Instead, I prefer <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [dumplings] to any <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u043f\u0435\u0447\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [baked goods] and not just any dumplings, but only <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0438\u0448\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [cherry-filled dumplings]! After all, there are so many different fillings for <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> &#8211; with <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0442\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0433\u00bb<\/strong> [farmer\u2019s cheese], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0435\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [liver], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0430\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [cabbage], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u0431\u043b\u043e\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [apples], etc. Pretty much anything that can be minced and stuffed inside a rolled-out <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [dough] can be used for <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438\u00bb.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As the name implies, the only way to cook this delicious dish is to <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0432\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to boil]. <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0412<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [the process of cooking in boiling liquid or steam] sounds so simple. Yet <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0412.<\/strong><strong>\u0412. <\/strong><strong>\u041f\u043e\u0445\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u0431\u043a\u0438\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> [V.V. Pohlebkin], a historian widely known for his books about history, traditions, and ways of cooking Russian dishes, devoted 20 pages of dense print to the process in his <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0422<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0439\u043d\u044b <\/strong><strong>\u0445\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0448\u0435\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0445\u043d\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [Secrets of Good Cooking].<\/p>\n<p>I personally think that not only the culinary process, but the word <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to boil] deserves a much closer linguistic scrutiny. For one, it\u2019s <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0438\u0441\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [an original Russian word] derived from an old Slavic noun <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0430\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [tar].<\/p>\n<p>Then there are lots of great <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0431\u0438\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u044b\u0440\u0430\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [everyday expressions] and <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u0441\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0438\u0446\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [proverbs] that use this verb.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the other day I stayed up well past midnight watching a movie and the next morning <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0431\u044b\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0430\u043a <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0430\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [I felt very tired, lit: I felt as if I was boiled]. <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041c\u0443\u0436 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u043b\u043e\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0432\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0444\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [my husband offered to make coffee], but since I don\u2019t like it <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0430\u0432\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0447\u0430\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [I made tea]. <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043f\u043a\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0430\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [strong brew] helped somewhat, but for the rest of the morning I felt as if <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0430\u0448\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [my head wasn\u2019t screwed on the right way].<\/p>\n<p>By the way, the word <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0430\u0448\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> is just one of the very informal and slightly disparaging alternatives to the word <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0433\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [head]. Others includes <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u043e\u0442\u0435\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [kettle] as in an approving <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0443 <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u043e\u0442\u0435\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043a <\/strong><strong>\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [she\u2019s quick on the uptake; lit: her kettle is cooking] and <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0439\u043d\u0438\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [tea kettle] as in <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0430\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0439\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [to hit one on the head]. If you every read any of the \u201cFor Dummies\u201d books, you might find it interesting that in Russia these books are called <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0414\u043b\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0439\u043d\u0438\u043a\u043e\u0432\u00bb.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0435\u0440\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u043c\u0441\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043a <\/strong><strong>\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0438\u043c <\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0430\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [let\u2019s get back to our subject]. In addition to <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0443\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0438 <\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u0432\u043e\u0449\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [soup and vegetables], you can <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [make porridge], making you a <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0430\u0448\u0435\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [porridge-maker] or <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [brew beer], in which case you become <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0438\u0432\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [brewer]. And don\u2019t you look down on porridge-makers either. A good <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0430\u0448\u0435\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> is hard to find (just ask any of us who attended Russian preschools with their seemingly constant smell of <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0433\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u0448\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [burnt cream of wheat].<\/p>\n<p>Do you know the story of a stone soup? Well, in its Russian version the soup is replaced with porridge and a stone &#8211; with an axe but the message stays the same <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0447\u0438\u0432\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0447\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043a <\/strong><strong>\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0438\u0437 <\/strong><strong>\u0442\u043e\u043f\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u0435\u0442 <\/strong><strong>\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0443 <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0432\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [a resourceful person can make porridge out of an axe].<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t get <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0432\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> confused with <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0430\u0432\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> either.
