\u0415\u0441\u043b\u0438\u2026 \u0430\u2026 \u043d\u043e\u2026<\/strong> Three perhaps most commonly used \u0441\u043e\u044e\u0301\u0437\u043e\u0432<\/strong> \u0432 \u0440\u0443\u0301\u0441\u0441\u043a\u043e\u043c \u044f\u0437\u044b\u043a\u0435\u0301<\/strong>\u00a0(conjunctions in Russian), aside from \u201c\u0438\u201d, and exactly how much I got to say as a kid when trying to convince my parents to get me \u0434\u043e\u043c\u0430\u0301\u0448\u043d\u0435\u0433\u043e \u043f\u0438\u0442\u043e\u0301\u043c\u0446\u0430<\/strong>\u00a0(a pet). It usually went like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\t\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n

Since then, some things stayed the same \u2013 my parents are still averse to having pets, \u043a \u0431\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0448\u043e\u0301\u043c\u0443<\/strong> \u0441\u043e\u0436\u0430\u043b\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0438\u044e \u043c\u043e\u0438\u0445 \u0431\u0440\u0430\u0442\u0438\u0301\u0448\u0435\u043a \u0438 \u0441\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0451<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (much to my siblings\u2019 disappointment). I, however, have learned to navigate this world without overly relying on \u0441\u043e\u044e\u0301\u0437\u044b<\/strong> (conjunctions). Would you like to know how? The answer is: \u0431\u0435\u0441\u0441\u043e\u044e\u0301\u0437\u043d\u044b\u0435\u00a0\u0441\u043b\u043e\u0301\u0436\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u043b\u043e\u0436\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/strong> (sentences without conjunctions).<\/p>\n

To use or not to use<\/h4>\n

While conjunctions do serve many useful purposes, like connecting, contrasting, and elaborating on objects and actions between the clauses of a sentence, there are even smaller grammatical units that can effectively convey the same meaning: \u0437\u043d\u0430\u0301\u043a\u0438 \u043f\u0440\u0435\u043f\u0438\u043d\u0430\u0301\u043d\u0438\u044f <\/strong>(punctuation signs). I guess, you could say this post is partially about the ways we use \u0437\u0430\u043f\u044f\u0442\u044b\u0301\u0435 <\/strong>(commas), \u0434\u0432\u043e\u0435\u0442\u043e\u0301\u0447\u0438\u044f<\/strong> (colons), and \u0442\u0438\u0440\u0435\u0301<\/strong>\u00a0(dashes) in Russian. Punctuation signs carry only the quarter of linguistic weight in sentences without conjunctions. The real hero, I would argue, is your intonation (\u0438\u043d\u0442\u043e\u043d\u0430\u0301\u0446\u0438\u044f<\/strong>). Read the following sentences and pay attention to how your intonation changes:<\/p>\n

\u041e\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0435\u043b\u0438\u0301\u0448\u044c\u0441\u044f \u2014 \u043f\u043e\u0437\u0432\u043e\u043d\u0438\u0301. (<\/em>Call me when you make up your mind.<\/em>)<\/em><\/p>\n

\u042f \u043f\u0440\u0438\u043d\u044f\u043b\u0430\u0301 \u0440\u0435\u0448\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0438\u0435: \u0437\u0430\u0431\u044b\u0442\u044c \u043e\u0431 \u044d\u0442\u043e\u043c \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0301\u043d\u043d\u043e\u043c \u0434\u043d\u0435 \u043d\u0430\u0432\u0441\u0435\u0433\u0434\u0430\u0301. (<\/em>I decided to forget about that weird day forever.<\/em>) \u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

See how you pause for the dash, the colon and the commas? Now, that’s a great start.<\/p>\n
