Do you remember Josefina\u2019s post<\/a> about all the English words that are widely used in Russia? I hope you read the comments as well because Neil, Colin, Steve, saint and Svetlana all provided more great examples and insights into these \u201clazy\u201d words.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m in NY now, \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u0433\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044f<\/span>\u0445 <\/strong>\u0443 <\/strong>\u043c\u043e\u0438<\/span>\u0445 <\/strong>\u0440\u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0435\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [visiting my parents] and digging through their books, looking for something to supplement my summer reading list. Guess what I found? \u00ab<\/strong>\u0418<\/span><\/strong>\u0437\u0431\u0440\u0430\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong>\u0430<\/span><\/strong>\u043d\u0433\u043b\u043e-<\/strong>\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 <\/strong>\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 <\/strong>\u0430\u0441\u0441\u043e\u0446\u0438\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u0438: 5000 <\/strong>\u0430\u043d\u0433\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0445 <\/strong>\u0441\u043b\u043e\u0432, <\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u044b\u0435 <\/strong>\u0412\u044b <\/strong>\u0437\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442\u0435, <\/strong>\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0436\u0435 <\/strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong>\u0438\u0437\u0443\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u044f <\/strong>\u0430\u043d\u0433\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [Selected English-Russian Lexical Associations: 5,000 English Words Russians Know Even Without the Study of English]. Ordinarily, learning even 50 new foreign words would sound like a lot of work and 5000 would be a major \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0430\u043f\u0440\u044f<\/span>\u0433\u00bb<\/strong> [stress or crunch]. It\u2019s just not the kind of effort I\u2019d undertake myself or challenge others to in this oppressing \u00ab<\/strong>\u0436\u0430\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [the heat] that seems \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0438\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u043c\u043e\u0437\u0433\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [to melt the brain].<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u0412\u043e\u0442 \u0435<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u0438 \u0431\u044b \u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e \u0431\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u043e \u0431\u0435\u0437 \u043d\u0430\u043f\u0440\u044f<\/span>\u0433\u0430!\u00bb<\/strong> [If only it would be possible without the strain].<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why I was so happy to read, in the book\u2019s introduction that \u00ab<\/strong>\u0412\u044b <\/strong>\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u0435\u0442\u0435 <\/strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong>\u043d\u0430\u043f\u0440\u044f\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u044f\u0441\u044c, <\/strong>\u0437\u0430 <\/strong>\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u043a\u043e\u043b\u044c\u043a\u043e <\/strong>\u0434\u043d\u0435\u0439 <\/strong>\u0440\u0430\u0441\u0448\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u0441\u0432\u043e\u0439 <\/strong>\u0430\u043d\u0433\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 <\/strong>\u0441\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u043f\u0430<\/span>\u0441 <\/strong>\u043d\u0430 5000 <\/strong>\u0441\u043b\u043e\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> [Without straining yourself and in just a few days you can expand your English vocabulary by 5000 words].<\/p>\n

I figured, since the book is essentially a Russian-English dictionary it can be used by English-speaking students to learn Russian words. Except, of course, you won\u2019t have to do any learning! After all, \u00ab\u0432\u044b \u0443\u0436\u0435<\/span> \u0437\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442\u0435 \u043f\u043e \u043a\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0439\u043d\u0435\u0439 \u043c\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0435 5000 \u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0445 \u0441\u043b\u043e\u0432!!!\u00bb<\/strong> [you already know at least 5000 Russian words!!!].<\/p>\n

The cool thing is that the book does not include too many \u00ab<\/strong>\u0442\u0435\u0445\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 <\/strong>\u0438 <\/strong>\u043c\u0435\u0434\u0438\u0446\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 <\/strong>\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u043c\u0438\u043d\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [technical and medical terminology] which is not really something we use in everyday speech anyway. The not so good news are lots of typos and weird way of transcribing English words.<\/p>\n

Of course, I\u2019m not going to list all 5000 words from the book. That\u2019d be \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u043a\u0443<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [boring]. So instead I\u2019m going to randomly select 5 nouns. Here we go\u2026<\/p>\n

Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to build a sentence using all or some of these words and derived adjectives and verbs.<\/p>\n

Bonus point for using the verb \u00ab<\/strong>\u043b\u043e\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0438\u0442\u044c\u00bb,<\/strong> which as far as I understand is used to describe a process of ripping people off through lotteries as well as the participation in said lotteries.<\/p>\n

Finally, if you speak French as well as English, you are set for life! Turns out, there are a lot more Russian words that are borrowed from French than from English. Some of the most commonly used ones include \u00ab<\/strong>\u0448\u0435\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [masterpiece], \u00ab<\/strong>\u044d\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [elite], \u00ab<\/strong>\u0434\u0435\u043a\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [cleavage], \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u043a\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [coquetry], \u00ab<\/strong>\u0448\u0430\u043d\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0436\u00bb<\/strong> [blackmail], \u00ab<\/strong>\u043c\u043e\u0440\u0433\u00bb<\/strong> [morgue], \u00ab<\/strong>\u0440\u0435\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0448\u00bb<\/strong> [revenge] and \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u043b\u044f\u0436\u00bb<\/strong> [beach].<\/p>\n

If you think that this set of words is more exciting, feel free to build sentences with those instead of the original 5 or to mix and match.<\/p>\n
