That document is featured further down. \u041f\u0430\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442, however, is closer to a national ID card. To distinguish it from the &#8220;international&#8221; passport, it is sometimes called <strong>\u043e\u0431\u0449\u0435\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0436\u0434\u0430\u0301\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u043f\u0430\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442<\/strong> or <strong>\u0432\u043d\u0443\u0301\u0442\u0440\u0435\u043d\u043d\u0438\u0439 \u043f\u0430\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the tsarist and Soviet era, domestic passports were used to restrict freedom of movement, for example, for peasants, who could not move out of their village without having the proper authorization. You only need this document if you plan to go abroad. It is issued by a registry\/vital records office (<strong>\u0417\u0410\u0413\u0421<\/strong>, which stands for but is rarely spelled out as &#8220;<strong>\u0437\u0430\u0301\u043f\u0438\u0441\u044c \u0430\u0301\u043a\u0442\u043e\u0432 \u0433\u0440\u0430\u0436\u0434\u0430\u0301\u043d\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e \u0441\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e\u044f\u0301\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/strong>,&#8221; literally &#8220;a record of civil state acts&#8221;) based on the initial medical birth certificate granted by the birth hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Birth certificates issued in republics of the former USSR were bilingual in Russian and the local language. Nowadays, Russian birth certificates are printed on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stamped_paper\">stamped<\/a>\/watermarked paper (<strong>\u0433\u0435\u0301\u0440\u0431\u043e\u0432\u0430\u044f \u0431\u0443\u043c\u0430\u0301\u0433\u0430<\/strong>). For children under the age of 14, a birth certificate is the main form of ID. Even for adults, birth certificates are important, for example for inheritance purposes. Technically, children get this number once their birth certificate is issued. In any case, people need to have one when they start their first job. It is used throughout their life to keep track of the pension\/social security contributions deducted from their pay and, eventually, to calculate the size of their pension.<\/p>\n<p>Our American readers will recognize that this system is similar to how a US social security number works. However, in Russia, while this number is sometimes used for some state\/official purposes, your internal passport (ID) number is what is used for taking out a loan, applying for other documents, etc. Up until 2019, \u0421\u041d\u0418\u041b\u0421 was a physical laminated card you had to apply for. The cards are still valid but are no longer issued. All records are now electronic, and you can get a physical printout if you need one.<\/p>\n<h2>5. \u041f\u043e\u0301\u043b\u0438\u0441 \u041e\u041c\u0421<\/h2>\n<p>\u041e\u041c\u0421 stands for <strong>\u043e\u0431\u044f\u0437\u0430\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0435 \u043c\u0435\u0434\u0438\u0446\u0438\u0301\u043d\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0435 \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0445\u043e\u0432\u0301\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong> (mandatory health insurance), so <strong>\u043f\u043e\u0301\u043b\u0438\u0441 \u041e\u041c\u0421<\/strong> is your health insurance card (literally, &#8220;policy&#8221;). This is a plastic card that allows you to receive medical services.<\/p>\n<p>Healthcare in Russia is paid for through taxes and is independent of your employer, although some employers may offer additional coverage as an extra benefit (<strong>\u0414\u041c\u0421, \u0434\u043e\u0431\u0440\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0301\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0435 \u043c\u0435\u0434\u0438\u0446\u0438\u0301\u043d\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0435 \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0445\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0301\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong>\u2014optional health insurance). The insurance cards themselves are issued by private insurers, and you can pick which one you get your card from.<\/p>\n<p>How does it work where you live? What is indispensable?
