\u00ab<\/strong>\u0414\u0430, <\/strong>\u0434\u0430, <\/strong>\u0437\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u044e, <\/strong>\u0437\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u044e\u00bb<\/strong> [yes, yes, I know, I know] \u2013 it has been almost two months since we all started reading \u00ab<\/strong>\u041c\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0435\u0440 <\/strong>\u0438 <\/strong>\u041c\u0430\u0440\u0433\u0430\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [\u201cMaster & Margarita\u201d] together and we haven\u2019t made it further than chapter ten. \u00ab<\/strong>\u0427\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043d\u043e <\/strong>\u0433\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0440\u044f<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [honestly speaking] I think we’re just going to keep reading this novel and writing a post about a chapter (or like in today’s post: TWO chapters, because one of them is really short) <\/em>every week until we finish it because in every chapter there\u2019s something interesting. By now I think it\u2019s clear to all of us that we can find some little detail in every chapter \u2013 or in some cases, too many and too big details! \u2013 to focus on that\u2019ll not only help us understand what \u00ab<\/strong>\u0448\u0435\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u0440 <\/strong>\u0411\u0443\u043b\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u043a\u043e\u0432\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Bulgakov\u2019s masterpiece] is about, but also a little bit more about the Russian language. Today we\u2019re covering mainly \u00ab<\/strong>\u0433\u043b\u0430\u0432\u0430<\/span> 10 (<\/strong>\u0434\u0435\u0441\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u044f): <\/strong>\u0412\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0438 <\/strong>\u0438\u0437 <\/strong>\u042f<\/span><\/strong>\u043b\u0442\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [chapter 10: News from Yalta], but also \u00ab<\/strong>\u0433\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0430 11 (<\/strong>\u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0430\u0434\u0446\u0430\u0442\u0430\u044f): <\/strong>\u0420\u0430\u0437\u0434\u0432\u043e\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 <\/strong>\u0418\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [chapter 11: The \u2018Splitting\u2019<\/em> of Ivan]. In chapter 10 we find ourselves at the \u00ab<\/strong>\u0412\u0430\u0440\u044c\u0435\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u00bb <\/strong>[Variety Theater], located \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong>\u0442\u043e\u0439 <\/strong>\u0436\u0435 <\/strong>\u0421\u0430\u0434\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u0439 (<\/strong>\u0443<\/span><\/strong>\u043b\u0438\u0446\u0435)\u00bb<\/strong> [also on Savodaya (Garden)<\/em> Street], where its financial director \u00ab<\/strong>\u0420\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> \u00a0[Rimsky] and administrator \u00ab<\/strong>\u0412\u0430\u0440\u0435\u043d\u0443<\/span>\u0445\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Varenukha] are about to receive just what the title of the chapter is called: news from Yalta. Back in the 1930\u2019s \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong>\u0431\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u043e <\/strong>\u0438\u043d\u0442\u0435\u0440\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [there was no internet] and \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0438 <\/strong>\u0443 <\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e<\/span> <\/strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong>\u0431\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u043e <\/strong>\u0441\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0433\u043e <\/strong>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0435\u0444\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [nobody had a cellular phone] so it was not as easy it is now to get a message from \u00ab<\/strong>\u041a\u0440\u044b\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [the Crimea] to reach \u00ab<\/strong>\u041c\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [Moscow] instantly. We know that the director of the Variety Theater, \u00ab<\/strong>\u041b\u0438\u0445\u043e\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> [Likhodeev], has just been magically removed from Moscow to Yalta by Voland\u2019s \u00ab<\/strong>\u0448\u0430<\/span>\u0439\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [gang]. Now if this had happened right now, Likhodeev could\u2019ve just updated \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0432\u043e\u0439 <\/strong>\u0441\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u0441 <\/strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong>\u0444\u0435\u0439\u0441\u0431\u0443<\/span>\u043a\u0435\u00bb <\/strong>[updated his status on Facebook] to say something like \u00ab<\/strong>\u0412\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u043d\u0434 <\/strong>\u043c\u0435\u043d\u044f<\/span> <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0441\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u043b <\/strong>\u043d\u0435\u043f\u043e\u043d\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u044b\u043c <\/strong>\u043e<\/span><\/strong>\u0431\u0440\u0430\u0437\u043e\u043c <\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u042f<\/span><\/strong>\u043b\u0442\u0443!\u00bb<\/strong> [Voland has sent me in a strange way to Yalta!]. He could even have taken a picture of himself in Yalta with his phone and posted it on Facebook, just to prove to Rimsky and Varenukha that he was actually IN Yalta. But in the Soviet Union there was no Facebook, and smart phones had yet to be invented in the world at this point in history. So what did people in the 1930\u2019s do to communicate with other people in places far away? They sent each other telegrams! In this chapter, a woman brings the Variety Theater something called \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0445\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043d\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [\u2018super-lightning\u2019<\/em>]. This is the same thing as \u00ab<\/strong>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0435\u0433\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u043c\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [telegram]: made from the word \u00ab<\/strong>\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043d\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [lightning] with the prefix \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0445\u00bb<\/strong> which in this case means \u2018super\u2019<\/em> like in the word \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0445\u044a\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [supernatural]. When sending a telegram people in the olden days tended to leave out the words that they could so as to save space. These were usually those words that the reader would understand as implied. In Russian it is not that difficult to understand which words are left out, because Russian language\u2019s worst curse (for those of us trying to learn it at least!)<\/em> also turns out to be a huge blessing sometimes: \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0430\u0434\u0435\u0436\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [the cases]! Let\u2019s see if we can put back the \u2018missing\u2019 <\/em>words from the first telegram from Likhodeev in Yalta to his colleagues in Moscow:<\/p>\n

