u2019 <\/a>(special kind of Russian fruit drink)]. And then there\u2019s always the obvious choice of \u00ab<\/strong><\/em>\u0445\u043e\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u0430\u044f <\/em><\/strong>\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/em><\/strong> [cold vodka]\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

It may be rather obvious to everyone reading this blog this far into today\u2019s post that there are several ways one could translate the English sentence \u201cIt\u2019s hot today\u201d into Russian. Here are three suggestions using three different types of words:<\/p>\n

Using the noun \u00ab\u0436\u0430\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>: \u00ab\u0421\u0435\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044f \u0441\u0442\u043e\u0438<\/span>\u0442 \u0436\u0430\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [lit<\/em>.<\/em> \u2018Today heat stands\u2019].<\/p>\n

Using the adverb \u00ab<\/strong>\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u043e\u00bb<\/strong>: \u00ab<\/strong>\u0421\u0435\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044f <\/strong>\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [lit.<\/em> \u2018Today it is hot\u2019].<\/p>\n

Using the adjective \u00ab\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0438\u0439\u00bb<\/strong>: \u00ab\u0421\u0435\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044f \u0436\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0430\u044f \u043f\u043e\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [lit<\/em>.<\/em> \u2018Today the weather\u2019s hot\u2019].<\/p>\n

Some people like it hot \u2013 are you one of them? Personally, I have no trouble dealing even with severe heat. I like to feel the sweat run down along my skin when lying in the sun as I\u2019m trying to \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u0433\u043e\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb <\/strong>[pfv.<\/em> get sunburned; get a tan]. I rarely get \u2018too hot\u2019<\/em> \u2013 I think that\u2019s \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0435\u0432\u043e\u0437\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e\u00bb <\/strong>[impossible] when it comes to me. I appreciate the true and intense heat of \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0430\u0441\u0442\u043e\u044f<\/span>\u0449\u0430\u044f <\/strong>\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f <\/strong>\u0431\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [a real Russian \u2018banya\u2019<\/em>] so much that I have been known to \u2018out-sit\u2019<\/em> even quite a few Russians over the years. I\u2019m the kind of person that sleeps in a hooded sweatshirt (with the hood up!)<\/em> and sweatpants no matter the season, because I\u2019m persistently afraid that \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432\u0434\u0440\u0443\u0433 <\/strong>\u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0442 <\/strong>\u0445\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0434\u043d\u043e\u00bb <\/strong>[suddenly it will become cold]. I am definitely one of those people that like it hot. Then you might wonder how I survived in Russia? Well \u2013 and I\u2019ve tried to tell people this for years now \u2013 Russia is not a cold country. Yes, the winters there are cold \u00ab<\/strong>\u041d\u0410 <\/strong>\u0423<\/span><\/strong>\u041b\u0418\u0426\u0415\u00bb<\/strong> [lit.<\/em> \u2018ON THE STREET\u2019, but actually meaning: OUTSIDE]. But Russia is always much warmer than any other place \u00ab<\/strong>\u0414\u041e<\/span>\u041c\u0410\u00bb<\/strong> [AT HOME, or also: INSIDE]. And you have the hot summers to look forward to\u2026<\/p>\n

When \u00ab<\/strong><\/em>\u0432\u0435\u0447\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u044f\u044f <\/em><\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0445\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u0430\u00bb <\/em><\/strong>[the cool of the evening] comes \u00ab<\/strong><\/em>\u043f\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u0435 <\/em><\/strong>\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e <\/em><\/strong>\u0434\u043d\u044f\u00bb <\/em><\/strong>[after a hot day] it is always very pleasant \u00ab<\/strong><\/em>\u043a\u0443\u043f\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f <\/em><\/strong>\u0432 <\/em><\/strong>\u0440\u0435\u043a\u0435<\/span>\u00bb<\/em><\/strong> [impfv. to go swimming in a\/the river]. This is an evening scene from a village by the river \u00ab<\/strong><\/em>\u0422\u0430\u0433\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u00bb<\/em><\/strong> [Tagil] in the Urals.<\/em><\/p>\n

The verb most commonly used together with our word of the week \u00ab<\/strong>\u0436\u0430\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [heat] is \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432\u044b<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0438\u0442\u044c\u00bb [<\/strong>impfv.<\/em>, here: to stand, bear, endure]. The perfect \u2018friend\u2019<\/em> of this verb is \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432\u044b<\/span>\u043d\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [and that means that the meaning is the same]. Together with this verb you\u2019ll have to put \u00ab<\/strong>\u0436\u0430\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [heat] in \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432\u0438\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong>\u043f\u0430\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u0436\u00bb <\/strong>[accusative case] and this asking the question \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e<\/span>?\/<\/strong>\u0447\u0442\u043e?\u00bb<\/strong> [who?\/what?] leads to this word taking the form of \u00ab<\/strong>\u0436\u0430\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>. Here you have a couple of sentences that illustrate this combination:<\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/strong>\u042f <\/strong>\u0445\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0448\u043e<\/span> <\/strong>\u0432\u044b\u043d\u043e\u0448\u0443<\/span> <\/strong>\u0436\u0430\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [I stand the heat well].<\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/strong>\u041e\u043d <\/strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong>\u0432\u044b\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0438\u0442 <\/strong>\u0436\u0430\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [he can\u2019\u0435 stand the heat].<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s not the only noun that can be used together with this verb. In Russian language \u2013 as in any other language, for that matter \u2013 it is possible to not stand a wide range of different things. For example, other people:<\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/strong>\u042f <\/strong>\u0442\u0435\u0431\u044f<\/span> <\/strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong>\u0432\u044b\u043d\u043e\u0448\u0443<\/span>!\u00bb<\/strong> [I can’t stand you!]<\/p>\n

And when you can\u2019t stand the heat, there\u2019s one thing you need to know how to say before you say anything else:<\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/strong>\u041c\u043d\u0435 <\/strong>\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u043e!\u00bb<\/strong> [I\u2019m hot!].<\/p>\n

When you say this in Russian, please remember that it does not have the same connotation as the English translation \u2018I\u2019m hot\u2019<\/em> in the sense of \u2018I\u2019m attractive (to the opposite sex)\u2019<\/em>, because the \u2018I\u2019<\/em> of the Russian sentence is not the subject but the object (in dative)<\/em>. That\u2019s why you shouldn\u2019t try to compliment an attractive Russian girl by saying \u00ab<\/strong>\u0442\u044b <\/strong>\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0430\u044f <\/strong>\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u0443\u0448\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> – because even though it translates directly into \u2018you\u2019re a hot girl\u2019<\/em> that\u2019s not at all what it means. Stick to standard adjectives like \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u0430\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [beautiful], \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0438\u043c\u043f\u0430\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u0430\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [cute] or \u00ab<\/strong>\u043c\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [sweet] if you want to make sure to get your message of humble appreciation and gentlemanly interest across.<\/p>\n

You can, however, use the adjective \u00ab<\/strong>\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0438\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> in the sense of \u2018a heated discussion\u2019 like this: \u00ab<\/strong>\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0430\u044f <\/strong>\u0434\u0438\u0441\u043a\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [heated discussion].<\/p>\n

Really, the topic of standard combinations \u2018adjective + noun\u2019<\/em> in Russian versus the same \u2018adjective + noun’<\/em> in English \u2013 with the risk of the direct English translation being both weird and silly \u2013 deserves a post of it\u2019s own!
