As you know, <\/span>Valentine’s Day<\/i><\/span> (<\/span>\u0414\u0435\u043d\u044c \u0421\u0432\u044f\u0442\u043e\u0433\u043e \u0412\u0430\u043b\u0435\u043d\u0442\u0438\u043d\u0430<\/i><\/span>) is approaching. There will finally be an occasion to call those we love (<\/span>\u043b\u044e\u0431\u0438\u0442\u044c)<\/span> but rarely talk to. While some are looking forward to this holiday, others do not celebrate it for their personal reasons or principles. No matter what group of people you belong to, I hope you will have a fantastic February 14th.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since today I am in a cheerful mood, I have collected some funny popular phrases on love topic. Undoubtedly, humor differs from country to country<\/span>,<\/span> and sometimes it is not easy to understand it. However, <\/span>Jenya gives a great explanation<\/a> of the peculiarities of Russian humor.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Russia, in general, there are a lot of expressions related to crop production. Here are three examples of love and vegetables.<\/p>\n

Love has passed, tomatoes have withered – <\/span>\u041f\u0440\u043e\u0448\u043b\u0430 \u043b\u044e\u0431\u043e\u0432\u044c, \u0437\u0430\u0432\u044f\u043b\u0438 \u043f\u043e\u043c\u0438\u0434\u043e\u0440\u044b.<\/h2>\n

As you might guess, it<\/span> is a literal translation. This<\/span> actually means, “The love was a crush, but it passed quickly.” The <\/span>proverb is more about teens when they have a passion (\u0443\u0432\u043b\u0435\u0447\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0435\/<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/i><\/span>)<\/span> and quickly move on from liking one person to another.<\/p>\n

We can associate the withering of love <\/span>(<\/span>\u043b\u044e\u0431\u043e\u0432\u044c<\/i><\/span>) <\/span>and the withering of plants. Nonetheless, it is believed to be related to French decorative tomatoes <\/span>(<\/span>\u043f\u043e\u043c\u0438\u0434\u043e\u0440\u044b<\/i><\/span>)<\/span>. The young ladies in love were very fond of attaching a twig with a flower of this plant to the bodice. But when a lady stopped wearing it, it became clear that something had changed. This expression became popular after <\/span>Oleg Savostyanov wrote a poem with this phrase.<\/span><\/p>\n

Love is not a potato, you cannot throw it out the window – \u041b\u044e\u0431\u043e\u0432\u044c \u043d\u0435 \u043a\u0430\u0440\u0442\u043e\u0448\u043a\u0430, \u043d\u0435 \u0432\u044b\u0431\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0438\u0448\u044c \u0432 \u043e\u043a\u043e\u0448\u043a\u043e.<\/span><\/h2>\n

Precious love and a simple potato (<\/span>\u043a\u0430\u0440\u0442\u043e\u0432\u0435\u043b\u044c\/\u043a\u0430\u0440\u0442\u043e\u0448\u043a\u0430<\/i><\/span>) <\/span>are definitely different things. This is so obvious that such a comparison is even surprising. In fact, this phrase means exactly what it says – love, unlike potatoes, is something you cannot quickly get rid of.<\/p>\n

Although there is another Russian proverb that says exactly the opposite:<\/span><\/p>\n

“\u0421 \u0433\u043b\u0430\u0437 \u0434\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0439 \u2014 \u0438\u0437 \u0441\u0435\u0440\u0434\u0446\u0430 \u0432\u043e\u043d” <\/span>(“Far from eye, far from heart,” “Long absent, soon forgotten” ) <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

It means that love easily fades away if you do not see the object of love.<\/p>\n

Love-carrot – \u041b\u044e\u0431\u043e\u0432\u044c-\u043c\u043e\u0440\u043a\u043e\u0432\u044c.<\/h2>\n

Love is not a potato but a carrot (<\/span>\u043c\u043e\u0440\u043a\u043e\u0432\u044c<\/i><\/span>)<\/span>. Truly, it means absolutely nothing. It is just a sounding rhyme between the words “\u043b\u044e\u0431\u043e\u0432\u044c”, and “\u043c\u043e\u0440\u043a\u043e\u0432\u044c”. It is often used to speak ironically about romance (<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u043c\u0430\u043d\u0442\u0438\u043a\u0430<\/i><\/span>)<\/span>.<\/p>\n
