If you follow international news, you might have heard about two Russian men who were accused of poisoning a Russian defector<\/a> in Salisbury, England. As with any contentious, developing story, there are conflicting accounts of what happened, so I will include quotes from various news outlets covering it.<\/p>\n

What Happened?<\/h2>\n

In early March 2018, former intelligence officer Sergei Skripal (\u0421\u0435\u0440\u0433\u0435\u0301\u0439 \u0421\u043a\u0440\u0438\u043f\u0430\u0301\u043b\u044c), who had defected to the UK, and his daughter Yulia (\u042e\u0301\u043b\u0438\u044f) were found unconscious on a park bench. Skripal had worked for a military intelligence agency, known as GRU (\u0413\u0420\u0423) prior to 2010.<\/p>\n

The two survived, and it was established that they likely came into contact with a nerve agent called Novichok (\u043d\u043e\u0432\u0438\u0447\u043e\u0301\u043a). Later, two civilians and a police officer (\u043f\u043e\u043b\u0438\u0446\u0435\u0301\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439) were poisoned, and one of these people victims died.<\/p>\n

Whodunit?<\/h2>\n

UK authorities released CCTV images of two Russian nationals who were accused of poisoning the Skripals. The alleged perpetrators’ names were Aleksandr Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov (\u0410\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0441\u0430\u0301\u043d\u0434\u0440 \u041f\u0435\u0442\u0440\u043e\u0301\u0432 \u0438 \u0420\u0443\u0441\u043b\u0430\u0301\u043d \u0411\u043e\u0448\u0438\u0301\u0440\u043e\u0432), although the police emphasized that these names could be fake. The Russian government has denied any involvement.<\/p>\n

Salisbury Tourists?<\/h2>\n

In a bizarre turn of events, the two suspects appeared on the Russian-government-sponsored RT network<\/a>. They claimed they were regular tourists (\u0442\u0443\u0440\u0438\u0301\u0441\u0442\u044b) enticed by the Salisbury cathedral and had nothing to do with the poisoning. The Russian internet found their stilted descriptions of the “123-meter spire” (\u0448\u043f\u0438\u043b\u044c) odd for tourists and erupted in memes and parodies<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The investigative outlet Bellingcat<\/a> has since gone through images of military academy graduates and through the biographical details of the supposed “Petrov” and “Boshirov.” Based on this information, they claim to have established the real identities of the two men \u2014 Aleksandr Mishkin and Anatoly Chepiga (\u0410\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0441\u0430\u0301\u043d\u0434\u0440 \u041c\u0438\u0301\u0448\u043a\u0438\u043d \u0438 \u0410\u043d\u0430\u0442\u043e\u0301\u043b\u0438\u0439 \u0427\u0435\u043f\u0438\u0301\u0433\u0430). Former co-workers and classmates have since come forward saying they recognized the two as being the Salisbury suspects.<\/p>\n

\nAccording to Yevdokimov, he recognized Petrov right after the interview given to [RT anchor] Margarita Simonyan came out. Afterwards, he made a Facebook post and asked his Gar\u00e7on restaurant co-workers, who agreed that “Petrov” looked like the former waiter Aleksandr Mishkin.<\/p>\n
