You might have read in the news that residents of the city of Yekaterinburg are protesting the construction of a church in place of a park, and it’s even come to clashes with the police. Let’s look at some of the background and coverage of this situation.<\/p>\n

Where is this again?<\/h2>\n

Yekaterinburg<\/a>, \u0415\u043a\u0430\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0438\u043d\u0431\u0443\u0301\u0440\u0433<\/strong> in Russian, is a city in the Urals (\u0423\u0440\u0430\u0301\u043b<\/strong>) and the 4th largest city in Russia. It is known, among other things, as the place where the last Russian czar Nicolas II (\u041d\u0438\u043a\u043e\u043b\u0430\u0301\u0439 \u0412\u0442\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0301\u0439<\/strong>) are his family were brutally killed by the Bolsheviks, and the hometown of the first Russian president Boris Yeltsin (\u0411\u043e\u0440\u0438\u0301\u0441 \u0415\u0301\u043b\u044c\u0446\u0438\u043d<\/strong>). During the Soviet period, it was called Sverdlovsk (\u0421\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0434\u043b\u043e\u0301\u0432\u0441\u043a<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Why build this church?<\/h2>\n

The latest conflict started when city authorities decided to build a church (\u0445\u0440\u0430\u043c<\/strong>, literally “temple”) in a small green space (\u0441\u043a\u0432\u0435\u0440<\/strong>, from the English “square”) in the city cent{re\/er}. At least some residents (\u0436\u0438\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0438<\/strong>) are against it, saying the city has enough churches, and this is the only green space in their neighbo{u}rhood (\u0440\u0430\u0439\u043e\u0301\u043d<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Novaya Gazeta (“\u041d\u043e\u0301\u0432\u0430\u044f \u0433\u0430\u0437\u0435\u0301\u0442\u0430<\/strong>“) reports<\/a> that this conflict has been steeping for a few years:<\/p>\n

[Debates about the construction of St. Catherine Church have been raging in Yekaterinburg for as long as 9 years. In 2010, the Yekaterinburg Eparchy<\/a> of the Russian Orthodox Church suggested building a church on Truda Square. Protests erupted in the city, and the eparchy went back on its plans.]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What happened this time around?<\/h2>\n

On May 13, a fence (\u0437\u0430\u0431\u043e\u0301\u0440<\/strong>) was put up around the site of the future church. Protesters took a section of the fence down and kept coming to the park on subsequent nights. Things got physical between the protesters and some muscular men who claimed to be defending the construction site. Several protesters have been injured (\u043f\u043e\u043b\u0443\u0447\u0438\u0301\u043b\u0438 \u0442\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0432\u043c\u044b<\/strong>) and\/or detained (\u0431\u044b\u0301\u043b\u0438 \u0437\u0430\u0434\u0435\u0301\u0440\u0436\u0430\u043d\u044b<\/strong>). What was the reaction?<\/h2>\n

Yekaternburg celebrities were split<\/a> in their attitudes to building the church. Former Youtube sensation and ironic pop singer-songwriter Monetochka<\/a> (\u041c\u043e\u043d\u0435\u0301\u0442\u043e\u0447\u043a\u0430<\/strong>) spoke out against the project, while the lead singer of Chaif<\/a> (\u0427\u0430\u0439\u0444<\/strong>) praised the proposed location as a sensible compromise between the wishes of the believers and other city residents.<\/p>\n

When asked about the situation, Russian president Vladimir Putin (\u0412\u043b\u0430\u0434\u0438\u0301\u043c\u0438\u0440 \u041f\u0443\u0301\u0442\u0438\u043d<\/strong>) implied that protesters may be outside actors and proposed polling the residents to determine the outcome.