There is a reason as to why I didn\u2019t translate the Russian text above into English straight away. A lot of the forms of the words, like \u00ab<\/strong>\u042f<\/span><\/strong>\u043b\u0442\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> and \u00ab<\/strong>\u041c\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0432\u0443<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>, give away the meaning to the native speaker who would know that what is implied is really \u00ab<\/strong>\u0438\u0437 <\/strong>\u042f<\/span><\/strong>\u043b\u0442\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> and \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u041c\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0432\u0443<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>. And that\u2019s why the translation would have to be \u2018from Yalta\u2019<\/em> and \u2018to Moscow\u2019<\/em> \u2013 leaving out all the fun in the Russian original! Let\u2019s see if we can make sense out of this sentence. I\u2019ve placed the words I think are left out and implied in CAPITAL LETTERS, just to make it easier. If you don\u2019t agree with me, then let your opinion be heard!<\/p>\n

Because it would be physically impossible for Likhodeev \u2013 who just moments earlier made a phone call from his apartment to the Variety Theater \u2013 to suddenly be \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u042f<\/span><\/strong>\u043b\u0442\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [in Yalta], they don’t believe he is the one behind the telegram. Rimsky and Varenukha think it has been sent from a \u00ab<\/strong>\u041b\u0436\u0451<\/span>\u0434\u043c\u0438\u0442\u0440\u0438\u0439\u00bb <\/strong>[lit. \u2018False Dmitry\u2019<\/em>, but in modern Russian meaning anyone who is an impostor]. The next telegram Likhodeev sends to Varenukha and Rimsky in Moscow is shorter than the first, but not as cryptically composed:<\/p>\n

It is indeed too bad that the \u2018ancient\u2019<\/em> art form of writing and sending telegrams is not something a person has to master these days \u2013 not even in Russian! The genre is quite interesting, especially to someone who is not yet fluent but still trying to figure out what the \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0430\u0434\u0435\u0436\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [cases] mean and what they\u2019ll do to those innocent Russian words. In telegrams, the case will not only be visible in the form of the word itself, but also important to the whole meaning of it. Isn\u2019t that something to think about while you\u2019re making your way through chapter 10 of Master and Margarita?<\/p>\n

If telegrams are a genre of writing itself, then so is the famous act of \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0438\u0441\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u044f\u0432\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [to write an announcement; statement; application]. This is a very important thing to know how to do properly both in Russian language as well as if you\u2019re going to spend some time living in Russia. In Russia you\u2019d have to write a formal \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u044f\u0432\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [announcement; statement; application] for just about everything \u2013 Russians prefer to have everything documented and in writing on proper paper. Not very surprising then, that this is what we find \u00ab<\/strong>\u0418\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> [Ivan] doing in his room at the mental hospital in chapter 11: writing a \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u044f<\/span>\u0432\u043b\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0435 <\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u043c\u0438\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u044e\u00bb<\/strong> [report to the police (I\u2019m not sure if this is the proper English translation of the act, but that\u2019s what I think you could explain the formal process of reporting a crime to police)<\/em>] to let them know about the incident with professor Voland and his involvement in Berlioz\u2019 death. Writing a \u00ab\u0437\u0430\u044f\u0432\u043b\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb is not that difficult, and it sure isn\u2019t worth making it harder than it should be \u2013 especially considering that you have to do it so often in Russia! This is how it\u2019s done:<\/p>\n

First you answer the question \u00ab<\/strong>\u041a\u0443\u0434\u0430<\/span>?\u00bb<\/strong> [To where?] and put the person or the place in accusative case like this: \u00ab<\/strong>\u0412 <\/strong>\u043c\u0438\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u044e\u00bb<\/strong> [To the Police].<\/p>\n

Then you answer \u00ab<\/strong>\u041e\u0442 <\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e<\/span>?\u00bb<\/strong> [From whom?] and put your own name in the genitive case, just like Ivan did in his: \u00ab<\/strong>\u0427\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong>\u041c\u0430\u0441\u0441\u043e\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0430 <\/strong>\u0418\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong>\u041d\u0438\u043a\u043e\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u0438\u0447\u0430 <\/strong>\u0411\u0435\u0437\u0434\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u043d\u043e\u0433\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [From member of Massolit Ivan Nikolaevich Bezdomny].<\/p>\n

All of this is written in the right top corner of the paper \u2013 usually a blank, white paper without any lines is used. After this you write \u00ab<\/strong>\u0417\u0410\u042f\u0412\u041b\u0415<\/span>\u041d\u0418\u0415\u00bb<\/strong> in big letters in the middle of the paper.<\/p>\n

The finishing formality \u2013 before you go on and explain the reason behind why you\u2019re writing this in the first place \u2013 is usually: \u00ab<\/strong>\u041f\u0440\u043e\u0448\u0443<\/span>\u2026\u00bb<\/strong> [I ask\u2026]. And then you put everything that you want to ask for after that. Sometimes it seems silly in Russia to have to write a whole big paper like this when the actual request is only one sentence. Ivan\u2019s \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u044f\u0432\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> was a much more serious piece of work \u2013 so serious that he didn\u2019t go on to finish it but as a matter of fact ended up not caring as much about the whole incident anymore. Maybe that\u2019s what too many formalities will do to a person? Or maybe that\u2019s the work of\u2026 the devil, also known as Voland?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
