As expected, English was in the first place, at close to 54%.<\/li>\n<li>At the time of writing this post, there were <a href=\"https:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%97%D0%B0%D0%B3%D0%BB%D0%B0%D0%B2%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%8F_%D1%81%D1%82%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%B8%D1%86%D0%B0\">1 548 000 Wikipedia articles<\/a> written in Russian.<\/li>\n<li>As of 2019, 68% of Russians said they <a href=\"https:\/\/wciom.ru\/news\/ratings\/polzovanie_internetom\/\">used the Internet daily<\/a>, and a further 10% used it several times a week.<\/li>\n<li>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alexa.com\/topsites\/countries\/RU\">Alexa<\/a>, the most popular websites in Russia were YouTube, the search engine <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/how-to-google-or-perform-an-internet-search-in-russian-effectively\/\">Yandex<\/a> (<strong>\u042f\u0301\u043d\u0434\u0435\u043a\u0441<\/strong>), and the social network Vk.com, formerly known as <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/social-networking-in-russia\/\">Vkontakte<\/a> (&#8220;<strong>\u0412\u043a\u043e\u043d\u0442\u0430\u0301\u043a\u0442\u0435<\/strong>,&#8221; which translates to &#8220;in touch&#8221;).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div id=\"attachment_11764\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11764\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11764\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/06\/books-1024x679.jpg\" alt=\"Books in Russian stacked\" width=\"1024\" height=\"679\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/06\/books-1024x679.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/06\/books-350x232.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/06\/books-768x509.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11764\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/@darya_kraplak?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText\">Da Kraplak<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/search\/photos\/russian-language?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText\">Unsplash<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Russian <span title=\"In real life\">IRL<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>As of 2012, there were 265 million <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethnologue.com\/21\/language\/rus\/\">speakers of Russian<\/a> in the world, 110 million of who used it as their first language.<\/li>\n<li>The US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/key-topics-foreign-service-institute\/foreign-language-training\/\">Foreign Language Institute<\/a> places Russian in Category III of its language difficulty ranking. That means that a typical speaker of English will need 44 weeks or 1,100 hours to reach professional working proficiency in the language.<\/li>\n<li>Despite spanning vast territories, Russian does not have significant <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/russian-regional-accents\/\">dialectal variation<\/a> due to, among other causes, mass migration (sometimes forced!), and centralized educational, publishing, and broadcasting standards. In other words, while regional vocabulary and pronunciation quirks do exist, it is much harder to pin a person speaking Russian to a specific geographic area than one might expect.<\/li>\n<li>The language is codified by the V.V. Vinogradov <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Russian_Language_Institute\">Russian Language Institute<\/a> of the Russian Academy of Sciences (<strong>\u0418\u043d\u0441\u0442\u0438\u0442\u0443\u0301\u0442 \u0440\u0443\u0301\u0441\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e \u044f\u0437\u044b\u043a\u0430\u0301 \u0438\u0301\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0438 \u0412. \u0412. \u0412\u0438\u043d\u043e\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0434\u043e\u0432\u0430 \u0420\u0410\u041d<\/strong>), based in Moscow.
