However, it often comes up during cross-cultural encounters that different cultures have different ideas of what makes a healthy diet. Another drawback people mention is heartburn (<strong>\u0438\u0437\u0436\u043e\u0301\u0433\u0430<\/strong>). Whether people follow this advice is another story. \ud83d\ude42 Nor does this mean that people don&#8217;t add sugar (<strong>\u0441\u0430\u0301\u0445\u0430\u0440<\/strong>) to their morning oatmeal (<strong>\u043a\u0430\u0301\u0448\u0430<\/strong> for any hot cereal or <strong>\u0433\u0435\u0440\u043a\u0443\u043b\u0435\u0301\u0441<\/strong> for oats proper). This only means that most Russians believe a real meal should be savory, and anything that&#8217;s sweet only is a dessert (<strong>\u0434\u0435\u0441\u0435\u0301\u0440\u0442<\/strong>). In other words, an Italian-style coffee-and-croissant breakfast (<strong>\u043a\u043e\u0301\u0444\u0435 \u0441 \u043a\u0440\u0443\u0430\u0441\u0441\u0430\u0301\u043d\u043e\u043c<\/strong>) is not considered a balanced meal, even though some Russians may eat that way. There is even a special adverb to express your disapproval for eating dry food:<strong> \u0435\u0441\u0442\u044c \u0432\u0441\u0443\u0445\u043e\u043c\u044f\u0301\u0442\u043a\u0443<\/strong> loosely translates to &#8220;eat dry.&#8221; Soups are an indispensable part of a healthy diet in the Russian mind, and I have heard many a Russian expat express their disdain about their child not being offered soup in their overseas daycare or school. Many daycares and schools will have\u00a0<em>kefir\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>tvorog\u00a0<\/em>on their menu. Granted, no one in developed countries thinks that French fries are healthy, either, but, in my experience, this kind of food is more accepted as an occasional treat. Moreover, in the US, sometimes schools will serve things like burgers or pizza.<\/p>\n<p>Parents may catch hostile stares of even verbal rebukes if they feed this kind of food to their children. Now, that is not to say that all Russian food is healthy and free of junk calories. Nor is it to say that no one patronizes fast food chains\u2014I spent many an afternoon with my Russian high school classmates in what we then called &#8220;\u041c\u0430\u043a\u0434\u0430\u0301\u043a&#8221; (McDuck, aka McDonald&#8217;s). However, &#8220;Western&#8221; fast food is generally not seen as normal or commonplace, and you can easily find an older person, especially in smaller towns, who has never tried it.<\/p>\n<p>I hope this was helpful, and next time you hear some &#8220;weird&#8221; opinion from a Russian person, you&#8217;ll know where they are coming from.
