Without it, they can only get to the rest of Russia by plane. Traveling by land from or to a region involves crossing the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_Union\">European Union<\/a> <span lang=\"ru-RU\">(<\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\"><i>\u0415\u0432\u0440\u043e\u043f<em>\u0435\u0301<\/em>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0421\u043e\u044e\u0301\u0437<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\">) <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">border <\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\">(<em>\u0433\u0440\u0430\u043d<i>\u0438\u0301<\/i>\u0446\u0430<\/em>)<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> twice, usually with Lithuania, but there are routes through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latvia\">Latvia<\/a> <span lang=\"ru-RU\">(<\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\"><i>\u041b<span lang=\"en-US\">\u0430\u0301<\/span>\u0442\u0432\u0438\u044f<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\">) <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">as well. Kaliningrad residents who are in transit through Lithuania&#8217;s territory on trains are issued a special travel document. Citizens of the Russian Federation not residing in the Kaliningrad region must have a valid Schengen visa <\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\">(<\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\"><i>\u0448\u0435\u043d\u0433<em>\u0435\u0301<\/em>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u0432<em>\u0438\u0301<\/em>\u0437\u0430<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\">)<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Most of its residents frequently travel to Europe <\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\">(<\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\"><i>\u0415\u0432\u0440<em><span lang=\"en-US\">\u043e\u0301<\/span><\/em>\u043f\u0430<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\">)<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">. They go to the EU on vacation, for shopping, and even for work. There are long lines at both border crossings on weekends and holidays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Due to its location on the coast of the Baltic Sea and in the very heart of Europe, tourism has become one of the priority means of the city&#8217;s development. There are 536 cultural (<em>\u043a\u0443\u043b\u044c\u0442<span lang=\"ru-RU\"><i><span lang=\"en-US\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u0443\u0301<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span>\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/em>) and historical (<em>\u0438\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0440<span lang=\"ru-RU\"><i>\u0438\u0301<\/i><\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439<\/em>) sites. Most of the foreign tourists visiting the Kaliningrad region are tourists from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Germany\">Germany<\/a> (<em>\u0413\u0435\u0440\u043c<span lang=\"en-US\"><i>\u0430\u0301<\/i><\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/em>). There are about a hundred hotels in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kaliningrad\">Kaliningrad<\/a> <span lang=\"ru-RU\">(<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>\u041a\u0430\u043b\u0438\u043d\u0438\u043d\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0434<\/i><\/span><i> <\/i><span lang=\"en-US\"> [kuh-leen-een-gr\u0430\u0301hd])<\/span>, many of which are considered the best in Russia. The Kaliningrad region&#8217;s old towns, where important European historical events took place, are the most popular. In 2020, due to restrictions on coronavirus, the demand for travel within Russia has increased. Russians who want to visit Europe, but do not have such an opportunity, come there because the city resembles a European one. It is also a chance to find and buy some imported goods not found in the main part of the country. The influx of travelers has exceeded expectations and continues to grow.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">At the end of World War II in 1945, the city became part of Russia. In 1946, the new city was renamed <\/span>Kaliningrad<span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0from its prior German (<\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\"><i>\u043d<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>\u0435\u043c<span lang=\"ru-RU\"><em>\u0435\u0301<\/em><\/span>\u0446\u043a<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\"><i>\u0438\u0439<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"ru-RU\">)<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> name of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/K\u00f6nigsberg\">K\u00f6nigsberg<\/a><span lang=\"en-US\">.
