Russians \u2013 like most people that live in geographical regions where the longest season of the year is \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0438\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [winter] \u2013 can\u2019t afford \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u043d\u0435\u0431\u0440\u0435\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u043c: <\/strong>\u0441\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043d\u0446\u0435\u043c <\/strong>\u0438 <\/strong>\u0442\u0435\u043f\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u00bb <\/strong>[impfv.<\/em> to neglect (also: to scorn; disdain; disregard; ignore) <\/em>the summer: the sun and the warmth] considering how brief it is. It is over even before you\u2019ve had enough time to dust off your bikini\/bathing shorts! If we managed \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u0433\u043e\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u0445\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0448\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u044c\u043a\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [pfv.<\/em> to get sunburned properly (also: thoroughly)<\/em>], that is. When feeling torn as to what to do: stay inside \u00ab<\/strong>\u0438 <\/strong>\u0447\u0438\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [and impfv.<\/em> read] or go outside \u2013 for example, \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong>\u043f\u043b\u044f\u0436\u00bb<\/strong> [to the beach] \u2013 \u00ab<\/strong>\u0438 <\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u0433\u043e\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [and impfv.<\/em> to sun-bathe (in this sense the verb is used only in impfv.)<\/em>], why not combine the two? If you\u2019re like any other \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0435\u0432\u0435\u0440\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u043d <\/strong>\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0438 <\/strong>\u0441\u0435\u0432\u0435\u0440\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u0430\u00bb <\/strong>[northerner (male and female)<\/em>], then your biggest concern with \u00ab<\/strong>\u0447\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434 <\/strong>\u0441\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043d\u0446\u0435\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [reading under the sun] is that \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u0440 <\/strong>\u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0442 <\/strong>\u043d\u0435\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u044b\u043c\u00bb <\/strong>[the suntan will become uneven]. But that\u2019s not a good enough reason as to not give it a try, right?<\/p>\n

What does all of this have to do \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441 <\/strong>\u0432\u043e\u0441\u044c\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0439 <\/strong>\u0433\u043b\u0430\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [with the eight chapter] \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u041c\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0435 <\/strong>\u0438 <\/strong>\u041c\u0430\u0440\u0433\u0430\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [in \u201cMaster and Margarita\u201d]? Well, not much \u2013 except that I myself read it earlier while I was \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong>\u043f\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u0436\u0435\u00bb <\/strong>[at (lit.: on) <\/em>the beach] trying \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u0433\u043e\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [pfv.<\/em> to get (or become)<\/em> sunburned]. The good thing about bringing a Russian book with you to the beach \u2013 if this beach happens to be somewhere in Russia (why not pretend that we\u2019re all currently soaking up the sun \u00ab<\/strong><\/em>\u043d\u0430 <\/em><\/strong>\u0411\u0430\u0439\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0435<\/a>\u00bb<\/em><\/strong> [at Lake Baikal<\/a>]?)<\/em> \u2013 is that you can ask native speakers around you to explain difficult words that you do not understand. Let\u2019s use a word from chapter 8, entitled \u00ab<\/strong>\u041f\u043e\u0435\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u043a <\/strong>\u043c\u0435<\/span>\u0436\u0434\u0443 <\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0444\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043e\u0440\u043e\u043c <\/strong>\u0438 <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u044d<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u043c\u00bb <\/strong>[The\/A Duel between the Professor and the Poet], to illustrate how helpful Russians can be while at the beach. And not asking it out loud \u2013 even more so because you left your \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [dictionary] at home \u2013 will not get you anywhere. So how do you ask? You might want to try any one of these phrases:<\/p>\n

This is for being a little bit more specific: \u00ab<\/strong>\u041f\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435, <\/strong>\u0432\u044b <\/strong>\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u0435\u0442\u0435 <\/strong>\u043e\u0442\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong>\u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u043d <\/strong>\u0432\u043e\u043f\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0441?\u00bb<\/strong> [Excuse me (lit.: forgive me)<\/em>, can you pfv.<\/em> answer one question?]<\/p>\n

