\u0420\u0430\u0431\u043e\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c, to work, is one of the of first verbs one learns in Russian. It very useful in its primary sense, but it also has some interesting “relatives” \u2014 derivative verbs that have a slightly different meaning. This post will look at five of them, given in pairs of imperfective and perfective.<\/p>\n

The prefix \u043f\u043e\u0434- means “under” and can sometimes mean “a little bit” (\u043f\u043e\u0434\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0441\u0438\u0442\u044c<\/strong> \u2014 to touch up with paint) or “to do something along with someone” (\u043f\u043e\u0434\u043f\u0435\u0432\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> \u2014 to sing along). \u041f\u043e\u0434\u0440\u0430\u0431\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044b\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> means “to have a side job\/gig” and may be followed by a noun in the instrumental case to show the occupation.<\/p>\n

\u0417\u0430\u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e\u0301\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> means “to earn” or “gain.” It can be followed by nouns in the accusative case to say what is earned, such as \u0434\u0435\u0301\u043d\u044c\u0433\u0438<\/strong> (money), and \u043d\u0430 + a noun in the accusative to say what the thing earned will be used for, such as \u0437\u0430\u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e\u0301\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u0436\u0438\u0437\u043d\u044c<\/strong> (to make a living) or \u0437\u0430\u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e\u0301\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u043a\u0432\u0430\u0440\u0442\u0438\u0301\u0440\u0443<\/strong> (to earn enough to buy a flat\/apartment\/condo).<\/p>\n

The related noun is \u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e\u0301\u0442\u043a\u0430<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

You might remember the prefix \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435- in the sense of “too much.” This applies here, too, when \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e\u0301\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> means “to overwork.” However, I would like to look at a different, more interesting sense of this word.<\/p>\n

\u041f\u0435\u0440\u0435- can also mean “to do over.” In this sense, \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0440\u0430\u0431\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044b\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> can mean something like “process” or “convert” when we talk about raw materials or “recycle” if we talk about waste.<\/p>\n
