The Russian blog community is a fascinating world of general discussions, private reflections and random efforts to earn an extra ruble or two \u2013 in short, just like in all other blog communities around the world. In Russia there\u2019s still some ambivalence about what to exactly call this \u2018action\u2019<\/em> (once again we\u2019re back at the beloved subject of Russian verbs, and now for some more profound reflections, as I promised last week). Blogs are usually visible in many other media outlets in Russia, most of all in magazines and papers, for example \u00ab\u0420\u0443\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0440\u0435\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442\u0451\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> always reserves at least a whole section just for blog comments on some current affair. For a long time I didn\u2019t understand what the word \u00ab\u0416\u0416\u00bb <\/strong>meant, which I met often in different contexts, as I couldn\u2019t for all my life imagine what these two letters stood for. Later it was explained to me that it stood for \u00ab\u0436\u0438\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u0436\u0443\u0440\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u00bb<\/strong> [live journal] which is a straight translation of the most popular blogging site\u2019s English name into Russian \u2013 www.livejournal.ru<\/a>. But is there any verb for \u2018to blog\u2019<\/em> in Russian? Mostly when I heard Russians speak of this new action, they called it \u00ab\u0432\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/span> \u0434\u043d\u0435\u0432\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u043a \u043e\u043d-\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0439\u043d (\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0438 \u043f\u043e \u0438\u043d\u0442\u0435\u0440\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443)\u00bb <\/strong>[to keep a journal on-line (or on the internet)], it was only later that the English word made it into the Russian language completely – \u00ab\u0431\u043b\u043e\u0433\u00bb<\/strong> [blog]. Since saying the whole sentence above every time you\u2019ve blogged or when you\u2019re about to blog takes a lot of time and effort, I started to shorten it down to \u00ab\u0431\u043b\u043e\u0433\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [\u201cto blog\u201d] and for a long time, almost six months now, have I been thinking that this creation was something all of my own. Little did I know that many other Russians, just like myself, blog too much and too frequently to say more than one word, and that discussions about this new verb have been going on for sometime now. As of yet it is unsure when this new word is going to become an official part of the \u00ab\u0432\u0435\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0438 \u043c\u043e\u0433\u0443<\/span>\u0447\u0438\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> Russian language, as it is a rather conservative tongue. But one can always hope that the following will become a common thing to be heard both in villages on the Don and in the suburbs of Saint Petersburg: \u00ab\u044f \u0431\u043b\u043e\u0433\u0443<\/span>\u044e, \u0442\u044b \u0431\u043b\u043e\u0433\u0443<\/span>\u0435\u0448\u044c, \u043e\u043d \u0431\u043b\u043e\u0433\u0443<\/span>\u0435\u0442, \u043c\u044b \u0431\u043b\u043e\u0433\u0443<\/span>\u0435\u043c, \u0432\u044b \u0431\u043b\u043e\u0433\u0443<\/span>\u0435\u0442\u0435, \u043e\u043d\u0438 \u0431\u043b\u043e\u0433\u0443<\/span>\u044e\u0442\u00bb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n


\nSince Russian is a language that loves to put different prefixes on verbs, here\u2019s a little list of suggestions of ways to make a perfect verb out of the imperfective \u00ab\u0431\u043b\u043e\u0433\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u041f\u043e\u0431\u043b\u043e\u0433\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> since the prefix \u00ab\u043f\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> is a very common way of making the perfect of form of a verb, as, for example, in \u00ab\u043f\u043e\u0433\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to talk (once), to talk (a little), to talk (not for very long)]. Using the perfect you can make a sentence with all verbs in the future tense, like this:<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u042f \u043f\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043e \u043d\u0435\u043c\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043a\u043e \u043f\u043e\u0431\u043b\u043e\u0433\u0443<\/span>\u044e, \u043f\u043e\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u043c \u0442\u0435\u0431\u0435<\/span> \u043f\u043e\u0437\u0432\u043e\u043d\u044e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [I\u2019ll just blog a little, and then I\u2019ll call you]<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u0417\u0430\u0431\u043b\u043e\u0433\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> with the prefix \u00ab\u0437\u0430\u00bb<\/strong>, which usually stands for the beginning of an action, as in \u00ab\u0437\u0430\u0434\u0443<\/span>\u043c\u0430\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\u00bb <\/strong>[to begin thinking about something, to start pondering on something].<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u042d<\/span>\u0442\u043e \u044f \u0437\u0430\u0431\u043b\u043e\u0433\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0430 \u043e \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0431\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043c\u0430\u0445 \u0441\u0438\u0441\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u043c\u044b \u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430\u0437\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0438!\u00bb<\/strong> [It was I who began blogging about the problems of the eductional system of Russia!]<\/p>\n

And then there\u2019s a perfect version that\u2019ll probably only become popular and often used in the future: \u00ab\u0440\u0430\u0437\u0431\u043b\u043e\u0433\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong>. It has the prefix of \u00ab\u0440\u0430\u0437\u00bb<\/strong>, which is a rather ambigious prefix with different meanings, but in this case it means \u2018to stop doing something\u2019 as in the verb \u00ab\u0440\u0430\u0437\u043b\u044e\u0431\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb <\/strong>[to stop loving].<\/p>\n
