Incidentally, a recent ad campaign by Reebok has started a heated debate\u2014and backlash\u2014around the subject of gender roles, feminism, and appropriate behavio(u)r.<\/p>\n<p>A couple of warnings are in order. While this post does not feature obscene language, it does mention risque themes in advertising. A marketing manager for the Russian subsidiary got in touch with the blogger and activist Zalina Marshenkulova (<strong>\u0417\u0430\u043b\u0438\u0301\u043d\u0430 \u041c\u0430\u0440\u0448\u0435\u043d\u043a\u0443\u0301\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/strong>). Zalina is known for her <a href=\"https:\/\/web.telegram.org\/#\/im?p=@vlast_Zh\">Telegram channel<\/a> &#8220;<strong>\u0416\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u0432\u043b\u0430\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/strong>&#8221; (loosely translated as &#8220;Girl Power&#8221;), where she criticizes sexism and objectification of women in advertising.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, the campaign was adapted to feature female athletes and Zalina, who talked about how women can do anything. The Russian campaign was labeled with the hashtag &#8220;<strong>\u041d\u0438 \u0432 \u043a\u0430\u043a\u0438\u0435 \u0440\u0430\u0301\u043c\u043a\u0438<\/strong>&#8221; (&#8220;Out of line&#8221;). Here is the video that accompanied the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=188&#038;v=kGuxAaOFBAI<\/p>\n<h2>What&#8217;s Wrong With That?<\/h2>\n<p>One of the images that upset many commentators was one featuring the crouching Zalina and the slogan &#8220;<strong>\u041f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0441\u044f\u0301\u0434\u044c \u0441 \u0438\u0433\u043b\u044b\u0301 \u043c\u0443\u0436\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0301\u0433\u043e \u043e\u0434\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0438\u044f \u043d\u0430 \u043c\u0443\u0436\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0301\u0435 \u043b\u0438\u0446\u043e\u0301<\/strong>.&#8221; Let&#8217;s break down this phrase to see what the fuss is all about.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u041f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0430\u0301\u0436\u0438\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\/\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0435\u0301\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/strong> means to switch seats. As you may recall from our verbs with prefixes posts, <strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435<\/strong>&#8211; means to change or re-do. For example, <strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0435\u0301\u0445\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> means to move house. Similarly, <strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0435\u0301\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/strong> refers to moving to a different seat.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u0418\u0433\u043b\u0430\u0301<\/strong> literally means &#8220;needle.&#8221; A slang saying for being addicted to injectable drugs is <strong>\u0441\u0438\u0434\u0435\u0301\u0442\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u0438\u0433\u043b\u0435\u0301<\/strong>, hence the reference to sitting with the verb \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0435\u0441\u0442\u044c. The Russian translation of the book and film\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trainspotting_(film)\">Trainspotting<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was &#8220;<strong>\u041d\u0430 \u0438\u0433\u043b\u0435\u0301<\/strong>&#8221; (more or less, &#8220;Addicted&#8221;).<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u041c\u0443\u0436\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0301\u0439<\/strong> means &#8220;men&#8217;s&#8221; or &#8220;male.&#8221; For instance, <strong>\u043c\u0443\u0436\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0301\u0439 \u0440\u043e\u0434<\/strong> refers to the masculine gender in grammar, and <strong>\u043c\u0443\u0436\u0441\u043a\u0430\u0301\u044f \u043e\u0434\u0435\u0301\u0436\u0434\u0430<\/strong> refers to men&#8217;s clothes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u041e\u0434\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong> is approval. At the time of writing, the campaign video had 13 thousand dislikes on YouTube (and ten times fewer likes). Many commentators vowed to never buy Reebok again and to get rid of the brand&#8217;s products.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign was swiftly pulled. The marketing manager in charge of the campaign, Aleksandr Golofast (<strong>\u0410\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0441\u0430\u0301\u043d\u0434\u0440 \u0413\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0444\u0430\u0301\u0441\u0442<\/strong>), said that top management had known about the Russian campaign and approved it. Golofast quit in protest. The reaction to the campaign might have been negative, but other brands started imitating the controversial slogan. It sure seems like the company is facing a lot of backlash, and the Russian public has a strong visceral reaction to such explicit approaches to women&#8217;s empowerment.