Now that you\u2019ve asked the question \u2013 any of the five suggested above should do the trick and get the attention of the native speaker of Russian \u2013 you must concentrate yourself even more for now comes the \u00ab<\/strong>\u043e\u0442\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [answer]! Don\u2019t be ashamed to say \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0432\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435, <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0443\u0439\u0441\u0442\u0430!\u00bb <\/strong>[repeat, please!] or \u00ab\u0433\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435 \u044f<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u043e \u0438 \u043c\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u043b\u0435\u043d\u043d\u043e, \u043f\u043e\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0443\u0439\u0441\u0442\u0430!\u00bb <\/strong>[speak clearly and slowly, please!] if you do not understand what the person\u2019s \u00ab<\/strong>\u043e\u0442\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [answer] was. But first what they say might not be more difficult than the following (and forgive me, but these examples are all positive \u2013 for in my world Russians are a helpful people)<\/em>:<\/p>\n

The most obvious: \u00ab<\/strong>\u0414\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Yes].<\/p>\n

And also rather obvious: \u00ab<\/strong>\u0427\u0442\u043e?\u00bb<\/strong> [What?]<\/p>\n

The polite answer: \u00ab<\/strong>\u0421\u043b\u0443<\/span>\u0448\u0430\u044e\u00bb<\/strong> [I\u2019m listening].<\/p>\n

An even more polite \u2013 so polite it is sometimes used ironically \u2013 answer: \u00ab<\/strong>\u0427\u0435\u043c <\/strong>\u043c\u043e\u0433\u0443<\/span> <\/strong>\u0431\u044b\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0437\u0435\u043d\/<\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0437\u043d\u0430?\u00bb <\/strong>[How can I be of help (lit.: with what can I be useful?)<\/em>]<\/p>\n

Also very polite or a little bit ironic: \u00ab\u042f \u043a \u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0438\u043c \u0443\u0441\u043b\u0443<\/span>\u0433\u0430\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [I\u2019m at your service].<\/p>\n

If the addressee is not sure that it is he or she you\u2019re addressing, the response may be: \u00ab<\/strong>\u0412\u044b <\/strong>\u043c\u0435\u043d\u044f<\/span>?\u00bb<\/strong> [Are you talking to me? (lit.: You me?)<\/em>]<\/p>\n

Now that you\u2019ve got both the native speaker\u2019s attention as well as her or his willingness to help, it is high time to ask what it is you\u2019re wondering about:<\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/strong>\u0427\u0442\u043e <\/strong>\u0437\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u0438\u0442 \u201c<\/em><\/strong>\u043f\u0443\u043d\u0446\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0430\u044f <\/em><\/strong>\u0431\u0430<\/span>\u0439\u043a\u0430\u201d<\/em>?\u00bb<\/strong> [What does \u2018crimson colored flannel\u2019<\/em> mean?]<\/p>\n

To such a question you might receive many answers and varied explanations. You might hear the very heart-wrenching:<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u042f \u043d\u0435 \u0437\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u044e\u00bb<\/strong> [I don\u2019t know].<\/p>\n

Or the equally disappointing: \u00ab<\/strong>\u041d\u0435 <\/strong>\u043c\u043e\u0433\u0443<\/span> <\/strong>\u0441\u043a\u0430\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [I can\u2019t tell you].<\/p>\n

But you might also get lucky and happen to ask a person who is not only very helpful and willing to help, but also rather good at explaining Russian words in Russian. Of course, if you\u2019re going to ask about every word that you come across in chapter 8 of \u201cMaster & Margarita\u201d \u2013 you\u2019ll probably be at the beach\u00a0long after sunset! But then again, that\u2019s the time for \u00ab<\/strong>\u0448\u0430\u0448\u043b\u044b\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [pl.<\/em> shashlik; shish kebab]! Happy sun-bathing and happy reading and happy bothering the native speakers with all your most annoying questions on grammar and vocabulary, everyone!
