If you read articles on Russian media websites, you might have noticed a paper airplane icon inviting you to follow the publication on Telegram<\/a>. A lot of people writing in Russian use this relatively new app, so it can be a valuable tool for reading a variety of Russian news and commentary on social media.<\/p>\n

What’s Special About Telegram?<\/h2>\n

As you may already know, VK, formerly known as Vkontakte (\u0412\u043a\u043e\u043d\u0442\u0430\u0301\u043a\u0442\u0435<\/strong>), is the most popular social network<\/a> in Russia. This network was founded by Pavel Durov (\u041f\u0430\u0301\u0432\u0435\u043b \u0414\u0443\u0301\u0440\u043e\u0432<\/strong>) in 2007. In 2014, Durov resigned as the CEO\u2014according to him, he was pushed out<\/a> due to his refusal to turn over user data to state security agencies.<\/p>\n

In 2013, Durov and his brother launched a messaging app (\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043b\u043e\u0436\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong>) called Telegram<\/a>. Because it offered encryption (\u0448\u0438\u0444\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0301\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong>), Russian security agencies claimed that the app may be used by terrorists and demanded that the developers turn over the encryption keys. Telegram refused and was blocked in Russia in 2018, but remains popular and widely accessible<\/a> despite the ban.<\/p>\n

Apart from its private messaging feature, Telegram has public “channels” (\u043a\u0430\u043d\u0430\u0301\u043b\u044b<\/strong>) you can follow (\u043f\u043e\u0434\u043f\u0438\u0441\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u043d\u0430 \u043a\u0430\u043d\u0430\u0301\u043b<\/strong>, literally “subscribe”). I have found some of these channels quite interesting in terms of keeping up with new developments in the Russian language and opinions on various issues. It’s a subjective collection shaped by my interests and preferences, but I hope you find some of these resources informative and can use them as a starting point for discovering content that reflects your own interests.<\/p>\n

Russian Media and Opinion<\/h2>\n

Many Russian media outlets, from the state-run ones like Russia Today, to the opposition Meduza (\u041c\u0435\u0434\u0443\u0301\u0437\u0430) or Dozhd (\u0414\u043e\u0436\u0434\u044c), have a presence on Telegram. Here are some that cover Russian and international news\u2014the list is by no means exhaustive!<\/p>\n

  1. \u0421\u043d\u043e\u0431<\/strong><\/a> (Snob)\u2014high-brow liberal magazine known for its commentary and columnists.<\/li>\n
  2. \u0410\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0441\u0435\u0301\u0439 \u041a\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043b\u0451\u0432<\/strong><\/a> (Alexey Kovalev)\u2014investigative journalist and mythbuster.<\/li>\n
  3. M\u0435\u0434\u0443\u0301\u0437\u0430<\/strong><\/a> (Meduza)\u2014Russian-language outlet headquartered in Latvia, focusing on current event and analysis.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Stories from Other Countries in Russian<\/h2>\n

    Here are some channels that focus on what’s happening in other regions and countries and write about it in Russian.<\/p>\n

    1. DW<\/a><\/strong> (Deutsche Welle)\u2014covers stories from Germany for a Russian “outsider” audience.<\/li>\n
    2. \u0411\u0430\u0433\u0440\u0430\u043c\u044f\u0301\u043d 26<\/strong><\/a> (Bagramyan 26)\u2014a channel that reports news from Armenia. Unfortunately, neither Russian media nor those in Europe or the US cover this country a lot (readers from other regions, do chime in\u2014do you hear about Armenia often?).<\/li>\n
    3. \u0411\u0435\u043b\u0430\u0440\u0443\u0301\u0441\u044c \u0433\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0432\u043d\u043e\u0301\u0433\u043e \u043c\u043e\u0301\u0437\u0433\u0430<\/strong><\/a> (Belarus of the Brain)\u2014talks about politics and society in Belarus.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Science<\/h2>\n

      I have also started reading a few science channels dedicated to areas from biology to astrology. No politics, only science. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

      2. \u041d\u0430\u043c\u043e\u0447\u0438\u0301 \u041c\u0430\u043d\u0442\u0443\u0301<\/strong><\/a> (Get Your PPD Wet)\u2014the name of this channel comes from the dated medical advice to keep your tuberculosis skin test dry. The channel shares medical information and busts health myths.<\/li>\n
      3. Funscience<\/strong><\/a>\u2014covers different scientific discoveries. This channel may be interesting for anyone wanting to pick up natural science vocabulary in Russian.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
