In this chapter an enigmatic <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0433\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [<em>mas.<\/em> guest] comes into the room of <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0418\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d <\/strong><strong>\u0411\u0435\u0437\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u043d\u044b\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [Ivan <em>\u2018Homeless\u2019<\/em>] in the mental hospital in the middle of the night \u2013 through the balcony. During his visit he asks about how Ivan came to be there as well as manages to tell the story of his life, all without ever mentioning his own name. Not even once! The stranger is fascinated with how Ivan\u2019s arrival to the mental hospital is tightly linked to Pontius Pilate \u2013 a historical figure about whom he himself once wrote an entire novel. After receiving this piece of curious information Ivan asks the mysterious man: <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0412\u044b \u2013 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0438\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c?\u00bb <\/strong>[\u201dAre you a writer?\u201d]. But he almost corrects him: <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u042f \u2013 <\/strong><strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0435\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [\u201cI am a master\u201d]. He points at this hat which has the letter <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041c\u00bb<\/strong> sown onto it in yellow silk and comments: <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0432\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0443\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0435<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u043d\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [\u201cShe sew it for me with her own hands\u201d]. Who is <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [she]? The Master does not mention her name while telling Ivan the whole story about how they met. But we all can guess that she must be the <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041c\u0430\u0440\u0433\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Margarita] from the book\u2019s title, right? Chapter 12 might just as well be called <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u042f\u0432\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0433\u0435\u0440\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [\u201cThe appearance of the Hero and the Heroine\u201d] for from this chapter on she comes to play an equally important part to the story as he does \u2013 perhaps an even greater one! In my strictly personal opinion, the title of the novel might just as well have been <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041c\u0430\u0440\u0433\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u041c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0435\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [\u201cMargarita and The Master\u201d] instead of the other way around. Chapter 12 is only our first introduction to the novel\u2019s two <em>\u2018main\u2019<\/em> characters, but the further we reach in their stories and their involvement in the plot, the more will we understand that it is not entirely clear who of these two are really <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0433\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [main, chief, principal; head <em>(in mas. sing.)<\/em>] \u2013 or should I perhaps say <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0433\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u0430\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [the same adjective but in fem. sing]?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Chapter 12 is where the according to some scholars <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0444\u0430\u043d\u0442\u0430\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0440\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u00bb <\/strong>[fantastic\/fantasy novel] transforms from <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0435\u0430\u043b\u0438\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0440\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d <\/strong><strong>\u0441 <\/strong><strong>\u044d\u043b\u0435\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0442\u0430\u043c\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0444\u0430\u043d\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0438\u043a\u0438\u00bb <\/strong>[a realistic novel with elements of fantasy] into <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043b\u044e\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0440\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> [a love novel]. Or it might be more correct to call that aspect of the novel for <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0438\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0434\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043b\u044e\u0431\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [the history of one love] \u2013 what love is that, you might ask? Well, the love <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0436\u0434\u0443 <\/strong><strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0435\u0440\u043e\u043c <\/strong><strong>\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0434\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0430\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u0435\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0449\u0438\u043d\u043e\u0439\u00bb <\/strong>[between the Master and one married woman] <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0435\u0437 <\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [without a name]. We all realize that she\u2019s <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041c\u0430\u0440\u0433\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Margarita] \u2013 as we find out that their love came upon them like a thief on the street, according to what the Master told Ivan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since they are indeed a <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0437\u043d\u0430\u043c\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0438\u0437 <\/strong><strong>\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043b\u0438\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0430\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [famous couple from Russian literature], I thought to myself: \u201cWhy not finish this post with a quiz to see if you can pair some literary couples with the books that chronicle their love story?\u201d I had a bit of <strong>\u00ab\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0437\u0438\u0441 \u0441 \u0444\u0430\u043d\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0438\u0435\u0439 \u0438 \u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u044f\u0442\u044c\u044e\u00bb<\/strong> [crisis with <em>(my)<\/em> fantasy and memory] while trying to come up with at least five couples \u2013 not all of them necessarily had a happy ending.
