A city that is “cut off” from the country<\/h2>\n

The <\/span>Kaliningrad region<\/a> or Kaliningrad Oblast'(<\/span>\u041a\u0430\u043b\u0438\u043d\u0438\u043d\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0434<\/i><\/span>\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u043e\u0301<\/span><\/em>\u0431\u043b\u0430\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/i><\/span>)<\/span> is a <\/span>semi-exclave<\/a> of Russia, not bordering <\/span>(<\/span>\u043d\u0435 \u0433\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0301<\/em>\u0447\u0430\u0449\u0438\u0439<\/i><\/span>)<\/span> on any of its other regions. When <\/span>Lithuania<\/a> (<\/span>\u041b\u0438\u0442\u0432\u0430\u0301<\/span><\/i><\/span>)<\/span> and <\/span>Belarus<\/a> (<\/span>\u0411\u0435\u043b\u0430\u0440\u0443\u0301<\/span><\/span><\/em>\u0441\u044c<\/i><\/span>) <\/span>achieved independence <\/span>(<\/span>\u043d\u0435\u0437\u0430\u0432\u0438\u0301<\/em>\u0441\u0438\u043c\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/i><\/span>)<\/span> from the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the region became completely separated <\/span>(<\/span>\u043e\u0442\u0434\u0435\u043b\u0451\u043d<\/i><\/span>) <\/span>from the main territory, stuck between Lithuania and <\/span>Poland<\/a> (<\/span>\u041f\u043e\u0301<\/span><\/em>\u043b\u044c\u0448\u0430<\/i><\/span>) <\/span>on the Baltic Sea <\/span>(<\/span>\u0411\u0430\u043b\u0442\u0438\u0301<\/em>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0435 \u043c\u043e\u0301<\/span><\/em>\u0440\u0435<\/i><\/span><\/a>)<\/span>. Therefore, before visiting relatives in other Russian cities, people often say: “I am going to Russia.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Every resident <\/span>(<\/span>\u0436\u0438\u0301<\/em>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c<\/i><\/span>) <\/span>has an external <\/span>(<\/span>international) passport <\/span>(<\/span>\u0437\u0430\u0433\u0440\u0430\u043d\u043f\u0430\u0301<\/span>\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442<\/i><\/span>)<\/span> (read more about it <\/span>here<\/a> and <\/span>here<\/a>). Without it, they can only get to the rest of Russia by plane. Traveling by land from or to a region involves crossing the <\/span>European Union<\/a> (<\/span>\u0415\u0432\u0440\u043e\u043f\u0435\u0301<\/em>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0421\u043e\u044e\u0301\u0437<\/i><\/span>) <\/span>border <\/span>(\u0433\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0301<\/i>\u0446\u0430<\/em>)<\/span> twice, usually with Lithuania, but there are routes through <\/span>Latvia<\/a> (<\/span>\u041b\u0430\u0301<\/span>\u0442\u0432\u0438\u044f<\/i><\/span>) <\/span>as well. Kaliningrad residents who are in transit through Lithuania’s territory on trains are issued a special travel document. Citizens of the Russian Federation not residing in the Kaliningrad region must have a valid Schengen visa <\/span>(<\/span>\u0448\u0435\u043d\u0433\u0435\u0301<\/em>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u0432\u0438\u0301<\/em>\u0437\u0430<\/i><\/span>)<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most of its residents frequently travel to Europe <\/span>(<\/span>\u0415\u0432\u0440\u043e\u0301<\/span><\/em>\u043f\u0430<\/i><\/span>)<\/span>. They go to the EU on vacation, for shopping, and even for work. There are long lines at both border crossings on weekends and holidays.<\/span><\/p>\n

Due to its location on the coast of the Baltic Sea and in the very heart of Europe, tourism has become one of the priority means of the city’s development. There are 536 cultural (\u043a\u0443\u043b\u044c\u0442\u0443\u0301<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span>\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/em>) and historical (\u0438\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0438\u0301<\/i><\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439<\/em>) sites. Most of the foreign tourists visiting the Kaliningrad region are tourists from Germany<\/a> (\u0413\u0435\u0440\u043c\u0430\u0301<\/i><\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/em>). There are about a hundred hotels in Kaliningrad<\/a> (<\/span>\u041a\u0430\u043b\u0438\u043d\u0438\u043d\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0434<\/i><\/span> <\/i> [kuh-leen-een-gr\u0430\u0301hd])<\/span>, many of which are considered the best in Russia. The Kaliningrad region’s old towns, where important European historical events took place, are the most popular. In 2020, due to restrictions on coronavirus, the demand for travel within Russia has increased. Russians who want to visit Europe, but do not have such an opportunity, come there because the city resembles a European one. It is also a chance to find and buy some imported goods not found in the main part of the country. The influx of travelers has exceeded expectations and continues to grow.<\/p>\n

At the end of World War II in 1945, the city became part of Russia. In 1946, the new city was renamed <\/span>Kaliningrad\u00a0from its prior German (<\/span>\u043d<\/i><\/span>\u0435\u043c\u0435\u0301<\/em><\/span>\u0446\u043a<\/i><\/span>\u0438\u0439<\/i><\/span>)<\/span> name of <\/span>K\u00f6nigsberg<\/a>. The region\u2019s German inhabitants were deported and been replaced by hundreds of thousands of Russian settlers. <\/span><\/p>\n
