It lends itself happily to a collection of jokes and funny images that, like the photo above, seem to confirm that Russia is indeed a land of unfathomable mystery where even the screw-ups cannot be fully comprehended by foreigners.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Many people in Russia nowadays lament on the state of Russian language. They point to its general decline, especially amongst <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043c\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u0436\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [young people], to <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0435\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0441\u0442\u0432 <\/strong><strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0438\u043d\u0444\u043e\u0440\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [degradation of the mass media] and abundance of foreign influences.<\/p>\n<p>It is true to a point since in the last 10 years or so Russian language became inundated with all manner of foreign words even when there\u2019s a well-known and commonly-used Russian alternative. But the changes seem to go deeper than that. If you follow Russian media and all things Russian, you might find it curious that Russians eagerly borrow so much from the West while simultaneously denouncing <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0433\u043d\u0438\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0417<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043f\u0430\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [rotten West] and rejecting its influence.<\/p>\n<p>The issue itself is not new as it dates back <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0435 XIX <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0435\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [to the middle of the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century] (notice Russian practice of using Roman numerals to denote centuries)<\/p>\n<p>The original conflict was between <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043b\u0430\u0432\u044f\u043d\u043e\u0444<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> and <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043f\u0430\u0434\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0421\u043b\u0430\u0432\u044f\u043d\u043e\u0444<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [Slavophiles] believed that Russia was unique in its position in the world, its <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u043d\u0430\u0437\u043d\u0430\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb <\/strong>[mission] and its <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0443\u0434\u044c\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [destiny]. The historical path along which the country was to develop was also unique and could not be molded according to European examples. <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0424. <\/strong><strong>\u0418. <\/strong><strong>\u0422<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044e<\/span>\u0442\u0447\u0435\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> [F. I. Tyutchev], one of the most famous of <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043b\u0430\u0432\u044f\u043d\u043e\u0444<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044b\u00bb,<\/strong> penned these undying lines that sum up this view:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u0423\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043c \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u044e \u043d\u0435 \u043f\u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0410\u0440\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u043c <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0449\u0438\u043c \u043d\u0435 \u0438\u0437\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0442\u044c:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0423 \u043d\u0435\u0439 \u043e\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0435\u043d\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0441\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c &#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0412 \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u044e \u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e \u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043a\u043e \u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>[<\/strong>Russia cannot be understood with the mind alone,<br \/>\nNo ordinary yardstick can span her greatness:<br \/>\nShe stands alone, unique \u2013<br \/>\nIn Russia, one can only believe.]<\/p>\n<p>Notice the use of the word <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to believe] here. It is not here just <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u043b\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0444\u043c\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [for the sake rhyme]. Frequently overlooked, it is quite central to the Slavophiles theocentric views. Belief here echoes Orthodox Christian faith viewed by Slavophiles as a foundation, the uniting element and the cornerstone of their philosophical thought.<\/p>\n<p>The opposing ideology was <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043f\u0430\u0434\u043d\u0438\u0447\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> and its adherents were <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043f\u0430\u0434\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> from the word <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0417<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043f\u0430\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [the West]. They believed that humanity followed essentially the same developmental path. So many of the things viewed as \u201cuniquely Russian\u201d by Slavophiles were considered developmental delays by <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043f\u0430\u0434\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [westernizers]. <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0418. <\/strong><strong>\u0410. <\/strong><strong>\u0413\u043e\u043d\u0447\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> [I. A. Goncharov], one of the prominent Westernizers, wrote his famous <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041e\u0431\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u043e\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> [Oblomov] largely as a critique of <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043b\u0430\u0432\u044f\u043d\u043e\u0444<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e\u00bb.<\/strong> The word <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0431\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u043e\u0432\u0449\u0438\u043d\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> coined by him came to describe a state of societal and personal stagnation and apathy.<\/p>\n<p>Much like most of the Western thought of the time, the ideology of Westernizers was anthropocentric with a belief that <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0447\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043a <\/strong><strong>\u0435\u0441\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0441\u0435\u0445 <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0435\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [man is a measure of all things].<\/p>\n<p>A century and a half later, these two <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0438\u0430\u043c\u0435\u0442\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0442\u0438\u0432\u043e\u043f\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u044b\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [opposing] ideologies continue to shape Russians\u2019 thoughts on all manners of topics, including politics, economics and, of course, linguistics.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019d think that Slavophiles enjoyed broad government support, at least until the Revolution of 1917. Interestingly the government historically seemed to be on the side of the Westernizes. Slavophiles, on the other hand, were traditionally the dissenters, the opposition. This was true before and especially after 1917.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, in the last 150 years both views went through many revisions. Westernizers went out of favor with both the State and the general populace. More importantly, there are now extreme Slavophiles and extreme Westernizers that seem to have forgotten the central premises of both ways.<\/p>\n<p>On the Slavophiles\u2019 side the extreme is known as <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u0432\u0430\u0441\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0430\u0442\u0440\u0438\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0437\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> &#8211; a misguided, not rooted in facts, and in general overblown sense of one\u2019s Russian-ness. It is frequently combined with an extreme <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435\u043f\u0440\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u0437\u043d\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [antipathy] of all things Western.<\/p>\n<p>Extreme Westernizers, on the other hand, believe that pretty much everything in the West is worth adopting and copying and that Russia\u2019s inability or unwillingness to adopt Western values is a proof of a broken system and a broken people.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, representatives from these extremes tend to be the most active, the loudest and full of attention-getting claims and headlines. Read some of the discussions and comments on Russian Internet and you might get a very distorted picture.
