Russian has a few fun sayings for talking about getting your hopes up\u2014and getting them crushed. Let’s look at three of them with examples and explanations.<\/p>\n

\u0413\u0443\u0301\u0431\u044b<\/strong> is the plural of \u0433\u0443\u0431\u0430\u0301<\/strong>, lip. \u0420\u0430\u0441\u043a\u0430\u0442\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> is related to \u043a\u0430\u0442\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> and means “to roll out.” So, all together, this saying means “to roll out your lips.” This is a somewhat disparaging way of referring to someone who got ready to receive great benefits before that actually happened\u2014who counted their chicks before they hatched, if you will. Mind that this expression is fairly colloquial and would probably sound rude in a work presentation or any formal setting.<\/p>\n

\u041b\u0435\u0442\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c-\u043b\u0435\u0442\u0435\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (both imperfective) is one of Russian infamous verbs of motion. As a quick review, \u043b\u0435\u0442\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> refers to flying back and forth and\/or repeatedly, and \u043b\u0435\u0442\u0435\u0442\u044c means to be flying in one direction or at the moment. \u041f\u0440\u043e\u043b\u0435\u0442\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c\/\u043f\u0440\u043e\u043b\u0435\u0442\u0435\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (imperf.\/perf.) here means “to fly by or fly over something.” In a slang sense of the word, \u043f\u0440\u043e\u043b\u0435\u0442\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> means to be left with nothing or to miss out on something desired. You may also hear the expression “\u043f\u0440\u043e\u043b\u0435\u0442\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c \u043a\u0430\u043a \u0444\u0430\u043d\u0435\u0301\u0440\u0430 \u043d\u0430\u0434 \u041f\u0430\u0440\u0438\u0301\u0436\u0435\u043c<\/strong>” (literally, “to fly like cardboard over Paris”). The origin<\/a> of this expression is disputed.
