Friends play extremely important roles in our lives. Friendship in Russia means a lot and is appreciated. To be honored to be called a true friend, you need to do certain things. A close friend is almost a family member.<\/span><\/p>\n

We have already discussed the types of friendship (\u0434\u0440\u0443\u0301<\/span><\/span>\u0436\u0431\u0430)<\/em> in Russia in <\/span>this blog<\/a>. Today I want to talk about the concepts of “true friend”, \u201cbest friend\u201d, and “close friend”. What makes these people different from “just friends”?<\/span><\/p>\n

A <\/span>true friend<\/span> <\/i>(\u043d\u0430\u0441\u0442\u043e\u044f\u0301<\/em>\u0449\u0438\u0439 \u0434\u0440\u0443\u0433)<\/i> will keep a promise<\/span> <\/i>(\u0441\u0434\u0435\u0301<\/em>\u0440\u0436\u0438\u0442 \u0441\u043b\u043e\u0301<\/em><\/span>\u0432\u043e\/\u043e\u0431\u0435\u0449\u0430\u0301<\/em>\u043d\u0438\u0435)<\/i>, <\/span>support you<\/span> (<\/i><\/span>\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0434\u0435\u0301<\/em>\u0440\u0436\u0438\u0442 \u0442\u0435\u0431\u044f)<\/i>, help in difficult times <\/span>(\u043f\u043e\u043c\u043e\u0301<\/em><\/span>\u0436\u0435\u0442 \u0432 \u0442\u0440\u0443\u0301<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>\u0434\u043d\u0443\u044e \u043c\u0438\u043d\u0443\u0301<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>\u0442\u0443)<\/i>, <\/span>never betray<\/span> <\/i>(\u043d\u0438\u043a\u043e\u0433\u0434\u0430\u0301<\/em> \u043d\u0435 \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0430\u0301<\/em>\u0441\u0442)<\/i>, and always <\/span>find a minute <\/span>(\u043d\u0430\u0439\u0434\u0451\u0442 \u043c\u0438\u043d\u0443\u0301<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>\u0442\u0443)<\/i> to call<\/span> <\/i>(\u043f\u043e\u0437\u0432\u043e\u043d\u0438\u0301\u0442\u044c)<\/i> <\/i>you just <\/span>to <\/span>ask how you are doing<\/span> (\u0441\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0438\u0301\u0442\u044c, \u043a\u0430\u043a \u0442\u0432\u043e\u0438\u0301 \u0434\u0435\u043b\u0430\u0301<\/em>)<\/i>. The best friend <\/span>(\u043b\u0443\u0301<\/span><\/span><\/em>\u0447\u0448\u0438\u0439 \u0434\u0440\u0443\u0433) <\/i><\/span>is most likely the same person as your true friend. The difference between them is that a “true friend” is in an ideal friendship. If you can say that about yours, you are a lucky person.<\/span><\/p>\n

is very similar to English \u201cA man is known by the company he keeps\u201d. A person tends to be very similar in character to the people with whom he or she communicates and spends time.<\/p>\n

Once people recognize each other as friends, they become reliable <\/span>(\u043d\u0430\u0434\u0451\u0436\u043d\u044b\u0439)<\/i><\/span> and speak frankly (\u043e\u0442\u043a\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0301\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439)<\/em> for years to come, sharing their deepest feelings and discussing all aspects of their lives. Russians say they can visit their friends at 2 a.m. without prior notice, just to talk. Good friends always have time for a chat (\u043f\u043e\u0431\u043e\u043b\u0442\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c)<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

– I called my bestie <\/span>(<\/i><\/span>\u043b\u0443\u0301<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>\u0447\u0448\u0430\u044f \u043f\u043e\u0434\u0440\u0443\u0301<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>\u0433\u0430)<\/i> in the middle of the night to tell her I found a solution to her problem. We both were so happy!<\/span><\/p>\n

There is not much personal space and privacy between such people. Traditionally in Russia, it is customary to invite friends \u201c\u043d\u0430 \u0447\u0430\u0439\u201d (to have some tea). Usually, the conversations during tea (coffee, wine, etc.) drinking will last for hours. Your friend will always be there for you.<\/p>\n

Close friends <\/span>(<\/i><\/span>\u0431\u043b\u0438\u0301\u0437\u043a\u0438\u0435 \u0434\u0440\u0443\u0437\u044c\u044f\u0301<\/em>)<\/i> always remember when your birthday is and know what you want as a gift. It is with these people that you want to share joy and sorrow <\/span>(\u0440\u0430\u0437\u0434\u0435\u043b\u0438\u0301\u0442\u044c \u0440\u0430\u0301<\/em>\u0434\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c \u0438 \u0433\u043e\u0301<\/em>\u0440\u0435)<\/i>. You can be sure they will understand you <\/span>(\u043f\u043e\u0439\u043c\u0443\u0301<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>\u0442 \u0442\u0435\u0431\u044f\u0301<\/em>)<\/i>. Russians separate friendship and acquaintance. They believe that it is impossible to have many close friends. So most people have one or several of them, calling others they have a nice time with <\/span>\u201c<\/i><\/span>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u044f\u0301<\/em>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c<\/i>\u201c<\/i><\/span>, \u201c<\/i><\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0301<\/em>\u0440\u0438\u0449<\/i>\u201c<\/i><\/span>, or <\/span>\u201c<\/i><\/span>\u0437\u043d\u0430\u043a\u043e\u0301<\/em>\u043c\u044b\u0439<\/i>\u201c<\/i><\/span>.<\/p>\n
