It is the official school start date. Pupils on this day return to schools (\u0448\u043a\u043e\u0301<\/span><\/i>\u043b\u044b<\/em>), colleges (\u043a\u043e\u0301<\/span><\/i>\u043b\u043b\u0435\u0434\u0436\u0438<\/em>), and universities (\u0443\u043d\u0438\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0441\u0438\u0442\u0435\u0301<\/i>\u0442\u044b<\/em>). Today we will talk about a typical Russian school. “\u0428\u043a\u043e\u0301<\/span>\u043b\u0430<\/strong>” (noun, feminine) sounds a bit similar to the English \u201cschool\u201d.<\/p>\n

Both terms are derived from the Greek “\u03c3\u03c7\u03bf\u03bb\u03ae” (schol\u0113). But the word came to the Russian language through the Polish “szko\u0142a” (schola).<\/p>\n

\u042f \u0442\u0430\u043a \u0440\u0430\u0301\u0434\u0430 \u0432\u0435\u0440\u043d\u0443\u0301<\/span><\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u0432 \u0448\u043a\u043e\u0301<\/span><\/i>\u043b\u0443<\/em>!<\/strong> – I am so excited to go back to school!<\/p>\n

School in Russia is an institution for general (\u043e\u0301<\/span><\/i><\/em>\u0431\u0449\u0435\u0435<\/em>) education (\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430\u0437\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0301<\/i>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/em>). It also can be applied to additional educational institutions as music (\u043c\u0443\u0301<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u0437\u044b\u043a\u0430<\/em>), art (\u0438\u0441\u043a\u0443\u0301<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u0441\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/em>), sports (\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442<\/em>) schools with the focus on developing children’s creative potential (\u0442\u0432\u043e\u0301<\/span><\/i>\u0440\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u043f\u043e\u0442\u0435\u043d\u0446\u0438\u0430\u0301<\/i>\u043b<\/em>).<\/p>\n

The full program (\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0301<\/i>\u043c\u043c\u0430<\/em>) consists of eleven years of schooling. There are three levels in general education: elementary school (\u043d\u0430\u0447\u0430\u0301<\/i>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0448\u043a\u043e\u0301<\/span><\/i>\u043b\u0430<\/em>) – grades (\u043a\u043b\u0430\u0301<\/i>\u0441\u0441\u044b<\/em>) 1 to 4, middle school (\u0441\u0440\u0435\u0301<\/i>\u0434\u043d\u044f\u044f \u0448\u043a\u043e\u0301<\/span><\/i>\u043b\u0430<\/em>) – grades 5 to 9, and high school (\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0301<\/i>\u0440\u0448\u0438\u0435 \u043a\u043b\u0430\u0301<\/i>\u0441\u0441\u044b<\/em>) – grades 10 and 11.<\/p>\n

\u041d\u0430\u0447\u0430\u0301\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0448\u043a\u043e\u0301<\/span><\/i>\u043b\u0430<\/em> \u043d\u0430\u0445\u043e\u0301<\/span>\u0434\u0438\u0442\u0441\u044f \u043d\u0430 \u043f\u0435\u0301\u0440\u0432\u043e\u043c \u044d\u0442\u0430\u0436\u0435\u0301.<\/strong> – The elementary school is on the first floor.<\/p>\n

After the ninth, students (\u0443\u0447\u0435\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438\u0301<\/i><\/em>) may choose to continue schooling (\u0443\u0447\u0451\u0431\u0430 \u0432 \u0448\u043a\u043e\u0301<\/span><\/i>\u043b\u0435<\/em>), go to college, or get a job. At the end of the last grade, students take exams (\u044d\u043a\u0437\u0430\u0301<\/i>\u043c\u0435\u043d\u044b<\/em>) in some subjects (\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u043c\u0435\u0301<\/i>\u0442\u044b<\/em>). Students of each grade are divided into classes<\/a> (\u043a\u043b\u0430\u0301<\/i>\u0441\u0441\u044b<\/em>). Each class usually has up to 30 pupils (\u0443\u0447\u0435\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438\u0301<\/i><\/em>) who always go to lessons (\u0443\u0440\u043e\u0301<\/span><\/i>\u043a\u0438<\/em>) together throughout the 11 years. Each class is named with a letter, for example, 2 “B”.<\/p>\n

Private schools (\u0447\u0430\u0301<\/i>\u0441\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0448\u043a\u043e\u0301<\/span><\/i>\u043b\u044b<\/em>) are uncommon in Russia. They emphasize learning some specific skills (\u043d\u0430\u0301<\/i>\u0432\u044b\u043a\u0438<\/em>) in foreign languages (\u0438\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0301<\/i>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u044f\u0437\u044b\u043a\u0438\u0301<\/i><\/em>), sciences (\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0435\u0301<\/i>\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u043d\u0430\u0443\u0301<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u043a\u0438<\/em>), physics (\u0444\u0438\u0301<\/i>\u0437\u0438\u043a\u0430<\/em>) and mathematics (\u043c\u0430\u0442\u0435\u043c\u0430\u0301<\/i>\u0442\u0438\u043a\u0430<\/em>), etc. In government-funded specialized schools – lyceums (\u043b\u0438\u0446\u0435\u0301<\/i>\u0438<\/em>) and gymnasiums (\u0433\u0438\u043c\u043d\u0430\u0301<\/i>\u0437\u0438\u0438<\/em>) – in-depth study of individual subjects is also provided.<\/p>\n
