On April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut <span lang=\"ru-RU\">(Do you want to know why Russians call their astronauts cosmonauts? Read <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/why-cosmonauts-instead-of-astronauts\/\">THIS B<\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/why-cosmonauts-instead-of-astronauts\/\"><span lang=\"en-US\">LOG<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-US\">) <\/span>Yuri Gagarin made the world&#8217;s first orbital flyby of the Earth (<em>\u0417\u0435\u043c\u043b<span lang=\"en-US\"><i><span lang=\"ru-RU\">\u044f\u0301<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/em>). Exactly twenty years later, the first American &#8220;Space Shuttle&#8221; was launched. Since then, we have the &#8220;World&#8217;s Space party&#8221; &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yuri's_Night\">Yuri&#8217;s Night<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/be-like-cosmonauts\/\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Celebrate it with us!<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0e101a\">Ironically, just today, I had an inspiring conversation with a brilliant person. Leonid is studying the topic of astronautics and even plans to write a book. He told me incredible facts about the life and traditions of Russian cosmonauts (<em>\u043a\u043e\u0441\u043c\u043e\u043d<span lang=\"en-US\"><i>\u0430\u0301<\/i><\/span>\u0432\u0442\u044b<\/em>). In the US, he is considered the &#8220;father&#8221; of the American space program. The first Soviet P1 missiles (<em>\u0440\u0430\u043a<span lang=\"ru-RU\"><i><span lang=\"en-US\">\u0435\u0301<\/span><\/i><\/span>\u0442\u044b<\/em>) were built according to his designs for the V-2 rocket.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0e101a\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sergei_Korolev\">Sergei Korolev<\/a>, a Soviet scientist, designer of rocket and space systems, and the founder of practical cosmonautics. Despite his achievements, he was arrested by the NKVD for belonging to a sabotage organization.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0e101a\">Two days before the historic flight (<em>\u043f\u043e\u043b\u0451\u0442<\/em>), there were only two applicants &#8211; Yuri Gagarin and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gherman_Titov\">German Titov<\/a>. The final choice fell on the first one. And the reason for this was Yuri&#8217;s photogenic smile (<em>\u0443\u043b<span lang=\"ru-RU\"><i><span lang=\"en-US\">\u044b\u0301<\/span><\/i><\/span>\u0431\u043a\u0430<\/em>). After all, he was filmed by photographers around the world.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Yuri Gagarin landed in the Saratov region. At the landing site, a pillar was installed with a sign on which it was written: \u201cDo not touch! 04\/12\/61 10 h 55 m Moscow time.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0e101a\">Gagarin always had a passion for cars. The French government presented him with a Matra Djet sports car, which later won in Formula 1. This model was the only one in the Soviet Union.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0e101a\">Soviet and Russian cosmonauts have a tradition to watch the film &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/White_Sun_of_the_Desert\">White Sun of the Desert<\/a>&#8221; (&#8220;\u0411<span lang=\"ru-RU\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u0435\u0301<\/span><\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0435 \u0441<span lang=\"en-US\"><span lang=\"ru-RU\">\u043e\u0301<\/span><\/span>\u043b\u043d\u0446\u0435 \u043f\u0443\u0441\u0442<span lang=\"ru-RU\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u044b\u0301<\/span><\/span>\u043d\u0438&#8221;) before launching from Baikonur (&#8220;<em>\u0411\u0430\u0439\u043a\u043e\u043d<span lang=\"en-US\">\u0443\u0301<\/span>\u0440&#8221;<\/em>). Using the film as an example, the astronauts were trained on how to properly work with the camera. By the way, astronauts from other countries also have to observe this tradition.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0e101a\">The first rocket engine (<em>\u0434\u0432<span lang=\"en-US\">\u0438\u0301<\/span>\u0433\u0430\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c<\/em>) was invented by the revolutionary <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nikolai_Kibalchich\">Kibalchich<\/a>, sitting in prison. He took part in the assassination attempt on Tsar Alexander II. But his apparatus (<em>\u0430\u043f\u043f\u0430\u0440<span lang=\"en-US\"><i>\u0430\u0301<\/i><\/span>\u0442<\/em>) was never built.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0e101a\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yuri_Malenchenko\">Yuri Malenchenko<\/a> is the first person to marry in space on August 10, 2003. His fiancee Ekaterina Dmitrieva was in Texas while he was on the International Space Station 240 miles over New Zealand.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0e101a\">Russian cosmonaut <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gennady_Padalka\">Gennady Padalka<\/a> set a world record (<em>\u0440\u0435\u043a<span lang=\"en-US\"><i><span lang=\"ru-RU\">\u043e\u0301<\/span><\/i><\/span>\u0440\u0434<\/em>) for the time spent in space &#8211; as much as 878 days in total. Before him, the first place belonged to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Valeri_Polyakov\">Valery Polyakov<\/a> &#8211; 438 days.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0e101a\">On April 9, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soyuz-2\">Soyuz-2.1a<\/a> launch (<em>\u0437\u0430\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a<span lang=\"en-US\"><i>\u0430\u0301<\/i><\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/em>) vehicle with the Soyuz MS-18 manned transport vehicle had its last launch from the Baikonur cosmodrome (<em>\u043a\u043e\u0441\u043c\u043e\u0434\u0440<span lang=\"en-US\"><i><span lang=\"ru-RU\">\u043e\u0301<\/span><\/i><\/span>\u043c<\/em>). The crew will have to make two spacewalks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0e101a\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Progress_MS-14\">Progress MS-14<\/a> was launched on April 30 of the last year.
