In Part I<\/a> of this post, we looked at some concepts that come up in the Russian media to talk about the government and society. Today, we’ll look at three additional words that you will often see in Russian-language sources.<\/p>\n

\u041e\u0301\u0431\u0449\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e translates as “society.” You can see this word in such combinations as “\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0436\u0434\u0430\u043d\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0435 \u043e\u0431\u0449\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e” (civil society<\/a>, or one where people are engaged in governing their community) or “\u0432\u044b\u0441\u0448\u0435\u0435 \u043e\u0431\u0449\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e” (high society).<\/p>\n

The related adjective is \u043e\u0431\u0449\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439. It is often translated as public, but this does not necessarily indicate the form of ownership. \u041e\u0431\u0449\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 simply refers to something that is used or accessed by the public, like \u043e\u0431\u0449\u0435\u0301\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0442\u0443\u0430\u043b\u0435\u0301\u0442<\/strong> (public restroom\/washroom\/toilet).<\/p>\n

4. \u0411\u044e\u0434\u0436\u0435\u0301\u0442\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/h2>\n

\u0411\u044e\u0434\u0436\u0435\u0301\u0442<\/strong> is, of course, a budget. \u0411\u044e\u0434\u0436\u0435\u0301\u0442\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong> are people who are paid by the government from the official budget of the country or local community. In other words, \u0431\u044e\u0434\u0436\u0435\u0301\u0442\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong> are public-sector employees. So, are public officials, such as members of parliament (\u0434\u0435\u043f\u0443\u0442\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044b<\/strong>) considered \u0431\u044e\u0434\u0436\u0435\u0301\u0442\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong>? Technically, they are, but in reality this word refers to lower-paid employees working at state-run institutions, such as public school teachers (\u0443\u0447\u0438\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044f\u0301<\/strong>) or physicians (\u0432\u0440\u0430\u0447\u0438\u0301<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

5. \u0421\u0438\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0438\u043a\u0438\u0301<\/h2>\n

The word \u0441\u0438\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0438\u043a\u0438\u0301<\/strong> (singular \u0441\u0438\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0438\u0301\u043a<\/strong>) comes from the word \u0441\u0438\u0301\u043b\u0430<\/strong>, force. Law enforcement, military, security, and intelligence agencies are sometimes called \u0441\u0438\u043b\u043e\u0432\u044b\u0301\u0435 \u0432\u0435\u0301\u0434\u043e\u043c\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0430<\/strong> in Russian. \u0421\u0438\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0438\u0301\u043a<\/strong> is a person who works for one of these agencies, so someone from law enforcement (\u043f\u0440\u0430\u0432\u043e\u043e\u0445\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u043e\u0301\u0440\u0433\u0430\u043d\u044b<\/strong>), broadly defined. Sometimes Russian media sources will contrast \u0441\u0438\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0438\u043a\u0438\u0301<\/strong> with \u043b\u0438\u0431\u0435\u0440\u0430\u0301\u043b\u044b<\/strong> (classical, free-market liberals<\/a>) as the two warring factions in the Russian government.<\/p>\n
